Weird Barbie, Weird Doll to Make? 

I think it would be cool if they made a base doll whose face looks like Kate McKinnon’s. Give it decent blonde/white hair. And then just have that doll be a blank slate for kids to get creative with. Mattel could even include some markers for drawing on the doll or coloring her hair/outfit. It’s not a concept they haven’t done before. I think maybe they’d be afraid of parents getting mad that they encouraged the kids to cut up the doll’s hair because the kid would then feel free to cut the hair off ALL of their dolls. Parents would of course then try to get Mattel to pay them for the damaged dolls - maybe even sue for mental anguish and suffering.

i love the concept of a messed up barbie being a “collectible” it’s kind of nostalgic. it also takes money to even design a imperfect and accurate doll.

In many ways Weird Barbie is the only doll from the movie that I would be interested in getting BUT yes, Weird Barbies aren't dolls which are bought weird - they become that way through being played with too hard etc. Also, IMO she doesn't look weird ENOUGH! This is like "do weird but make it FASHION" - everything is very well done, too well done. The placing of the scribbles on the face seem too nicely done, the dress is too clean and not messy enough etc.

I love the concept of weird Barbie, as a kid that kept all my childhood dolls in really nice shape, I would love to have a weird Barbie, she is just so fun, I will have her hanging off the ceiling fan in my doll room just for laughs and giggles.

As someone who likes movie toys, I absolutely wanted a doll of this character. I personally NEVER would have dreamed of destroying any of my toys as a kid. I don’t think I became aware of this concept until Sid in Toy Story. Also I have no artistic talent at all… so making my own version now wouldn’t work at all. - But I completely understand where you’re coming from.

I think wierd Barbie should have just stayed a movie moment. It was clear they gave her that basic outfit in the movie so that they could justify charging such an outrageous price while putting in as little effort as possible. If the doll came with both the outfits worn in the movie, then maybe I could justify it. It's also clear why it's made to order: this is just simply a way to get one over on the collectors who are completionists.

I feel the exact same way as you. I've got TONS of weird barbies in my parents basement that I can pull out and display for free LOL

I enjoy hearing your thoughts and it makes me chuckle, too, because I loved the Barbie movie and, while walking out of the theater, thought "If they make a weird Barbie doll, I am so buying her"! And when I received the notification about her, I immediately pre-ordered her!🤓and I am so excited about her... 🥳I could not bear to mess up a perfectly fine doll as a collector, so am delighted to have this representation of the quirky, delightful Weird Barbie character. Again, I enjoyed hearing your thoughtful ideas and am intrigued by how differently people think. And I do not think you are wrong about not living the true spirit of weird Barbie, that is true. Thank you for making this video. I was feeling this type of way and how it just felt disingenuous to release this doll when shes really a concept. I wish they wouldve used those resources to do a reproduction Allan doll. You also articulated why I never wanted to buy a forky toy from Toy Story 4 because hes made from the imagination of a child and you just can’t sell that

i was definitely interested in getting weird barbie before realizing it was a mattel creations thing and $50. the day before the pictures came out i found a made to move barbie with chopped off hair at savers out of the bag and just alone on the floor and that got me honestly. got her for $1.50, considering making a "weird barbie" to replicate kate mckinnon's character but i might actually go with something original. i fully agree with you as far as the authenticity of it all goes though. my dolls are mainly thrifted, occasionally bought secondhand or given to me by friends and family members and that "weirdness" is what got me into collecting and like, restoring toys in the first place. especially ponies for that matter but like god yeah i fully agree with you is my point!!

I think the only collectors are going to be MOVIE DOLL collectors. Possibly also the reason it's made to order...not mass produced as they know it won't be everyone's doll.

These Barbie movie dolls... They give us the bare minimum for insane price point. Like yeah we have some of them for 25$. Make them all 25$. And we're good. Make Ken in a fur coat 30$ or 35$. But not 75$ ☠️

Honestly i think the idea of making your own weird barbie is such a good concept-i love making OOAKs but it can be anxiety inducing for me personally tryin to create an OOAK thats “perfect” i like the idea of just going crazy with it like a kid woukd

i think this sort of relates to my conflicting thoughts about the barbie movie in general. as much as i think it’s great that people have been celebrating and enjoying this movie and its themes, it’s also a movie made to promote a multi billion dollar company that has been known to use child labor and take advantage of particularly women in sweat shops abroad. it makes me feel weird to regard this movie very genuinely when i think about mattel as a company, which i hope makes sense

i like kate's barbies design in the movie so thats why i got her, i also have a weird barbie that "happened" lol shes my favorite barbie but why i also got the movie versions is because its just like the fact its from the movie and in her likeness is why i bought her because this movie was one of my favorites of all time and she was my favorite barbie.

