And of course after the '50s there was the rock star diet where all solid foodstuffs were simply substituted with cocaine, perhaps amphetamines or possibly heroin or sone combination of these. Very effective and popular among the young.
You left out a big part of the Fen-Phen study. Michael Weintraub in the early 1990s was an Office Director at the FDA and went around to different meetings “promoting” it. Even when the FDA told him to cool it, he was unapologetic. He was eventually asked to resign. I know I was there during this.
A kid I knew growing up got a > $7,000,000 from the Fen-Phen settlement back in the early 2000's. Yepp...He was livin high on the hog for about 1 year and was COMPLETELY broke. He blew it all on trucks, 4-wheelers, dirt bikes, OxyContin and cocaine. Lots and LOTS of Oxys & coke. Doctors told him he probably only had 5-10 years to live. (hence the settlement) He was 19-20yo then and is still alive today.
I got a DOGO ARGENTINO in 2021, I’m back down to a size 4/6. People ask me where I work out when I’m walking my dog and I say, you’re looking at it. She’s my gym.
Extended release stimulants can still be abused pretty easily. If someone feels good on adderall, then vyvanse and Addy XR will as well. Won't get peak effects instantly tho
I lost 25KG in 2022 without any need for medication. I dieted quite strictly, and I exercised a reasonable amount. I started at 130kg and reached 105kg within the year. This year, 2023 I found it somewhat difficult to maintain my weight of 105kg, but through monitoring my weight it was possible, although I did momentarily approach 110kg again, now I sit more at about 100kg. All this is to say a miracle drug would merely treat the symptom, not the cause of your weight. You still have to FOREVER change your diet and exercising habits, not just for a bit.
@@PainterVierax well for me personally I don't think I need a nutritionist, but rather a psychologist. My problem stemmed from depression, thus I overate and abused alcohol. I also felt like I would have to put in the work on my own, and after somehow managing to motivate myself to change things, at the cost of temporarily greatly increased levels of stress, I now feel that I can get no further in my recovery without getting professional help. That being said I got very far on my own, dropped alcohol almost completely, and am on the search for said professional help. Sorry if this seems like "trauma dumping", I'm just trying to to document my journey, and maybe motivate someone else. I made it very far on my own mentally and physically, but there's no shame in getting help, and getting it earlier is probably always better.
@@hummel6364 No worries. In fact that's interesting as psychology is a factor I completely forgot. And ironically i suffer long term depression myself. Good job quitting alcohol without help though. That's a huge victory by itself.
@@PainterVierax the only help I had with the alcohol was a friend who quit at the same time as me. He didn't drink in over 260 days, me on the other hand I still drink on occasion, but not in a substance abuse like manner, just on birthdays and the like. Psychology is honestly the biggest part whether it's caused by depression or not, your mindset needs to change.

Trusting these Congressional pieces of trash over ourselves is probably the worst mistake any of us can make in our lives. Please do a video on Hi-Fi a/v systems and such that came to a high point in the early 2000s then crashed due to smartphones. I'll be sure to ask you about this again. Oh but this weight loss video was fascinating to see how long ago these drugs were being ministered but also taken off the market like modern versions.
It's important to remember that a lot of "medical" weight loss techniques hinder anabolism or force catabolism. While this is good for losing fatty tissue, it also causes you to lose lean tissue that you very much want to keep, especially if you're older. Ozempic, for example, causes people to lose as much if not more lean tissue as it does fatty tissue. Considering high amounts of lean body mass works as a reserve of resources for the body to pull from as you get older or when you're sick, causing people to lose lean tissue like this will likely lead them to as early a grave as obesity. Ideally you'd want to build as much lean tissue as possible (which is metabolically active) and your body will choose to support that tissue in a slight calorie deficit by depleting your fat stores. But progress this way is slow and requires at least some discipline if not good old fashioned hard work, so people don't do it.
Really depends on what else they do while on Oz, if they just keep upping the dose and eating whatever used to and not exercising, yeah it won't get to better metabolic health. If used at the least effective dose, eating as instructed along with exercise, it could be an excellent aid.
You loose muscle tissue because you sit on your ass and do not eat protein. The end. It's mostly women who stop eating anything on Ozempic and sit on their ass all day.
The people taking Ozempic will often continue over eating, no doubt. Most probably won't bother excersizing enough, if at all. Save for people who physiologically cannot process food correctly, it's more or less a willpower issue in the first place to even become obese. Think about how much WORK it takes to even make yourself that huge. It takes even more to undo it.
25:20 this anti-THC drug was visibly made out of good faith and to minimise adverse health effects... But then the human body also makes a little THC and if it all get blocked, well depression happens as it was found out.
Yeah rimonabant is really interesting since it's an inverse agonist of the cb1 receptor rather than just an antagonist. Not only does it block endogenous cannabinoid ligands, it causes the inverse signal to fire which causes directly opposing pharmacologic activity compared to a typical agonist such as THC. Causing decreased appetite, stomach discomfort, depressed mood, and inflammatory effects such as flu like symptoms.
