In this, episode 158, DV looks into the Eric Weingartner cam shootout from his (DV's) prospective which is almost undoubtedly very much different from that of any of the other 20 or so entrants. He is also, for all practical purposes, launching the ultra powerful TorqueMaster cam selection program. Just how powerful is it? Well let's put it this way. If you thought you knew most all there is to know about speccing cams then the release of this program will have you totally rethinking that idea.
Here are some links that are shown in the video that you will find helpful to both you and this project.

That's a very impressive program. I wanted to learn how to make a program once so I chose to make a simple parts ordering program with just three inputs to determine how many of each part to stock. Well, even though it was less than 100 lines of code, just getting everything to work correctly took me over a month; the amount of time and energy it must have taken to make all of these inputs and variables work together to actually produce the right results must have been staggering!

It's going to be good to clarify how well cams can be spec'ed for average power under the curve and max power. Not only will the results be interesting but the ensuing debate will be very educational. Anything that I can learn that can be carried over to my engine of choice will be wonderful. I know I can buy an off the shelf cam that will improve on my current OEM cam across the board of on the high end but it's not entirely clear to me that the cams on the shelf are actually anything more than a copy of other people's cams with no particular engineering behind them. I expect you will win average power under the curve (or close) but not so much the peak power given what you have said an the initial software guesstimates. BMW M50 variants are my flavour of choice so the recipes don't help much but the understanding does.

DV. Regarding your Torque Master program. This is especially poignant now that you appear to be developing a version for the LS platform. I've only one engine that was in development and my scope was very small. A 10.3:1 iron headed 355 CID SBC. Right up the TM alley. After sorting through a few details and getting deeper into the heads that would be in play, an RPM limit emerged so I used TM to generate a spec. Not having the nerve to order a cam based on some software (call me chicken) I went to a cam designer and inhouse manufacturer for further development. This designer, who by the way has come highly recommended by you (and others) produced a specification based on the entirety of the project. Drag racing primarily. It's very interesting to note that the Torque Master spec and that created for me are one and the same. Something I thought I'd share. Early testing has shown this to be a good move on my part and I hope for a few personal bests once the spring arrives and I can get to the track. Best of luck in contest David and its good to se this collaboration between you and Eric.

Does your camshaft program consider the size of the bore of the lifter that will be used? If you change the SBC lifter from the stock size to a .904" size, will that effect the grind that is needed to optimize the camshaft selection? All of the old Mopar engine building books talk of the Mopar camshafts being ground with a faster opening rate over the GM and Ford grinds due to the .904" lifter.

I Think The Biggest Reason Comp Declined This Software Is Because They Are Mass Production Focused. There Is Probably A Much Greater Profit Margin In Making A Few Bulk Cams And Selling Those Rather Than Making Custom Camshafts Per Application. i had one of his engine books about 40 years ago. i read that book more than anything i ever read in school. very informative. i gave up doing this work as i grew frustrated with the level of profound resistance to not stick a -9 ngk spark plug in the 8.5-9.5 n/a street motors ive tested on the dyno. seems people need to know how to read spark plugs and have enough initial timing lead and limit the total. and have enough valve spring. and not too much oil in the pan.

Were the Comp Cams mechanical flat tappet lobes for a SBC designed for use with the stock .0843" lifter bore diameter? If you change the lifter bore to the larger .0874" Ford size or the even larger .0904" Chrysler size, wouldn't that change the optimal lobe design? All of the old Mopar engine books states how all of the Mopar cams that were designed by the aftermarket camshaft companies used Chevy engines to design their camshafts and used that data to grind the Mopar camshafts. Mopar Performance took advantage of their larger diameter lifter bore and designed their Purple camshafts taking this difference into account and it gave their cams a faster rate of lift giving their camshafts an advantage over the other inferior designs. So if Comp Cams designed their SBC camshaft lobes using the stock lifter size, their lobes aren't optimized for an engine with a large lifer bore.
@CJ5EVOLUTION
@CJ5EVOLUTION 14 часов назад
Maybe I'm wrong but, your LS program possibly will be very close on determining SBF as they are similar, taking in account that the Cyl head flow the same and valves sizes are the same.,.or.not even close?
@robertellison4691
@robertellison4691 15 часов назад
Does your optimal camshaft program take into account the various lifter bore sizes and their effect on the optimal design for the camshaft grind? Do any camshaft designers or lobe designers take the various sizes of lifter bore diameters into consideration when they are designing the lobes and camshaft specs?
@robertellison4691
@robertellison4691 17 часов назад
Have you ever had a mechinal flat tappet cam ground with very little taper and used a solid lifter with very little radius like the old Mopar Performance Parts purple camshafts? Also, have you ever used an undersized solid lifter like Mopar Performance Parts used to manufacture? According to the Larry Shepard engine building books, using a low radius solid lifter and an almost completely flat tappet and an .0005" undersize solid lifter reduces friction and makes more HP.

Imagine having the hubris and arrogance of DV and then advising everyone else to put aside their opinions, biases, and preconceptions. WOW!! Here's some actual facts: if you design the rules of a competion to mathematically prevent the winning camshaft from being the BEST camshaft, the results are meaningless. It's a mathematical impossibility. This is simpleton level math and physics. Furthermore, thinking that torque is a measurement of power also makes it literally impossible for the best camshaft to win the competition. When peak torque is effectively 75% of the scoring criteria, the competition is obviously flawed. Takes about half a brain cell and elementary school mathematics to figure that out.