One of my friends had the same thoughts when I told them Weird Barbie was being made. So what you're saying makes sense. So as a concept and idea, it's definitely dissonant. But I also see this as them reproducing a character vs producing the concept. It's like Forky toys from Toy Story 4. He/ it was a toy that was made by a child out of literal trash. But the toys made by Disney are manufactured and not made of trash, but mimic that vibe. But what you're saying def makes sense.

I agree the doll's design is pretty movie accurate and it has articulation which we love too see but I don't know if any collector would love to pay for a doll who looks like it was destroyed by a child.Anyway I wish people who buy her enjoy her.

As a child I kept my dolls really pristine, though I did play with them all the time. I never would have ever considered harming them in any way intentionally. Fast forward to adulthood, and I started doing fashion doll and Barbie repaints and customization. Then I graduated to Asian Ball Jointed dolls, that are quite expensive and all about customizing. I did order the Weird barbie, even though I haven't seen the movie. I think she is a quirky, fun sort of art piece, and I will enjoy her for exactly that. Plus, I am a huge kate McKinnon fan. Her price tag doesn't bother me, and I don't mind waiting for her, I have waited as long as a year for an ABJD. All that being said, I do hear, and value your point about "dissonance."

i did go through a phase of scribbling on my dolls with permanent marker. I think i was about 7. They were baby dolls though, not my Barbies. I have no idea why i did that. My mum was mad.

I am a collector of preloved dolls.I often adopt dolls from thrift stores and garage sales .I f someone wants to adopt a weird Barbie I suggest they adopt s second hand Barbie that is played with a little to hard. There are a lot of dolls looked for a forever home that just need TLC .Your wallet and the environment will thank you

I've been down on buying Barbie as of late. I did buy a Fashionista for $5 but that shouldn't really count. I've been into G1 My Little Pony they are cute ,smaller, i can put them anywhere, and they are cheaper.

I also feel strange in getting the weird Barbie. I'm thinking of getting a playline Barbie and customize her.

I've never played with Barbie like that, but I agree with the sentiment - strange Barbies are created, not bought - which, in my opinion, describes the situation very accurately. Weird Barbies are unique, and I think it would be a lot more fun if they released one of those weird marker sets, complete with a sort of classic blonde Вarbie (which was Weird Barbie from the movie, before the kids made her weird - painted the face and hair, cut hair...) so that each person could, if they wanted, make this new Barbie their own version of the weird Barbie from the movie. It would still be very strange, as Barbie marker sets are not usually positioned as collectors' sets, but remember the strange deluxe edition Mermaze Mermaidz ORRA complete with glitter hair gel. I think that making your own version of a weird Barbie would still be more sincere than buying her, even if a person were to copy the patterns on the face of Barbie from the movie. Hell, they could even include instructions on exactly how to "deface" Barbie to make her look just like in the movie, but still encourage buyers to customize the Barbie for themselves. You can't say anything, except that it is a weird release

Oh how funny besides Ken in the fur coat - weird Barbie is what I did to my Barbie’s as a kid in the 80s so I love her. Sadly I don’t have the funds to order her yet hoping I can before 8/18 but I won’t be heartbroken if I miss out on her since I feel like I already grew up with Barbie’s that I would cut off the hair and use highlighters on - I was obsessed with wanting a Jem doll as a kid 😂. Ken in fur coat was $75 he’s my 1st and maybe only doll I’ll have from the Barbie movie unless some others go back in stock and go on sale so expensive. 🩷🩷🩷

I would love for the weird barbie to get a cheaper price and in a design playset for the children and people that don’t want the $50 Mattel creations character doll. And maybe the doll could be a few random versions. I think that would be fun to do.

lol i bought a bunch because i knew it was super limited and made to order. that means only the ones ordered will be made. i kept bad mouthing it to it would not be bought up and be worth more. reselling price is now nearing $200 to $300

I think the long shipping times is probably to deter scalpers from snatching them up. What I am bummed about is that the additional Barbie movies already sold out with no email from Mattel announcing. I love Kate and was looking forward to her performance in the movie which I loved. I told my hubby I wanted one of her. I wished the other dolls had just a long of window for fans to get. $50 is steep I do agree with those who are not happy with the price especially with shipping tacked on and taxes. Lastly, when I was a kid I was not allowed to be creative with my dolls because it cost my mom money, also I am not a customizer so I don't mind Mattel making it for me.

