It's not all doom and gloom. Mega Pinsir (Ultra Sun): After Mega Evolution, it becomes able to fly. Perhaps because it's so happy, it rarely touches the ground.
not to mention that its non mega entry in US mentions that it actually gets along very well with Heracross in Alola on the heartbreaking side, though, is Amaura: "Amaura was restored successfully, but it's not expected to live long because of the heat of the current environment."
I think mega kangaskhan has one about it being happy seeing it’s child grow up. But another one says it’s worried about it’s future if it can only fight.
my headcanon is that when gen 6 said Mega Evolution required a strong bond, THIS is what they meant. Not a strong bond to activate, but a strong bond to not let the power flow out uncontrollably
I guess he hasn't learned to add talking to his illusions yet. I remember in BW2 you can talk to a hiker that tells you about Zoroark before revealing that he's a Zoroark and running off.
My favorite is Aerodactyl's Ultra Sun entry: "Restored from DNA found in amber, this Pokémon exhibited ferocity that was greater than expected. Some casualties resulted. "
Mega Ampharos's Ultra Sun entry reads: "Excess energy from Mega Evolution stimulates its genes, and the wool it had lost grows in again." Unlike so many others, nothing bad, cruel, or horrifying happens to Ampharos when it mega evolves. No, it just becomes F A B U L O U S
Absolutely! Or, at the very least, they could make it another Affection-based evolution. It'd be nice to finally have more than one of those, and it would still fit the feed-them-many-beans idea! (and it could make sense in-game too, since I'm pretty sure Salazzle shows her reverse harem exactly NO LOVE AT ALL.)
They could even have a scrappier, almost crazed look for the evolved form that is more malnourished and crazed for food. Could have a pokedex entry talking about how they've evolved past their simp like nature and now have a resentment towards them. Could possibly even have an ability that's the opposite to rivalry where it improves attack power against an opponent that's the same gender and decreases it against one that's the opposite. Maybe called "Sympathy"
I'm a big fan of Paras's Ultra Moon entry: The mushrooms, known as tochukaso, are controlling the bug. Even if the bug bugs the mushrooms, they tell it to bug off.
How Many Bugs Are In There? Pun Oops I Meant To Say One Two Three FOUR Wait.... I Feel Like I'm Going to... Sneeze... Aaaaaah Aaaaaaaah AXEW! Oops I meant Aaaaachuuuuuuu!
Here are some other dark and silly ones that he didn't share: *Paras* (Ultra Moon): The mushrooms, known as tochukaso, are controlling the bug. Even if the bug bugs the mushrooms, they tell it to bug off. *Haunter* (Ultra Moon): It's dangerous to go outside alone on nights when you're feeling sad. Haunter will catch you, and you won't be able to go back home. *Gengar* (Ultra Moon): Even your home isn't safe. Gengar will lurk in whatever dark corner of a room it can find and wait for its chance to catch its prey. *Pineco* (Ultra Sun): Motionless, it hangs from trees, waiting for its bug Pokémon prey to come to it. Its favorite in Alola is Cutiefly. *Glalie* (Ultra Sun): It freezes its prey and chews them whole. However, it prefers to eat Pokémon like Vanillite that are already frozen. *Relicanth* (Ultra Moon): The reason it hasn't changed at all in a hundred million years is that it's apparently already a perfect life-form. *Lucario* (Ultra Moon): Lucario reads its opponent's feelings with its aura waves. It finds out things it would rather not know, so it gets stressed out easily. *Beheeyem* (Ultra Sun): With its psychic powers, it rewrites its opponents’ memories. You, too, may have already had your memories rewritten. *Mimikyu* Disguised Form (Ultra Moon): A gust of wind revealed what hides under this Pokémon's rag to a passing Trainer, who went home and died painfully that very night. *Mimikyu* Busted Form (Ultra Sun): It stands in front of a mirror, trying to fix its broken neck as if its life depended on it. It has a hard time getting it right, so it's crying inside.
Cell : I have become the perfect life form Mewtwo : I am the Ultimate life form! Shadow the edgehog : What did you just say? Relicanth: relicanth (good joke)
Mimikyu got THREE sad/creepy new entries! -Disguised Form (Ultra Moon): A gust of wind revealed what hides under this Pokémon's rag to a passing Trainer, who went home and died painfully that very night. -Busted Form (Ultra Sun): It stands in front of a mirror, trying to fix its broken neck as if its life depended on it. It has a hard time getting it right, so it's crying inside. -Busted Form (Ultra Moon): Sad that its true identity may be exposed, Mimikyu will mercilessly seek revenge on any opponent that breaks its neck.
Mimikyu's got WORSE in Ultra Moon: A gust of wind revealed what hides under this Pokémon's rag to a passing Trainer, who went home and died painfully that very night.
