Not every game controller is created equal. Some are creepy and weird, while others are specialized to a particular game or genre. Others... are just bizarre like DMP's brilliant mind. In this video we show the unusual game controllers in the Metal Jesus game collection!

Rumor has it the Atari 2600 wireless controllers were recalled and stopped being sold because they were causing garage doors to open due to frequency overlap. I would be curious to hear if that is true!
@albb0920
@albb0920 9 лет назад
I think Atari 2700 didn't went out due to same reason, maybe they're the same thing (?)
@JDavies345
@JDavies345 9 лет назад
no there was a actual total wireless version of the Atari 2600 called the Atari VCS, it had a built in wireless reciever and all the working buttons including power were on the controller (though all were on the console itself and can take third party or first party controllers), but there was huge interferences that would spawn and the FCC at the time was regulating that band of radio emissions, and that Atari never saw the PRODUCTION light of day, theres only in the teens of the systems and one i think still on Atariage.com, but Atariage has more information about the Atari VCS, you can also look up Gamester81's vid of it which has TONS of info

JDavies345 That is awesome, so the urban legend was a lie?
@JDavies345
@JDavies345 9 лет назад
Barnacules Nerdgasm nope, it did actually happen, the wireless frequencies were hard to get in those days Atari wanted to buy a bunch of frequencies but it turned out to be already used, it was getting way too expensive and they dumped the project
@theTF2sniper
@theTF2sniper 9 лет назад
i actually own a pair of these and i can confirm that they do interfere with other frequencies(wich ones i do not know) ,the left joystick also works allot better then the right joystick ,Im sure these worked great in the day but with all these signals going through the air today its normal that they are outdated

It was designed specifically for Phantasy Star Online's Gamecube port, but I'm pretty sure it works for other games. Because typing on the in-game "keyboard" took foreeeeeeever. I honestly wish I had the keyboard controller, because I still play PSO. Not online anymore, but still an awesome game.

There are more than one. About three. Hori, Ascii and another company that fails to come to mind right now made keyboard controllers. The keyboard works with every game, thought the keys themselves don't function unless you play Phantasy Star Online or Giftpia. I've played Gekitou Ninja Taisen with the thing before.

Hey Metal Jesus, I love all your videos ,that goes without saying but my retro game console collection is far from being as complex as yours. The reason I comment is that I have a Capcom Chainsaw controller, there are 15.000 pieces made to go with Resident Evil 4 and to be in the same theme. Thing is that I got it for my birthday and as far as I know is the only one still active in my country, Romania. The blood splatter paint on it is unique on every model and it has a unique way of starting a game, you just pull on the starting cord making an chaisaw sound every time. The integration with the game, apart from the obvious theme goes to the simple "sensor" that raises the gun (sort of holster) in the game when you raise the controller upward. It can be turned off because the awkward position cannot be held for too long. It has force feedback like any other PS2 controller but with a single motor as far as I noticed, even though it's pretty good. For guys with big hands like you and me, it puts strain on the hands because the button layout is made in a way that has you using the middle finger on both of the hands to push buttons ( with the nail portion of the finger). After a while your grip gets sore. Also the weight is tilted forward making it a little unbalanced. The joysticks are a little small for me, even though my fingers are slim. There is a Mode button that I didn't find out how it's used yet. Otherwise it's a great controller because of the theme and the fact that you can detach the cord in order to display it onto the case. The originality goes also in the secret compartiment for the booklet and a tray for the cord. I've played Flatout2 with a colleague at work and although he doesn't stand controllers in general, opposed to racing wheels, I've used the Chainsaw controller to play. It was ok at first but the acceleration R2 is on the right handle and over time the sheer gripping of the handle is no confortable. My controller is at the moment displayed on my gaming rack and you reminded me that I should try it soon. By the way, there is another Chainsaw controller for the Gamecube which although a little different it has a better looking "rock" pedestal and a yellow handle design. I never got hold of that one unfortunately because of the low audience for Gamecube games and peripherals in general in my country. Keep up the great work and I'll see you soon on the web. My appreciation, Cristian Tudor

The re4 controller is the most interesting controller i've ever owned, however its pretty unusable, its extremely uncomfortable to use, and there was no way I could get used to it over time, however if your wanting it for display its great, it does have 2 features that are kinda interesting, 1. When you pull the chainsaw string it does make the noise of a chainsaw, 2. when using it with re4 it has a slight motion control to it, doesnt work very well at all, but u will understand whenever you get one. :-)

In 1976 Fairchild Channel F video game system came out. It was quite limited in graphics, of course, but it did have interesting controllers. They were hand grip (baseless) joysticks with a knob on top that could be twisted and also pushed down for firing. So you could move in a direction by pushing the stick and rotate your spaceship (or tank, avatar, whatever) by twisting the 6-way knob, and fire your weapon by pushing the knob down. It was very easy and offered excellent control. Unfortunately the controller only works with this antique game system but they are a cool, innovative design.

