WEIRD How to train your Dragon RIPOFF? Dragon Rider (2021)

In this video I'll be taking a look at the upcoming animated feature titled Dragon Rider, or in German Drachenreiter, which is a 2020 German movie about a wild dragon that forms a bond with a human boy.
What's particularly interesting about this movie is that it shares many similarities with How to train your Dragon by Dreamworks animation.
Thanks for watching! 💖

@Silver WillowWing Not so fun fact: While Cressida Cowell liked the HTTYD movies, Cornelia Funke doesn't like the adaptation of her book. The characters are very different from the book, and she even outright stated that people shouldn't go in exspecting a proper adaptation of her book. Which is a shame, because the book is actually very good! It had charming characters, exciting adventures and a really interesting lore and world. This is what she had to say about the movie on her own site. "DRAGONRIDER made its appearance as a movie a few days ago, but you’ll notice that the credits say something like "inspired by/based on motives of the book by Cornelia Funke." I tried my best to convince the team that adapted my book for the big screen to tell the story you all know from my book, but alas, they decided to tell a quite different one. Some of the characters were changed immensely and are not really the ones I sent on a journey to the Rim of Heaven. Constantin Film 2020Firedrake for sure feels more like a pet than my wild and wondrous dragon. Ben is not the selfless and fearless boy who dreams of riding dragons and was always hero material. I definitely know that the famous dragon expert Subeida Galib doesn’t have a husband and if she had chosen a companion, she for sure wouldn’t have picked a caricature. (I apologize to all my Indian readers for the character, although I didn’t come of with it!) As for Nettlebrand….. well, I am sure the ones who will watch the movie will agree that he is not the monster I described. And then there is the show down (is it a showdown? ) and …… I will stop here, as you all have to make up your own minds, whether you like the story I told better or the one the director and Constantin decided to tell. Maybe you’ll enjoy the movie nevertheless. Just don’t expect it to be an adaptation of my book. It’s very different. " This...is not a good sign, when the original author doesn't seem that fond of the movie.

It’s sad because I really love that book, and kinda always wanted a movie adaptation. But not like this, where it’s so different the author dislikes it. The book as-is would’ve made a great movie! And seeing the characters designed like in the illustrations but with shiny silver and gold scales would’ve been amazing
@entropy178
@entropy178 3 года назад
Well, same trouble with book adaptations all the time. If you say it's "based on" or "inspired by" this raises expectations. Which, honestly, how can they be met in a 90 min screen play? They can't, because books take way longer to establish the characters and story. So maybe you shouldn't say that. But then, wouldn't it be unfair to not credit the original author? You can't do that either, because sooner or later people would draw the similarities themselves and be furious about the bad rip off. So I guess, the best thing we can do as audience is to acknowledge that "inspired by" means that previously there has been a similar story, but the movie must be allowed to stand alone as a piece of art by itself.

Yeah they butchered the movie so much, cut out so many parts and characters and the replaced them with cliche side plots that ruined the whole idea of the original.

(Sorry piggybacking on your comment to get more attention) I just want to say that the book this movie is meant to be based off is not a rip off of how to train your dragon, the book is very good and I’m actually re-reading it, even from the trailer the movie is scraping most of the important element from the book and I know that the movie said it was based off the book not making the book into a movie but it looks awful. So please check out the book and don’t let the movie make you think that dragon rider is a bad story Edited the grammar

I have to say, I'm disappointed. Not in the fact that this video claims to rip off a different movie, (although that does appear to be somewhat true, if only slightly) I'm disappointed in the cheap and lazy design they gave the characters in the Drachenreiter movie. I think the main dragon is cute(?), I saw the trailer a while back, but then you showed the cover art of the book and saw how much better it COULD have looked... and didn't. They watered down such a beautiful design into something too silly and hard to take seriously. My goodness, the book design reminds me of a Clockbirds painting. Why does the Drachenreiter movie look like a rip-off of the Drachenreiter books? It doesn't even make sense.

That book was amazing. And they absolutely massacred it. They turned a whimsical, heartfelt fantasy novel into a cartoony corporate money grabber. They did my boy Firedrake dirty, and Nettlebrand was not made of gray metal :( he was actually intimidating (And I believe this book did inspire HTTYD!!)
@narwhalsyrena4668
@narwhalsyrena4668 3 года назад
I can actually answer a few things about the movie and book. The main three characters are: Firedrake, one of the silver dragons; Sorrel, the anthro creature, a brownie and Firedrake's first companion The brownies are a bit like caretakers of the dragons. (they love mushrooms btw); and Ben, an orphan human boy that gets picked up from a warehouse in a human city. Considering how early on they meet, that's hardly a spoiler. As for that giant gold dragon thing, his name is Nettlebrand the Golden One (loves to keep his scales polished) and he hunts and eats silver dragons. The book is very much worth the read, but it's mildly upsetting how the trailer for the movie is so reminiscent to HTTYD, given how vastly different the two worlds really are. Including the fact that Dragon Rider is from a modern era while HTTYD is from the viking era.

