I kinda resent the people saying the stories of those 2 women are "extreme, isolated cases" when Ontario is having one of the worst affordable housing crises. There's no way those two women choosing to end it all because of a lack of housing isn't related to the absolute shitshow Ontario housing is right now (and has been for a while).

I agree. Being priced out of my hometown where all my friends are (Mississauga) is deeply upsetting. I have trouble making friends and getting close to people so it’s not so easy to just “go somewhere cheaper” and I know a lot of people are in a similar spot. Even people who aren’t on ODSP like I am are struggling to afford housing. It feels like people are trying to sweep the issue under the rug when they say bullsh*t like “it’s an extreme, isolated case” and it’s frankly disgusting.

100% feel the same... It's really, really clear to anyone who has been attempting to find affordable housing that this is a case of two women who were failed by their system so hard they chose to use the last resort. They wouldn't have needed to had there been some effort put into stemming the rise of unaffordable housing and looking into more rent-controlled zones. :| This is very sad, and I guarantee there will be more people like this (even if it isn't through MAID - there is bound to be at least as many who didn't do this the 'official' way).

What happened was a few weeks ago police started shooting unarmed protesters with live ammunition, and about a week after that a group of progovernment protesters came and started to wreck tents, signs and beat up people with bats. As a Canadian, the solution to the two cases described is not pulling back on MAiD laws. Everyone has a right to die with dignity, we should not take that away. The solution is to make it so that the ODSP and other disability stipends/welfare are enough money to live a good, comfortable life on. Everyone deserves to live with dignity, even if they can't work. I am able bodied, and only suffer with severe ADHD and GAD, and I live in one of Canada's cheaper housing markets. I would simply NOT be able to live alone on the amount of cash provided under the ODSP. The ODSP needs to give people the equivalent to a full time minimum wage job AT LEAST - which is over double what the ODSP provides.

I have to say with this specific case, why would they still be looking in TORONTO? it's one of the most expensive places to live in Canada and with their specific needs... they will literally never be able to meet them in a city like that. They'd be far better off financially and healthwise if they were to move to somewhere outside of the city. The fact that they'd go to "kill myself" before "leave city" is just astonishing to me.
@jui-imouto-chan
@jui-imouto-chan 2 года назад
@@tylociraptor8131 if they have health issues, they have to live somewhere they can access the healthcare they need. A lot of times, further from urban areas (which are more expensive), it is incredibly difficult to find specialists or medical centers with right equipment/facilities for specific health needs and concerns.
@InfinityKrompt
@InfinityKrompt 2 года назад
@@tylociraptor8131 I can imagine a number of reasons why they chose not to leave Toronto. Generally speaking its more expensive to live outside of a city in the suburbs than it is to live in the city (best of both worlds), so you'd have to go FAR outside of the city. Which in turn means having to rely heavily on existing infrastructure. That level of disability would (most likely) make it illegal to drive, so you would need to rely on public transportation. Specialists generally do not exist outside of major cities. You would end up spending more to travel to the city in terms of money and time. And that's the other issue, if you're living off 1200 CAD a month, you likely don't have a large enough cushion of funds to afford to move far away from a city in the first place.

Bipolar guy has a few months of depression and then just kills himself. Could have gone back and forth between good, OK and bad episodes throughout life, but instead the darkest version of the bipolar person accepted the government's kind offer to help kill off the whole guy. So why would they raid a refugee camp that exists because of them and just start firing at them when people start throwing rocks. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Besides, if they really didn't kill her, why raid her house? Why demand no Palestinian flags be risen when they are standing in Palestine so they don't even have the right to say that? I grew up WAY under the poverty line suffering shit people (let alone small children) should never have to endure. I am now in a much more stabilized place financially but issues of access will always inspire great empathy in me. Let’s be clear - physician assisted suicide should be a right that we have. I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently. I have a sister who I’m currently helping to take care of who has treatment-resistant suicidal depression, among other things. That’s my honest belief. At the very least, she would have her dignity again, one way or the other, And it horrifies me that there are people today in North America who are being pushed into this sort of situation out of a problem as fixable as improper resource allocation. It’s unconscionable Human beings are nothing without their innermost dignity, I think, and our societies have taken it upon themselves to claw their way into the very hearts and souls of some folks and tear that dignity right out of them. That poor woman shouldn't have to choose between those two things. Assisted death in general is a complex topic and is something that should be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Looking at this, the woman is choosing death because the government otherwise failed her. That is not fair, and that's not a real choice.