I love Alolan Ninetales' Ultra Sun entry. "The reason it guides people all the way down to the mountain's base is that it wants them to hurry up and leave."
ShadowSpade1315 But what's also makes Alolan Vulpix's entry in Ultra Sun scary. "If you carelessly approach it because it's cute, the boss of the pack, Ninetales, will appear and freeze you."
ShadowSpade1315 So all those Alolan Vulpix you find at the base of Mount Lanakila are outcasts from the packs on the mountain itself, or simply got separated from said packs. That's kinda sad...
Let's not forget Lucario's Dex entry in Ultra Moon: "Lucario reads its opponent's feelings with its aura waves. It finds out things it would rather not know, so it gets stressed out easily." they know
Ryaquaza 1 me too... Oh ho ho i wish Drampa was real so I can get some sweet revenge to my horrific bully from the 3rd grade (seriously that kid literally threw me too a FRICKIN desk when I was 8 FRICKIN 8 I really wish he suffers the most horrible death I can imagine!!! 😬)
Huh but... I know the boring answer is "lt's a video game" but if all that's stopping Male Salandits from evolving not being well fed, can't a trainer remedy this by taking care of them?
In order to supplement the diets to their bodies? I could believe that, maybe if they evolved if they gave all their food they wouldn't have enough to eat and just die.
How about this one for Misdreavus: Ultra Sun: What gives meaning to its life is surprising others. If you set your ear against the red orbs around its neck, you can hear shrieking. I was legit disturbed by that entry.
Mega Tyranitar just sounds very painful. Also, am I a horrible person for wanting to see Mega Metagross fight like its dex entry suggests? I’m genuinely curious to see how that would actually play out.
Xx_Lunaroo_xX Actually, you could be a lot further away from the actual Pokedex entry, although it's much milder than your description. It just sheds its fur and gains combative instincts.
In defense of Mega Evolution (at least for my boi): "After Mega Evolution, it becomes able to fly. Perhaps because it is so happy, it rarely touches the ground." - Ultra Sun, Mega Pinsir Dex Entry.
Alakazam is the real MVP, imagine you find yourself with a spoon that makes everything delicious and then you give it to your friend like a massive bro.
spindash64 I personally prefer to run Life Orb on Alakazam. Less spoons, but due to Alakazam's hidden ability Magic Guard, no recoil damage from Life Orb (but you still get the attack buff from Life Orb)
Geez, with all these terrible entries about Mega Evolution, I'm surprised we didn't get something along the lines of: "Mega Ampharos's hair contains the DNA of dragons. It has taken over its host mind, making it nothing but a ruthless killing machine." Or... "Mega Gallade has become a ruthless monster of carnage. The only thing keeping it from running loose and destroying everything in sight is the cape on its back." Or how about... "Mega Evolution increases Mega Audino's hearing by 7,000,000,000 percent. It keeps a smile on its face to mask all the pain and agony it hears upon transformation." And maybe even... "Additional gemstones grant Mega Diancie more power. The excessive pains growing these stones are felt even after reverting from Mega Evolution." Can't wait until next gen gives us all the tragic tales of the failed attempts to form Mega Flygon!
That's the point. My personal headcanon tell me the reason in-universe why there is no Mega Flygon is because all attempts to create one were completely futile and disastrous, with either the trainer testing the Mega Stone dying, the team trying to create said Mega Stone dying from a lab accident, Flygon itself dying from the energy overload, or a combination of all the above. Eventually, the team behind the cutting of the Stone realized that there would be no way that this could actually work, so they decided to put a can on the operation. Sweet dreams!
Austin Argo Here's a made-up one for Mega Flygon: "The flapping of its gigantic wings creates a perpetual cyclone of dirt and sand around itself. It blinds enemies and prey so painfully, they don't see Mega Flygon's claws savagely tearing them apart."
Outsiders: Pokémon is just so kid friendly I can’t get into it. *read the Pokédex to them* Outsiders: dude, this Pokémon thing is kinda messed up. What’s wrong with you?
I think Kukui may have a rivalry with Sycamore. The Alola entries on mega evolution are written with an obvious bias and exaggeration. They are radically different from other depictions elsewhere. The trainer's emotions are what enable mega evolution. A trainer that has a weak heart or evil intentions is what causes the Pokémon to go beserk and grow unstable. I think he is only reporting the effects of a failed mega evolution to make z-moves look superior. Want to see a z-move that hurts someone, look no further than Necrozma's z-move. It physically exhausts the trainer and then steals the light of the world.
This makes a lot of sense. It could be a cultural thing. Alolans probably view Mega Evolution as unnatural, while Kalosians think the same about Z-Moves.
Cubone’s not depressing Pokédex entry: Cubone finds humans to play with. It hugs tight to the human it finds at night because it cries for its dead mother.