I respect everyone here and Silver, but like. The only real "rip-off" part of the movie is the poster reference to HTTYD in the trailer(?). You can't really claim a font or color, nor can you claim a gliding animation or pose on posters or etc. I think calling this a "rip-off" was some bit of click-bait. Nothing was really described or shown here to claim that they are trying to "rip-off" HTTYD. References aren't ripping off a company, or fame/popularity.

I remember reading Drachenreiter as a kid. Great book and when I watched how to train your dragon I saw a few similarities between the movie and the book. But HTTYD is the dragon franchise and as a german I'm ashamed of this trailer and the movie which is not even out (correction, it IS already out in germany, but I was so uninterested in it that I didn't know. Maybe I should watch it, but I don't really want to...) It may be not as bad as I fear it will, but with this title we will expect something worthy like how to train your dragon, and it will not meet these requirements. The dragons look... well... not my liking and many things are obviously stolen or badly copied from HTTYD. A dragon eating armoured lizard? A female speaking fox? Come on... really? The level of films seems to have dropped a lot... That are my thoughts about the movie. Greetings from Germany :)

The fox lady is a brownie, I think. I’m kind of nervous since the book is different from the How to Train Your Dragon series for a lot of reasons. The book also feels more mature than the trailer seems to be, and the metal dragon in the book was ginormous compared to the one in the trailer. To be fair that would be a pain to animate, lol.

Too bad they didn't let the author herself help them with the movie. The djin with a thousand eyes is supposed to be blue not red. Firedrake is the Dragon's name and nettle brand, the goldan one was not bigger than I pictured, and yes he eats silver dragons.

The book dragon rider (Drachenreiter) is much older than the whole httyd movie/series universe (I'm not sure, if the books are older) The original story of Drachenreiter is stunningly beautiful, with the same magic of Harry Potter and the same passion as httyd. Having read the book myself I personally think that they are just trying to remind people of httyd while watching the trailer. All the stuff in the trailer seems extremely book accurate and in the book the resemblance to how to train your dragon stops at the fact that there is an outcast boy riding a dragon. However I feel like this movie will sadly dumb down the book based on some of the diolouge from the trailer.

As someone who has read the book it is simular to the books in the basic plot but not so much in details and characters. For an example in the book Ben doesn't even *want* to be the dragon ride, every time he is referred to as such he is clearly uncomfortable and doesn't even stay with the dragons when the reach the rim on heaven, instead choosing to live a normal life with his new family. In the movie (trailer at least), however, he *desperatly* wants to be the dragon rider, I'm not even sure if it is so much of him wanting to be a dragon rider as it is the actual reincarnation of *The* dragon rider all in all is is very sad to see such a beloved book to many disrepected like this for money

I have actually read the book and if its the same Story as the book than it wont be like HTTYD (by the way the fox creature is a sort of troll or smt) i havent watched the Film jet but i will soon The actual Villan of the book wants to eat the dragons but the reason is because a human needed some sort of Material from the Moonlight dragons Aka the dragon specias And to get that Material he build a mechanical Dragon that hunts them But one day the Moonlight dragons disapeard so the Mechanical dragon ATE the creator and still searches dragons up until now ofc (Moonlight dragons are most Powerful Wenn theres a full moon BUT wenn there is no moon they cant fly or attack atleast in the book)

this not a ripoff. just because a movie has dragons and a dragon riding person does not mean it is a ripoff of httyd. the characters and plot are totally different. the only reference to httyd is the "how to tame your dragon" poster in the trailer.

Even if it has similarities theres no way the book can be a knock off.. this book is from 1997, way before the How to train your dragon franchise. I can definitely see how the movie is using heavy inspiration.

I read the Dragon Rider book when I was younger. It is a great story and I am glad a movie is being made. However like you Silver I am concerned at how some of the design and marketing seems to copy that of How to Train Your Dragon.

The movie may be a rip off but the actual book Dragon Rider was published in 1997 (before httyd even came out) by Cornelia Funke, the book is an amazing read. The movie is a flaming hot pile of garbage and I want to obliterate it. It is NOTHING at all like the book(s). Keep that in mind

If you want how to train your dragon back you can also just say so 😑 your only comparing the tho films together wich makes this one look like a blow off. Like how good the graphics look and who knows how good the story is. I personally also want how to train your dragon back but I’m not gonna compare the 2 films together because then every film can look like a blow off. Though there is one thing I can agree on and that is the dragon designs. They look so normal. I loved how the dragon designs in how to train your dragon all looked original and really cool with all kinds of own abilities to survive in that world. In this movie it’s just normal dragons that randomly popped in the world started to grow and then found humans and then for some reason needed to hide even though they can pretty easily over power them.

They're gonna do the same thing with Wings of Fire, aren't they? I won't be surprised if it's just an adaptation of Dragonslayer, the worst book in the series, just because it's the easiest book you can make an HTTYD rip off out of.