Hey man, there are some added complexities to the effects of DNP that are important to discuss which you missed. The body actually stores fats into two broader categories, known as brown and white fat. The type of fat you typically think of, which is primarily used as tapable energy storage, is white fat. The function of brown fat which is relevant to this discussion is as a major mechanism of thermoregulation. DNP specifically induces metabolism of the body's brown fat, which even in healthy individuals largely produces heat rather than usable energy. This not only doesnt aleviate many of the worst impacts of obesity (e.g. insulin insensitivity), but over time can leave the body's ability to regulate its temperature dangerously incapacitated
DNP is known to be deadly. I took it for a few months and did lose weight. Besides it's obvious drawback of heat, I just wondered how unhealthy it would be long term... Cataracts was only seen in females.
Aaaah yes, the good old days of Obetrol and Desoxyn....Preludin was still available in the early 70s. Then there was dinitrophenol....if you survived it you sure did lose weight! You described it's discovery quite well - it was an intermediate in the production of picric acid, which is a little easier to make than TNT, so it was used despite it's tendency to react with metals forming picrate salts, some of which are quite sensitive, leading to accidental detonation, not a desirable situation. It was phased out after WW I. Nice video, thank you kindly. Cheers...
Yes. About the only thing he struggled with was the pronunciation of DNP! Hint: try di-nitro-phenol. :) Apart from DNP there is another famous poison that short-circuits the body's energy production process, in a different way: Arsenic. Arsenic, being the next element down from Phosphorous, ends up in the ATP energy cycle in place of phosphate. But these analogues spontaneously hydrolyse quite easily, wasting the body's energy as heat. I recall being told that the administration of Arsenic (when they did such things!) was accompanied by a pleasant feeling of warmth due to this process. Paradoxically, Arsenic has apparently been used in poultry and swine production to improve weight gain until fairly recently. How this works, I can't explain at the moment.
...For anyone interested in picric acid, I feel like I should clarify that it isn't just "quite sensitive", it's *extremely* sensitive. A feather landing on it can set it off.
@@SyndicateOperativeNo. I'm afraid I have to disagree. I made picric acid as a teenager (we all did things in our youth). As per the literature, I could not get it to explode at all. It is metal salts, especially heavy-metal salts which are very sensitive. I then tried making some lead picrate, which is supposed to be very sensitive. I could not get that to explode either, at first. This is probably because it was hydrated. Disappointed, I tried drying it further, wrapped in tissue paper and placed on the external heat vent from the family AGA stove. Much of it ran through the paper onto the stainless steel surface which was probably ~100 degrees Celsius or more. I abandoned it for a few days, and then finally put a blow torch on the residue. It detonated, breaking the top of the vent and taking some of the mortar out of the brick wall. Fortunately, my parents were away for the weekend. After recovering from the shock, my brother and I did some ingenious work with some metal sheeting and plasterwork to repair the damage. My parents never noticed. Don't try this at home, kids.
I've had an eating disorder for almost all my life 12 to 44, mainly bulimia and laxatives so I knew how to eat and I also was always on the heavier side.(my mum and older sister are both overweight) but when I hit menopause, I thought I was going insane that I completely switched to IF and zero sugar as well as no carbs and processed foods and also no alcohol. when the adhd kids medicated with Amphetamines for years while growing and developing their minds become adults we will see the long term side effects of this treatment.
amphetamines are extremely effective if you realise that after them you HAVE to still eat less or get an activity to burn calories, good kickstart still there are a lot of other side effects so
Love this perspective. I personally know people on glp-1 agonists who have developed gastroparesis, it's looking a lot like this round may be more of the same
Yeah, no poor people eating shitty food from food deserts. Middle class folk really want to wear their college-aged clothes. Hey, better this than money wasted on stuff that doesn't work.
@moodfm5673 Because the R&D and regulatory costs to get said drugs to market are billions of dollars, not to mention that successful drugs need to not only recoup the cost of their own development but also the development of other drugs that fail to make it to market. On top of that due to drug cost caps imposed by other countries, the US market has to pick up the slack, effectively subsidizing the cost of drugs for the rest of the world at the expense of US citizens. If a drug can't turn a profit there is no motive to produce it, as the company will fail eventually and a failed company can't produce or invent new life saving drugs.
i was in bodybuilding before and used dinitrophenol a bunch of times, felt not great while using it but afterwards definitely felt more energetic and resilient
@YourCapybaraAmigo_17yrsago It's DNP for short and used in explosive manufacturing, like TNT. Makes your body burn extreme amounts of fat, to the point where you can die from overheating. Its dangerous but no other drug works as fast and well for losing weight FAST.
"easiest way to change obesity is lifestyle change" not exactly, that is the most efficient, but i would say also the hardest way. changing lifestyle is nearly impossible, even when it is known to be good by the one should do the change.