Wish you had picked the US entry for Goodra. "It's very friendly toward people. If you grow too close to it, Goodra will hug you with its sticky, slime-covered body. *Don't get mad.*" Like, I don't know whether the game is mocking me or warning me.
If the only reason a male Salandit can't evolve is because of malnutrition, if a trainer were to hatch a baby, male Salandit, and give it the exact same diet and amount that a female would eat, would it be able to evolve? Or was this reason morphed into a genetic trait over time and now the males being unable to evolve has become permanent and cannot be fixed? Pretty interesting... It's also making me think how badass a male Salazzle would have looked.
Maybe Game Freak would soon introduce a male Salandit Evolution that has the biology that that Salandit grew to be so hungry, it left the pack to find food and grew to become one of the most ruthless Pokémon in the (Insert Region Name Here) Region.
Hey, not every Mega Evolution is bad: Mega Lopunny's Ultra Moon entry: "Mega Evolution awakens its combative instincts. It has shed any fur that got in the way of its attacks. Mega Ampharos' Ultra Sun entry: Excess energy from Mega Evolution stimulates its genes, and the wool it had lost grows again. ...These were the only good ones I could find apart from Mega Ampharos' Ultra Moon entry, but I didn't wanna repeat the same Pokemon twice.
These are still bad in a way... I mean it doesn't sound like a genetic miracle or proper progression. More like the thirst for power is so excessive that it aggressively alters your body that nature never intended.
Patricia Luna still though, while most Mega Pokemon are out writhing in pain or mauling their opponents to the ground, at least Mega Ampharos gets to look fabulous.
Nice selection, JWittz! Though, can we please discuss Oranguru's Ultra Sun Dex entry at some point? How has this entry not been making the rounds or even gone viral?? "It normally spends its time meditating in the treetops. It throws Poké Balls and gives other Pokémon orders as it pleases." Uh, a Pokémon ordering other Pokémon around isn't so surprising (as with Vespiqen and Combee or Salazzle and Salandit, or a pack of wild Mightyena, for example)... but _throwing Pokéballs?!!_ Where is the line drawn between a Pokémon and a Trainer, at this point? Could Oranguru become Pokémon Trainers? What are the implications of a Pokémon being a 'Trainer' to other Pokémon???
The Stuffle thing isnt Farts, there are many animals with scent glands/organs. Its called 'musking' and is usually used to mark territory or give warnings
They set up that Ghastly Pokedex entry all the way back in Diamond and Pearl just to have it pay of several generations later. Some people at Game Freak have some real commitment to the Pokédex.
So male Salandits can't evolve due to being underfed? And they can't evolve if we give them treats in the Pokemon care mode (forget the name right now) because...?
because they don't actually eat it. Each time you save and quit, your male Salandit spits up his food, escapes his Pokéball and goes and feeds the females.
Here's a made up one for Mega Gallade "It's blades become even sharper and its fighting style becomes more deadly. It gains a huge fascination in card games"
I know, they look kinda cool the first time, but Z-moves are not as good as using a life orb or an item that boosts the power of a particular type and the cutscenes overstay their welcome. The kicker is that mega evolution was said to be made from a bond between trainer and Pokemon. Maybe more could have been made if pseudo-legendaries didn't have mega evolutions.
Z-moves almost guarentee a KO With the bulk this meta has, you can't always win with Life orb or....scarves...and get beat back by either a hard hitting attack or trick room. sure you can make the arguement against some megas that the normal form is better off with a different item but I've turned plenty of battles with a z-move to take out a potential sweeper or wall
To try to make their players not use Mega evolution because people kept complaining about the unbalanced gameplay. This occurred because mega evolution was used as a marketing tool and given to fan-favourite Pokemon. They did not consider pseudo-legendary Pokemon such as Metagross were fan favourites just because they are strong. Also, they're trying desperately to make people care about Z-moves (personally, I do not)
Houndoom: Oh god, you poor thing... Metagross: BADASS! Tyranitar: Jesus... oh god! When you look at it, you're seeing- GOOD GOD... Sableye: Ehhh.. well, it's bad, but considering that there are horrific creepy pastas about this one... Scisor: NOOOOOO!!!! No no no! We must burn the energy off for it! We must cool it down somehow, teach it mega laser or something!
If you think the Stufful entry is wierd, wait until you hear about how foxes and other canids communicate in the same way IRL. it's why they always sniff each others' rears in greetings.
the ninetales US entry:The reason it guides people all the way down to the mountain’s base is that it wants them to hurry up and leave. mawile US:A cunning and terrifying Pokémon, its cuteness makes opponents let down their guard-and then it swallows them whole with its huge jaws.UM:It has two mouths. The big jaws on the back of its head can’t taste anything, so that’s the mouth it uses to eat foods it doesn’t like.mega form It has an extremely vicious disposition. It grips prey in its two sets of jaws and tears them apart with raw power.