I am honestly so burned out on Barbie movie stuff (and I haven't even seen the movie lmao), so I couldn't care less about this doll 🤣 Her character is definitely a neat and clever concept, but I'm not a Barbie collector so definitely will not be spending $50 on her 😷😷

I still haven’t seen the movie (hopefully this week) so I muted it when you said potential spoilers and then unmuted a bit later but I do know some of the concept so I probably didn’t need to mute but better safe than sorry 😅 But it’s odd for weird Barbie to be on sale for $50 to me too!

It did feel kinda weird (no pun intended) to me that Mattel slapped a $50 price tag on a doll based on a character like this. But I guess on the other hand, the whole point is that it's a specific CHARACTER that they're capturing the likeness off, same with the Margot Robbie Barbies. But since the character embodies the concept of a Barbie naturally made Weird over time, it's more off-putting. Plus, since it's a collector doll it's not like she's intended for rough play; even an adult buying their first doll (probably) wouldn't go wild swinging her around, cutting her hair, etc. And as someone who was really careful not to mess up my dolls when I was little, I even think she'd be a fun little oddity on my shelf! Juuuuuust not for that price 😅 I heard something about her second look from the movie getting a doll later though, so I'm interested in seeing how that one looks!

I am kind of mixed on this doll. I loved Weird Barbie in the movie, but as a doll collector, I love my dolls to look nice and pretty (not saying that the actress isn't pretty or that the character isn't pretty). For 50 dollars, I think I would rather be better off with Western Barbie, for example.

I’ve seen your thoughts elsewhere so you’re definitely not alone. Though I understand the criticism, I dont think any of the adults that have this feeling are going to play with their dolls so hard they will end up with a weird barbie and making a custom is not the same as loving a doll so much she becomes weird. This is really a kid specific concept. Mattel already reaches kids who do this to dolls with their other barbies at much more reasonable price points then any of the barbie movie merch. Fashionistas are really made to become weird barbies lol.

For once I disagree with you, I love her. This take is a bit too deep for what this is. As a kid I loved my Barbies so much but I loved them as nicely and gently as I could. I think as a result that we were poor as hell. I still have all of them too! I never once drew on them. The most I did was cut a little bit of one of my Barbies hair and I mean a little bit not a crazy chop like this. Another one of my dolls was "weird" in that she had a broken neck peg that got progressively worse because I would shove her neck down more without knowing that she was getting more messed up by doing that. Like I taped her up because I was so distressed that her neck was broke,. (thank you a thousand splendid dolls, I learned a lot of your broken neck video.). Maybe this is my way of being like "oh hey I never actually drew on my dolls but now I have this and it's kind of funny" and the big bonus is I loved this actresses work in this movie. I guess I could make a "weird" Barbie but I want the accurate boots and the outfit which I sure as hell can't make myself. I know others can but I personally don't know how to customize anything to that level. But Yeah I don't think she is worth $50 but I generally don't agree with their price tags on Barbie or MH or anything. I still bought her because she will be at least 3x the price one day and I will regret it HARD but all these dolls should be $35 - $40 at most, come on Mattel.

I think maybe it’s more of just making a doll representing her character that people may want to have as a memory. Some people really like to get dolls from movies that they enjoy. Idk I kinda disagree w you on this one. I for one don’t want to destroy a Barbie to the point of it looking like weird Barbie. As an adult, that’s just not how I interact w dolls anymore. I thought it was really cool because it gives an opportunity for us that don’t interact that way with dolls to still have a memory of a time we did.

Mattel already pulled the old bait and switch that had me leaving the theater in tears so I’ll be darned if I spend another dime on their overly priced movie dolls etc. They screwed me once - I’ll never get my money back for the movie tickets. I’m not gonna just bend over and beg for more. To heck with them. I’ll get a thrifted doll and create my own weird Barbie. That’s more in line with the spirit of the character anyway.