On the most basic level, as an audience member, you enter into a pact with the actors on stage. You're there to watch and enjoy their performance, but what happens on that stage and in that theater is meant to be enjoyed in that theater. To record artistic work without permission is wrong, breaks that pact, and takes the magic away from the play. It's just not what you do! But then to make matters so much worse, SO MUCH WORSE, to record a scene where an actor is in a vulnerable position (like being nude) and to share it with the entire world is so terrible. No values, ethics, or respect by the person who did that. I hope that people do not look up the photo/video and try to respect his privacy.

Regarding the assisted death story: it feels like society failed these people. They should have been able to find living situations that allowed them to have happy, healthy lives to the best extent possible given their pre-existing conditions. They should never have had to even consider this option. That it reached this point is heartbreaking. I hope that added attention to this causes both significant changes to how services are provided to those with chronic illnesses/disabilities in the long term, and that in the short term that some other acceptable options become available to these people so they have another option besides ending their lives.
@nerdjournal

It doesn't just feel like we failed these people. We did. People can raise ten of thousands for a person who glues their own hair. But people. Actually struggling with real diseases. I dunno. Someone should really start some gofundme's for people in these types of situations. And try to get people with bigger platforms to help promote the campaigns. I mean in all honesty. If we as a society really cared. We would have made a site that tries to fund changing people's lives instead of funding people's shitty indie movies. I mean lots of us sit around mad the government won't create better programs for basic needs and people who actually need help. But we could fund it and start doing it ourselves. We could. Look I get it, seeing money you worked hard for going away to the void of the government sucks, it feels bad and there's no way around that. But I think it is also important to entertain the idea that regardless of the effort some people put in, they simply can't function to the ability you can. They deserve help, and deserve a solid quality of life. Everyone I know on income support is below our national poverty line. Literally being punished for circumstances completely out of our control. The euthanizing of the poor argument reminds me of the pro-life argument. Yes, it would be great if everyone could live a long, natural life, but society isn't built for that. The woman highlighted in this video is proof that, if you want to stop poor people from killing themselves, outlawing euthanasia isn't the right move. Clean, affordable housing is the first step. And free food and healthcare should go right along with that. Don't blame these people for euthanizing themselves or the hospitals that help. Blame the people who are making living unbearable.
@cosmicowllie7394

I'm pro-euthanasia, and I'm pro allowing people with debilitating illness to seek out euthanasia for themselves too, not just those who are already dying. The bar should be high for that, though, and all other options exhausted. These two people, they should be given access to the kinds of housing that would allow them to live a better quality of life. If the housing doesn't help them, then euthanasia could be considered again, but they should be given the opportunity to try and have their life improved first. This shouldn't be an issue of classism, everyone deserves a decent quality of life at minimum, no matter their health or wealth, and no matter their ability to work or not. I have ASD along with other conditions, and it prevents me from working. I'm scared of the future especially when I can no longer rely on my family to help me, so that story hit way too close to home, except in my country, assisted suicide isn't an option. It is illegal entirely.

And when they had CERB during the first few waves of covid, they claimed that the $2000 a month payments were “the basic income amount “. Anyone else see how screwed up these numbers are? Sometimes the stress of being force to live with so little money is more stressful then the condition that keeps you from working in the first place. thank you for covering the MAiD stories, Phil. more people need to hear about what's happening here in Canada. i'm a disabled canadian and last year's extension of MAiD disturbs me greatly. i fear a lot of folks like me are going to die because they don't have access to what they need to make life worth living. these things are achievable, but the government chose to implement MAiD instead of actually improving our lives. in the midst of a pandemic, no less! and if the use of MAiD for poverty becomes commonplace, i fear that there will be less done to improve our living conditions. it's cheaper to let us die than to help us live, as sick as that sounds. i believe in the choice to die. but, i think in order for that choice to be ethical, we need the choice to live as comfortably as possible too. not having access to a life worth living makes the choice to die coercive, in my opinion.

The government didn't really have a choice. The Supreme Court ruled that limiting assisted suicide to the terminally ill was discriminatory. It's happening in the US too. My sister has some disabilities and was living on her own with help from SS and housing. Last year her landlady couldn't evict her or not renew the lease, so instead she got around that by removing herself from the housing program and saying she could renew and stay but it went from 500 to 750. Not only couldn't she pay the original price herself, and not work more (and keep SS), she of course couldn't pay the increased price. And that landlady was a total manipulative cunt to begin with and there had been other incidences where they tried to take advantage of my sister. So she tries to find a place but there's literally nowhere in this town with apartments available, especially when landlords can't evict yet and no one has any money. There's places "available" but they aren't in the housing program or are unwilling to join it. So if my parents didn't have her room available she would effectively be homeless despite still being actively involved in governmental programs, because the programs don't do enough to actually advocate and support people in those positions. She'd be worse off if my mom wasn't constantly advocating for her because she doesn't have anyone actually doing that and mediating bullshit like this to begin with.