I remember having an old Atari 2600 controller called "Le Stick" that looked like a dirt bike handle with a red button on it. You held it with the button at the top to depress with your thumb and you tilted the controller to move around. It had mercury switches in it to activate movement as to where you tilted the controller. Very wacky... and very cool for the time in the early 80s.

I totally remember seeing that in some magazines back in the early 80's. I was always curious about it, because the idea seemed so cool... But then again, I was easily swayed by the marketing. Good box art could almost always convince me to buy a crappy game back when I had a NES, SNES and Gen.
@KabukiKid
@KabukiKid 9 лет назад
funkball Heh... yeah, it was more of a cool item than a useful item. I tinkered with it and controls weren't as good as using the good ole standard Atari joystick. heh Was definitely fun to pull out and show company, though. :-)

I have a Le Stick it is a very cool conversation piece as it's the first motion controller ever released. It does work but just barely. You're much better off with an original atari controller. I also have the steel battallion controller for xbox with the green buttons I played it for about a month when I first bought it but it's just been sitting in it's box in my game room for the past couple years now. I trying to get a full Xbox collection so I can't sell or trade it as my collection would be incomplete. It wasn't mentioned in the video but there is 2 steel battalion games that came out for the xbox and it works with both.

Probably not one of the WEIRDEST controllers, but definitely an oddity I don't seem to see most people talk about is the N64 SuperPad. Crazy asymmetrical, the controller seems to be designed to hold at something like a fifteen degree angle, because up on the analog stick isn't forward; instead, forward is up-right on the stick, and the D-pad is angled the same way. On the one hand, it makes getting to every button for the N64 very easy, but on the other the entire controller's weight distribution is just strange, and it makes playing shooters on the N64 a little funky since the Z trigger no longer sits under your index finger, but your middle finger instead. The nicest thing? The controller's built like a friggin' tank. We've had this thing since we got our N64 for Christmas in '97 ('98?) and out of the probably dozen or so controllers we've owned for the console it's the only one that still works, and we've never had to disassemble it once. The analog stick might feel weird, but it's constructed FAR better than any other controller I've seen for the console.
@keeperxiii
@keeperxiii 9 лет назад
It's hard to go crazier than the original N64 controller. I haven't held one in years though. Is it true that the analogue in the N64 pad wears down easily? I also have 2 PS1 dual shocks that are still kicking ass after all these years. I think I can safely throw those things in a volcano and they would still work.
@NEzell-sj1yu
@NEzell-sj1yu 9 лет назад
keeperxiii In my experience, yes, they are very unreliable. They tend to wear out or get sticky over time (and no, I don't mean from things getting spilled in them,) and despite being hailed for having next to no dead zone, they build one over their life until it's no longer enthusiasm that has you slamming the stick around but need, since it won't register anything more subtle. I bought an after-market third party controller that didn't last a month before it had the same problems.
@keeperxiii
@keeperxiii 9 лет назад
N. Ezell Disappointed to hear that. I was expecting better from an official controller. Oh, well. Thanks for the info.
@NEzell-sj1yu
@NEzell-sj1yu 9 лет назад
keeperxiii No problem. Again, it could just be an issue WE had: we were always rather rough on the joysticks, most notably my dad and his friends during Mario Kart matches. Nintendo did make up for it, though. The SuperPad is, as far as I can tell, an official Nintendo product, not a third party release, and it's going on twenty years and shows no signs of stopping any time soon, other than having to glue to analog nub back on the stick (it uses a metal base instead of plastic, likely why it has a better lifespan.)
@keeperxiii
@keeperxiii 9 лет назад
N. Ezell I've heard about the problems with the analog before, which was why I was asking. Now I know what to look forward to if I eventually get a new N64.

For PC gamers wit a missing arm/hand, TrackIR can replace a mouse, in a lot of ways it's easier and more accurate than a mouse.
@tubeisace
@tubeisace 9 лет назад
Anybody suffering hand injuries should consider 2 products which are really cheap: 1: Voiceattack, which is a really accurate voice recognition programme which can take the place of any button on the keyboard as well as mouse controls this is around £8 and Edtracker which is a good alternative to the TrackIR hardwware. I picked mine up for £25. Due to hand problems, I use both in Elite Dangerous and am having a great time. I have also had to learn to use a joystick right handed, which was easier than I thought.