Mega Metagross's Ultra Moon dex entry is terrifying: "When it knows it can't win, it digs the claws on its legs into its opponent and starts the countdown to a big explosion."
Wait, if you need a strong bond with your Pokemon to mega evolve them.... But most megas are suffering.... Maybe you need a strong bond with your pokemon so that they still fight for you, even when you put them through Mega Evolution?
Ultra Moon Mimikyu - A gust of wind revealed what hides under this Pokémon’s rag to a passing Trainer, who went home and died painfully that very night.
Machoke's Ultra Moon's entry basically adds the fact that artists use it as their models. Cause people want a Renaissance style marble statue of a lizardman bodybuilder/wrestler.
I love that they decided to call drampa the "placid" pokemon... if anyone out there gets the chance, please name your drampa "Trogdor". (or Puff; either one will do).
Pokemon Moon - Mimikyu: “A gust of wind revealed what hides under this Pokemon’s rag to a passing trainer, who went home and died painfully that very night.”
My personal favorite Dex entry is Absol's Ultra Sun entry: "The only thing unlucky about Absol is its appearance. It protects fields and warns people of disaster, so one ought to be grateful for it." I just like how the Pokedex is telling people to be grateful to absol after it's been accused of causing disasters it tries to warn people about.
Don’t worry, I’m sure no National Dex is just a temporary thing until they move onto the Switch, obviously way more powerful hardware can store more Pokémon than ever!
That Stufful thing is actually somewhat true. Panda bears actually rub thier bottoms on trees for other pandas to follow the scent or to communicate. They usually do this when they're ready to breed.
Another silly one, Alolan Ninetales's entry in Ultra Sun: "The reason it guides people all the way down to the mountain's base is that it wants them to hurry up and leave."
I actually hate how they changed the concept of Mega Evolution to be as unnatural and as brutal as it is. It's almost like they did it as an excuse to make it look bad so they don't have to include it as much in the games now. I miss how much of the lore in Gen 6 was dedicated to Mega Evolution.
Lily Mega Eevee I know. In Gen 6, both games and anime, so much was dedicated to it and I was looking forward to the future and how it would expand upon this. But they just treated it like a gimmick. Mostly because of competitive, I assume which is pathetic if true. It was only a couple of Megas that needed nerfed and Mega Rayquaza should've never been legal. Now I can't trust them not to treat Z-Moves the same. Sorry for the long rant btw lol.
I think it's a bit early to say they ENTIRELY ditched megas, they were added in like, last gen, and we're only fed these entries from Rotom's perspective. ..Not to mention, not all mega entries are bad? Ampharos' says it just stimulated its genes, causing it to regrow lost wool. And Pinsir's makes it happy because it's able to fly.
I was thoroughly amused by this video! Thank you! I can imagine how some of this went. “Renae, I’m gonna borrow your copy of Moon for a bit.” *chucks Sun and Moon in the bin* (to self: that was a perfect shot!) *scrambles to retrieve boxes from the bin* I absolutely loved the entries for Eevee and Bouncesweet. The bobble-head imagery was perfect. Thanks for another entertaining video.
Honestly, why are people so hung up on there not being a National Dex anymore? I'm actually pretty happy that they made it Region Only. It makes it have replay value long after the 3DS becomes obsolete. Seriously, try finishing the Full Dex in Black/White 2 now with no online servers. It's almost impossible. 😧
BBDeathz You have to elaborate on your comment. From what I'm grasping at seems to imply that it means less native Pokémon. That's not true in the slightest. Most entries nowadays typically have 300-400ish Pokémon native to the region. All others were trades from previous entries. By this logic, the only thing that changed was the amount of Dex entries being limited to Region only. I think this right here was a smart move on GameFreak's part imo.
I mean less Pokémon to actually get. Most people who I've seen disliking the missing national dex don't see that longevity because they are done faster and they see no charm in getting Pokémon when they are not needed and you dont have an entry for it. You may not need to trade in 20 years when online function is dead. I for example dislike that I cant read new entries, see all the animations etc. Im glad that I can get the shiny charm faster, but I still would like to see the details without starting bank.
Ultra Sun entry for Kanto Persian: "This Pokémon is popular with rich people. It’s also *targeted by hunters who are after the jewel in its forehead.*"
I wanted to see entries for the Starter Megas. Especially Zard, considering just how much they hyped him up for being able to Mega evolve seriously, having Mega X appear like that outta nowhere was almost kinda touching.
The national dex is in Bank, unfortunately. It's looking like the games themselves won't have one, because they want you to use the integrated National Pokedex in Pokemon Bank.
yeah, getting the shiny charm is easier now, but you cant look up their animations when they have no dex entry, no new entry at all (bank only shows gen 6 for a pkmn then) and probably some people who dont even know all pkmn bc they dont see them now. imagine new players only seeing 400