As someone in Canada, I think the root problem with those stories *isn't* the AS accessibility, but the poverty that lead to them seeing it as the only option. There ARE ways that both of their lives could, at the very least, be made manageable, but making those options only available to people who already have the wealth to attain and sustain those means (since they usually either cannot work or work for long enough to afford care) is what drives those who are already struggling financially to lose faith that there are ANY avenues they can take to find relief and support. We need to be taking FAR better care of our most vulnerable citizens and everyone fucking knows it. Housing is way too expensive in all the places that need workers, but those workers aren't making enough to keep themselves housed and fed, disability payments are nowhere close to high enough to actually ensure people are taken care of, our healthcare system (while not as garbage as the US) still does not have fully fleshed out support systems for the most vulnerable. It's a fucking mess, man.

@night fall Canadian here! Sometimes these provisions you’ve (very luckily and I’m glad you are!) taken rightful advantage of are just unavailable to certain people because of what disabilities they might have, or genuinely just because the government doesn’t want to give them to you. Like the women in this video did absolutely everything they could but were only treated as pests. Or for example, my little sister was supposed to be given benefits because due to her vision disabilities she’ll never be able to drive and a couple other things, and we were told an amount we’d be getting and everything. Then the government decided they just didn’t want to give it to us and rejected it. We’ve done everything we could but they literally just went “no”. Sometimes they kinda just decide to fuck over people.

I can speak on physician-assisted suicide. My 90-year-old mother died this Sunday, Mother's Day. Two years ago while at a "rehab", mother somehow had her back broken. My sister and I immediately brought her home with the help of hospice, and we took care of her for these two years, which was a blessing. This last month has been hell. Up until a month ago, she was fine. She was in a hospital bed here at home with me and my sister. She could still talk and enjoy the company of relatives and neighbors who dropped in to visit with her. But a month ago, almost overnight, something happened. She quit eating and drinking. There was nothing we could do except put in a feeding tube, which she refused, which she had the right to refuse. For a month, my sister and I gave mother water in a 1 mm syringe. She suffered greatly at the end and there was nothing we could do. She died when her lungs filled with fluid and she could not breathe. Indiana does not have physician-assisted death but hell, we just elected a murderer for a political office. Mom's funeral is tomorrow.

However, I have a suspicion that the usual crowd who'd be screaming about this would rather have the law appealed and then not bother fixing the problems with housing that led to these cases, which would be particularly ghoulish. Everyone who is suffering deserves to be able to leave their lives with dignity if that is what they wish. So yes, this is a problem, but it's a problem not because they have the ability to choose death, but because their financial status combined with their medical problems made them feel like that was their only option. You cannot take away their choice, the only solution is better housing.

I wanna say something as a Canadian young adult, I’ve lived with mental illness due to childhood abuse, sure you “can get over it” or “grow up” but after struggling with even the mental health system I honestly lost hope in our government, I had a doctor tell me nothing is wrong with me after I sat crying to him about my struggles and different things I’ve tried to help myself after years of therapy during my childhood, my grandparent who took me in fighting to the point I didn’t want to be a burden on them. I live off of government assistance due to health reasons after I struggled from serious mental health issues. I just wish people realize that yes it could be worse, but everyone has the right to live even with a disability or mental illness without having to worry about going below the poverty line. Also the senior payment OSDP is sooo bad that even my grandparents can’t care for themselves and have to cut corners with things. Hope this sheds some light, although this is my thoughts and feelings.