I have the PS2 Dragon Quest Slime controller. It's adorable for one thing, my friend was looking at some figurines I had scattered around my shelves and it accidentally came off its stand (as it is likely to do, not like it's held in) and he realized it was a controller. It's actually quite comfortable in the hands. I've yet to actually ever use it as a controller though, I don't want to risk damaging it when it's so awesome! And the stand it comes with works for displaying it like a normal DQ slime or you can put the top in so you can pick it up again as a controller

I've often wondered about that Resi 4 control my self. Another one I'd like to try is the Megaman gamecube control (The case alone is awesome) but they're well above my budget. Awesome video, as per usual. Rock on.

There was this one weird Quickshot controller for the NES that had a large circle on the front for a dpad, and then the A and B buttons were on the top almost like a stopwatch. AVGN used it in a gag on his show once, but he covered up most of it and just used the big circle in the middle as a "button" to skip to the end of a game. I had one a long time ago as just a curiosity I picked up at a Funco Land, and it was terrible for most games but was quite awesome for RPGs and other less action-oriented games.

I'd love to see a demonstration of the Nintendo 64 glove controller. I've never gotten to use one, but I did have the opportunity to put one on once at a vendor at a convention. It seems that the controller's wrist articulation mimics the action of a large joystick, and then all of the buttons are situated under your fingers. It takes up your whole forearm and hand, and has to be strapped in with velcro. I think it's a very interesting controller and I'd love to see a video on it.

Ok, here as two I had way back in 1996 when I worked at Funcoland: the Namco Negcon and the PlayStation Dual Analog Flight Stick, both for the original PlayStation. The Negcon is apparently still around, but seems to always have been in short supply. Handles like a regular joypad, with the addition of an analog wheel stick horizontally in the middle, and two of the buttons were analog, a rarity for 1996. And wow, was that great for Ridge Racer and Need For Speed! The DAFS was a huge controller. Left and right analog sticks, with triggers and top hat. Imposing. Not great for everything, good for FPS, but rocked for Descent!

I have both the GameCube and PS2 Resident Evil Chainsaw Controllers, my PS2 controller is open, and it is incredibly uncomfortable, but it did sport motion control, hold the controller a certain way and it would raise your gun. Another interesting PS2 controller is the Shadow the Hedgehog controller, its got a pretty sweet paint job on it, but it's pretty dang small too

The Gamester also came out for the xbox as well as the playstation 2. I have to admit, it was one of the best controllers I ever owned. Having all of your control buttons at your fingertips definitely gives you an edge.

i happen to have one of those chainsaws and its great. on top of playing well it comes in a great visual stand, has chainsaw sounds and rumble functions, has a g-sensor (designed to emulate re4's aiming mechanic) and unique blood splatters for each unit :3 there was also a yellow version for the gamecube...!

I was hoping you would mention the RE chainsaw. That thing is indeed awesome. On lucky streak I found a Gamecube version in the toy section of a thrift store. It does take some getting used to but it makes you feel powerful the way you hold it like a real saw. I have mine on the display shelf as it is bad-ass looking.

i had a tan version of the Gamester controller. It takes a little getting used to but it allows you to keep your thumbs on the sticks while playing. No more pausing to switch weapons because you have to press X, now it's right middle finger and never stop moving. i wish they made one for the 360

Ah, the Nyko iType2. I bought that for playing FF11, quickly decided to upgrade to the Logitech Netplay. The iType was awwright for playing Tony Hawk online, though. The favorite unusual controllers in my collection: the U-force for NES, Dance Summit 2001 (Bust a Move) for PS2, and various controllers for Bemani games (DDR, IIDX, GF&DM, Keyboardmania).

For something relatively common, but still really weird, I think the Colecovision Super Action controllers merit a mention.

Oh nice, I actually saw that steel battalion controller at Pink Gorilla in the International District about 2 months ago. I imagine it is the same one, kind of strange to see something you touched in real life in a video.

The PS2 "Soul" controller for Onimusha 3 is/was ridiculous!! Also I used to have this PS1 controller called "The Barracuda" that was a little interesting lol! And, there's the Nyko Zero for the PS2(wireless, AA battery slot and a built-in rechargeable battery!

Some cool controllers I have had over the years include the fishing rod and the samba controllers for dreamcast, the awful, awful glove controller for ps1 that gave you rsi after a few minutes use, a capacitive disk controller for the c64 that you slid your finger around to move (i presume it worked much like a cellphone touchscreen, but simpler, with only 8 touchpoints), and a joystick (c64 again) that had mercury switches enabling you to (barely) control stuff ingame by tilting the thing. On the sinclair zx spectrum i had a joystick interface that had wire jumpers you could set to emulate keypresses with the joystick, bizarre little thing that actually worked brilliantly, especially with games that didnt have kempston/sinclair etc joystick options built in.