It actually isn't from HTTYD... When I watched this at first, I was like: 'Oh, okay.' But a few of the names seemed rather familiar. 'Rim of heaven', 'silver dragon', 'metal-something'... And then I realised it was names from a book I used to love reading. I watched the trailer again, and remembered that many of the characters seemed like what they were describes as in the book. It's NOT a HTTYD film, it's anything BUT it. The villain (metal-something) eats silver dragons to regain his strength, and ate his creator many years previous. Firedrake is supposed to be the last silver dragon alive based on the first part of the book, but then set out to find the Rim of Heaven where the rest of the silver dragons are maybe hiding. The fox-hybrid thing is actually a brownie. A lot of the things in the trailer are actually in the book. For the nature and font of the movie? I don't know. Maybe the creators teamed up with HTTYD producers, or something like that. I don't think the movie is a copy, I think that they are just acknowledging the HTTYD community, and maybe sponsoring them for some reason??? Don't hate the movie because it looks similar, watch the movie first, then decide. Thats just my opinion. Nice analysis though!

I READ the book back then and I can say that there is almost nothing incommon with Httyd in it. But as Silver pointed, the movie is not a copy of the book, it's just INSPIRED by it. And that is where we can clearly see all the simmilarities. I personally really enjoyed the book, so I'm looking forward too see the movie but as Silver already said - trailer is definitely in Httyd-style so I hope the movie won't be...

Not really,dragon rider is a book that got released in 1997 and the how to train your dragon book is released in 2003 which i think how to train your dragon copied the dragon rider book and then how to train your dragon haves a new movie after that dragon rider copies how to train your dragon by making the movie too and making as simillar as possible.

I feel this will blow up in their faces. If you are creating something very similar to something successful, you'll create a lot of ire with fans. It appears they are trying piggy back on HTTYD success. I might be tempted to watch it, as I love dragons and there aren't that many dragon related movies.

It isn’t supposed to be a HTTYD rip off. It’s got it’s own book and lore (which I much prefer to the HTTYD books, because it’s an older book). But- they’re making wrong and so it looks exactly like a HTTYD rip off... with Dr. Suess-esque art.

Reminds me of some of the cheap animated knockoffs you see on I Hate Everything. Stuff that's completely unrelated to a particular popular movie but through marketing and the DVD cover (and being a few bucks cheaper than the actual movie on Amazon) manages to trick people who aren't really paying attention into thinking it's the real deal.

It's funny like I don't think they will make any money off that "dragon riders" movie well more like our beloved How to train you dragon, and the way they so blantinly copied our favorite dragon movies? I don't think they Really care that the movie was good or giving credit where it's needed they more so care about the fact of because how Successful how to train tour dragon was they thought if they had a simular idea it would get them money. Which that really Won't help what you look for in movies that are completely new are ideas that haven't realky been seen before! It helps So much better with marketing and more. I hope sombody who read this feels the same way.

I'm sorry but have you even read the book? I do agree that this movie is a lot different to the book and has a lot worse character designs. But the boy (who is NOT an actor but a homeless boy whose parents DIED! He has to STEAL to survive! ) is called the dragon rider in the book. And yes, in the movie they connect this a lot to httyd and I don't really like that myselfe. And yes the golden non-dragon called Nesselbrand eats dragons. And there is a reason behind this! The movie doesn't talk about the history of the book at all. The alchemists of the middle age tried to create gold and one of them found out that you can make gold from silver dragons. But since they are hard to find and to kill he creates Nesselbrand to do the dirty work. Turned out bad for him cause he got eaten. Anyway in the movie non of this is described and Nesselbrand is just some random monster that eats dragon for no reason.

my apologies this got long and turned into a bit of a ramble toward the end there. but I love the HTTYD film franchise and the Dragon Rider books (okay I'm just a lover of stories with dragons and if there are no dragons I will add them... even if the book is a romance set in the modern world... thank the last dragon chronicles for giving me a aid in that thought process) 1. somehow HTTYD did a better adaption of Firedrake then the actual film 2. HTTYD books came out in 2003(ish) and Dragon Rider is (loosely) based on the book of the same name by Cornelia Funke that came out in 1997 3. the author of Dragon Rider is not happy with it (somebody else posted her comment about it but I'm going to put it here as well) Thursday, 8 October, 2020 DRAGONRIDER made its appearance as a movie a few days ago, but you’ll notice that the credits say something like "inspired by/based on motives of the book by Cornelia Funke." I tried my best to convince the team that adapted my book for the big screen to tell the story you all know from my book, but alas, they decided to tell a quite different one. Some of the characters were changed immensely and are not really the ones I sent on a journey to the Rim of Heaven. Firedrake for sure feels more like a pet than my wild and wondrous dragon. Therefore: "based on…" 4. the brown furry thing is called a Brownie 5. the metal monster we see a little bit of is Nettlebrand and he was built to hunt dragons (Firedrake and the rest) I came to the conclusion with the similar title font and other comparisons to HTTYD the makers for DR probably saw the success of HTTYD and attempted to piggyback but it really didn't work (unless people watch it without watching the trailer first) like they should have kept it at that just saying if you loved HTTYD you'll love this because who doesn't want more stories of dragons and riders? this animation doesn't work for this story at all- if you know the DR book you'll know what I mean like holy cow is this animation style too young for it (still waiting on a proper Eragon adaption guys) I'm probably going to watch it but will probably just end up dragging it to hell and back