"Just find work" "try harder" "you just aren't motivated enough" "just don't be sad" "have you tried X, Y, Z?". The stigma never ends in my experience. I had a series of terrible events to start this year, I hospitalized because I told a worker I didn't want to live. The doctors and nurses talked to me with a very dismissive condescending tone "Have you taken your meds?" "see you're only feeling this way because you didn't take your meds". Occasionally you find absolutely amazing healthcare workers, but they are rare. It baffles me that people don't understand that chemically my brain functions differently, I can't just "be happy". When I first got coverage in my province, I got $866 but lived in group housing so rent was covered. Over the years my money has been getting less and less, now I only get $500 a month. There is not a single unit in the entire city I live in that is possible to rent, I even had a housing team help me for months. We had to negotiate a place, that I still can't afford. @@AangAirB I'm sorry you're having a hard time. I've been told that I may not process joy the same way as others, which may predispose me to depression/anxiety. However a vague diagnosis (with no diagnostic brain tests) doesn't really mean much imo. The only thing that matters is what I can do to help improve mood and daily functionality. I would offer you the same advice, try not to think too much about how your brain is working, just focus on what makes you feel better and what doesn't (this can include medications, but I'm also taking about activities, patterns of thinking, etc.). A diagnosis is basically meaningless beyond how it informs treatment options so don't get too caught up in a given label.. especially since misdiagnosis is common with mental illness. For me CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) is what I would credit with basically saving my life, or at least drastically improving my daily mood. I would suggest you look into that kind of therapy if you haven't already... and even if you have, it can take years for things to finally "click"... and even then it's less of a click and more of a slow progressive change in thoughts and behaviors which together improve mood and functionality. CBT is basically thinking about thinking, and you have the power to change what you think about or how intensely you weight certain thoughts. (as in negative thoughts can be reduced, with less emphasis placed on them, and more belief and focus on the positive, on the things that give you energy rather than sap it)... but it takes time and effort. A heck of a lot better than endless medication regimes imo though. It's not some kind of brain hack or trick or anything either, it's just about being more aware of our thoughts and how they affect our behaviours and ultimately our emotions, and how these 3 things are always connected. I'm a healthcare professional in training so I hope my advice means something and is more significant than being told to "feel better" or "suck it up", or "stop being so lazy". All of which I've heard before too. The other piece of advice I have is to do an exercise that helps identify your values. There's different ways to do this that are easy enough, but the simplest method I can think of is simply having a big list of things that people generally value (wealth, family, success, community, status, intelligence, etc) and whittle that down to about 5 core values that really matter to you... then see if you're actually fulfilling any of them in a meaningful way. If not then start thinking about ways you can. And if you already are then take solace in the fact that even with a lot of struggles you're doing things that matter and you care about. This might just come across as lame platitudes but these are two things that have absolutely helped me and are backed up my mental health professionals. I spent 15+ years in a state of disillusion, trying both prescription and illegal drugs (and talk therapy, and groups, and Electroshock therapy...everything) until I finally found a solid psychotherapy group (basically more talk therapy, but very guided by a psychologist and not a mere support group) that broke loose all this dead weight I had been carrying around... don't give up!

Most of Israel's Jewish citizens are indeed Ashkenazi (white) Jews, but the fact of the matter is this injustice is NOT about "Jews vs Arabs," or a "religious war," or whatever else western propaganda would have you believe. Or the taxation system in Ancient Egypt. You had MULTIPLE options to pay them whether it was through farming, medicine, or building a pyramid for the pharaoh which most chose that because of the excellent health system they got (Pharaohs did not want their tombs to be half asses so they had healers/medics around to make sure the people who got injured for the best care so as not to stop the building or the process. )

I know it's hard to believe it but it's just the simple truth. and I don't want to say it's human nature cause it's not, it's just years of prejudice and arrogance and pride and refusal to change. And these stories will continue to happen tragically till the day we die.

As a disabled person who lives well below the poverty line because I rely in SSI, the MAiD laws in Canada are absolutely infuriating. If those people could've afforded to stay alive, they would be alive. They talked about how they wanted to live but had no other choice because they were too poor to live. Yes I think it should be available to people who are terminally ill, just because something can't be cured doesn't mean they're better off dead. We need better support so we can live. I live off of $861 a month, $170 0f which are taken for healthcare. It's forced poverty, and it is killing us.

My mother was on a disability, even when she got better and could do small amounts of work they would cap her at an extra 500 then take it away from her disability check. She needed to stay on disability because she was schizophrenic and her medication cost over 900 a month and there was no other way she could afford it on her own, even with me working and trying to go to school. When you are stuck in a rut like that for years and years I can see why eventually you give up because no one acknowledges your struggle and there is no way out. I did my best for my mother, she did not take her own life, but I could still see how taxing life was on her. I think the only reason she stayed with me as long as she did was because she loved me and my happiness was much more important to her then her own. So I'm very conflicted on if this is a good thing or not. I would never have wanted my mother to take her own life, but I understand why people feel that way.

This is the tragic dark side of any state health system. Sooner or later someone has to put a dollar amount on life, and say "No, you are too expensive." Maybe that is an acceptable trade off, maybe not. I can't imagine how soul crushing it must be to have to make those decisions.