For me who was 90kg (198lb) now 67kg (148lb) over 5 years, the hardest was the first year as your body really wants you to go back to the old stability. Once that hurdle was over it was a breeze, as your body's adaptation is mostly complete. Had to do it slowly over the years though.
@@rulu1828 yeah the hardest part is the starting months when your stomach didn't regain a normal size and the hunger makes you break up the diet. Hey! You mentioned Chile. If only in a drug you don't recommend. (The green star means that it's very controlled medication. Dr. Robert Lustig's work is a must if someone wants to learn more about human metabolism. The dark ages of confusion when it somea to what to eat or not to eat might just be over.
I see that many of mentioned compounds had side effects after many many months of use. Why not make a regimen od 4-6 weeks per medication and cycle through few different medication instead of taking only 1 thing for many months?
10:04 "Today we use diethylene glycol to make solvents, plasticizers, and antifreeze. They gave children antifreeze". They shouldn't have given children diethylene glycol because it metabolizes into a strong poison, not because some people also use it to lower the freezing point of water. Propylene glycol is also used as antifreeze and it happens to also be safe to eat due to metabolizing into harmless lactic acid. Idk, this part just gave me "chemical used in yoga mats" vibes.
I'd argue that the statement does a fine-enough job in causing an immediate and easily identifiable feeling of concern in a layman, as opposed to stating its mechanisms. I was often warned as a child about the dangers and toxicity of antifreeze, to myself and to pets that might lap it up; it was on the same level of repeated domestic lore as warning of the dangers of mixing together bleach and ammonia. I understand your point, though I also feel that succinctly saying "they gave children antifreeze" is an apt enough statement to get the information across.
also, water is a wonderful solvent. all on its own, too. about a third of water is oxygen. why would i drink water when my body need anti oxidants? this is all one big scare tactic if you dumb
I remember benzedrine being used as a fuel additive in drag racing in the 1960's. Those engines turned into literal grenades. It was banned by the NHRA shortly thereafter.
What was the mechanism? It’s not an oxidiser. You’re mixing it up with a similar sounding chemical I think mate, amphetamine would have no impact on combustion when added to fuel
@@causewaykayak Yup, you can use straight hydrazine or hydrazine hydrate as a liquid propellant in either a bipropellant or monopropellant (with a catalyst) system. Straight hydrazine is bonkers toxic and reactive with just about everything. Highly recommend the book "Ignition! An informal history of Liquid Rocket Propellants" by John Drury Clark. Its a frankly scary insight in to the "throw things at the wall and see what gives high impulse" era of rocketry.
Drug trials for new medications are tested on people numbering in the thousands. After FDA approval and marketing if the new drug is popular millions of people are prescribed it. Problems not seen or rarely seen in drugs trials start being reported when millions are using it.
I’m taking the best weight loss combination now… decaf coffee with collagen and vitamins, diet sodas, sriracha hot chili sauce by the teaspoon all day. I can go 22 hours a day without anything else. Then a single meal with a protein, veggies and fruit for less than 1000 calories a day.
Please consult a nutritionist. A single meal per day is a bit extreme, you should make at least two and eventually snack those fruits and vegetables instead of sriracha spoons, especially if you exercise correctly. What you can do is progressively remove the soda to get your brain use to a less sugary diet and the gaseous drinks restrain the stomach to shrink. Get flavored water if you can't stand the plain one.
Less than 1000 calories a day is not healthy or safe for most people. Please consult a medical professional, as this sounds like an eating disorder to me. I wish you well.
Ah, yes, Orlistat aka Xenical… not covered by my provincial health care plan, so $129 a month… it’s a fat blocker, eg it prevents you from absorbing and metabolizing 1/3 of the fat you consume… didn’t work that well for me… “significant an*l leakage” was mentioned as one of its effects… and it did… a weaker version may be still available as “Ally” ( don’t know if still on the market or not ?) what ultimately did work for me was gastric bypass surgery in 2004 ( roux-en-Y) , sadly you can fail after having the surgery, too-eg you are approved for the surgery, you have the surgery, you lose the weight for a while then you gain most of it back.. lucky for me that hasn’t really happened - still it’s major surgery, and only approved for people with high enough BMI’s ( body-mass index) … followed up with a panniculectomy in 2005-2006 ( more surgery) so more complications , as both are major surgeries, but they both seem to work well enough- there’s also the sleeve gastrectomy…

It is fundamentally hard to half quit something- you still need to eat, but less and healthier portions. This in a way harder than completely cutting out some other vise like smoking where you don’t need tobacco to live.
@@jeremyloveslinuxif someone has large fat stores then they really actually don't need to eat, it's just excruciating. Other than shoring up any specific vitamin and nutrient requirements to ensure nothing else goes wrong for them the energy stored is objectively plenty in terms of calories.