@Christopher_Gibbons
@Christopher_Gibbons 2 года назад
@@rolandkloka partially true. Just like US hospitals immediate threats are required to be treated. However, the Commonwealth Fund funds long term care separatly, and the extent of care to be given is determined by the social court. All outpatient procedures are regulated and funded as long term care. Private health insurance is available, but what that money is used for is governed by the Chamber of Physicians. (Long term care is again separate and gets complicated) You cannot simply buy treatments a la cart. What all this means is Germany has a very efficient, reliable medical system, but it offers what it offers. If you want something else you are SOL. In the US everything is available for the right price. You cannot have both carefree security and freedom. High risk high reward has always been what this country has to offer. I understand that is not what everyone wants, but nobody is forced to live here.

As a Canadian on provincial disability a lot of us who are considering or have considered suicide don’t want to die. With support we could live full and functional lives, but our government doesn’t care if we can’t afford to live. During the pandemic they decided that the bare minimum anyone could survive on was $2000 a month and that’s what they gave out for the COVID benefit for those who weren’t able to work, but no provincial disability comes anywhere close to that and probably never will. I live in British Columbia and the portion of my disability I’m supposed to designate to housing is $375. Rooms in any metro area go between $800-$1000 and we’re not able to try and find somewhere cheaper because we need to be close to our doctors and have access to transit because there’s no way you can live on disability and afford a car. It can also be incredibly hard to get any kind of mental health services, even if you’re actively suicidal. Most people criticizing the new MAID guidelines aren’t upset they’re being opened to more people, they’re upset that people are being forced into taking their lives because they can’t get the help they need that could otherwise save their life.

As a disabled Canadian, I wanted to weigh in on the discussion around MAID. My great-grandmother died slowly and very very painfully of an incurable illness in the 1980s. I absolutely support MAID because of her and her experiences. That being said, I do feel like in practice it can be used to essentially euthanize the poor. I myself am disabled for sure, and doctors have told me that there is no way to know what condition I have and that there is no way to fix it. I know for a fact that there are plenty of tests that have not yet been run. I also struggle with mental illness and thus know how subpar the mental health support available can be. As well, disability payments are incredibly hard to receive and are pitifully low. Disabled Canadians have known for a while that situations would come up where people would be eligible for MAID, but would choose to live if there were adequate supports available. The way I see it, MAID is a vital part of a healthy healthcare system. But so is financial government assistance, better social programs, improved and affordable mental healthcare, pharmacare, and so much more. Canada has good things in our current system, but we need to stop being content having just a "better system than the U.S.".

I think it’s important to know that euthanasia and assisted suicide are very different things and shouldn’t really be used interchangeably. Being from the Netherlands (where euthanasia has been legal under specific circumstances since 2002) it’s also very interesting to see how Canada goes about it. Adding specific diseases which are eligible, rather than setting up general criteria which could apply regardless of specific medical conditions seems a little strange… But people requesting euthanasia because they are stuck in poor living conditions is horrifying

I'm with you, but maybe don't describe yourself as a "major supporter of euthanasia. It's sad, I've known families who have had to tacitly help family members end their life. And keep in mind, I'm in America, so that means renting a hotel room. Ingesting street drugs en masse because, American, no insurance, Drug War on all by the wealthy making pharmaceuticals impossible. And just hoping they did it correctly and aren't in extreme agony, or now become a bill they can't afford. There are some documentaries on RU-vid I've seen too. Poor kid had an illness that made him feel excruciating pain at all times. Imagine how much you have to suffer before your parents, who without question love you, are willing to help you end your own life in such a way. Because that's where they were. That's Medieval America still is. They said they lived every day waiting for the call they knew was coming, and their only request was to let him do it with dignity and with loved ones around.

I don't understand why so many people ask Phil to cover the off-beat celeb drama. It's he-said/she-said bs amplified because they have a media outlet to broadcast it. I'm mildly familiar with some of them, but for the most part I still don't understand what was done outside of being overdramatic and over-reactive to a miscommunicated comment? Or something? I just think it's anti-content to talk smack over whatever's going on between you and another peer from a narrow perspective. Why is it announced in an audience rather than handled maturely amongst themselves? It just makes them all seem so immature on all sides. But then again...I'm not their audience. I guess if I was their audience I would care more about them as a person and push for 'live' updates...which then continues to push the wheel as those update are considered the next 'they said THIS about you...' to the other person. I just see a lot of negative value for all involved.

I’m fairly sure it’s not that people are asking him to cover celeb drama-news; it’s more that he chooses to prioritize it because it results in the most consistent viewership and works the best for the RU-vid algorithm. Ironically, he’s just catering to our trash tastes (since we choose to keep watching) based on his channel metrics. The easiest proof that that’s how he operates is the “punch you in the throat” gag that went on for far too long. Edit: I should emphasize that it’s not criticism, it’s just the reality of large channels on this platform.
