I've been going to the Jersey Shore my who life but I've never visited Keansburg before. When I went there I found that the place had weird vibes and liminal spaces. Join me as I see some abandoned buildings, strange murals, an eerie amusement park, and more!

My grandparents went on their first date here in the late 50s. Keansburg was a big time destination at one point. The big change was once the Garden State Parkway opened, people opted for south jersey beaches.

Went to Keansburg all the time as a kid especially during the 90s. It was always kind of a dump, but it was our dump.

i grew up there and used to tell people i lived in Hazlet, so they did not judge me. I have been out KB for over 20 years and it is still in my heart. I feel guilty all those years, I denied where I was from. I miss the people and you ae right it was our dump. Keansburger for life!!

Even by the 60’s that whole strip of Rt 36 was sketchy. Laurence Harbor down to Highlands. We used to call those towns along the Raritan Bay as Where Debris Meets the Sea 😂 We definitely slummed it going to the Burg in the 80’s. I’m long gone from Monmouth Co. & here they tried jazzing it up with the ferries to NYC. Lots of townhouse communities. Still not sitting on that “beach” 😂

I'm a native of East Keansburg lived there for 5 years from my birth in Dec 1982 until we left in Nov 1987. My family lived on 161 Ocean Ave for 14 years beginning in 1973. I visited Keansburg recently and I barely recognized the town anymore compared to the 80s. Special shoutout to my fellow Keansburg native John Fenner.

Reminds me of a September day in 1960 (the only time I ever ventured into Keansburg), right after Hurricane Donna wrecked that amusement area and plenty more. We scrambled around all over everything while my friend's Dad drank at a nearby bar with a six foot water line inside across the street. What a day!

Back in the early 60's we used to go there "family trip"....all I really remember is the bumper cars and tons of horseshoe crabs on beach!

My husband and I went down there last summer. It was very busy, pretty clean, it just seemed a little outdated, but very nostalgic.

When a town works for "vacationers" instead of the people of the town, the town dies.. "Vacationers" go home.. residents do not! Take care of your town, and the tourist will come! I am from the Jersey shore and am totally saddened that it has gone to the dumps.. so sad.. Thanks for this video.. Reminds me of why I left Jersey..

Very interesting video. My father, now gone, often talked about going down to Keansburg as a child (we lived in Irvington). He talked about going out to the beach at night where people had campfires and tents and would camp out on the beach in the summer. It must have been magical at the time as it was among his fondest memories of the shore.

I grew up near Morristown, NJ and there were commercials on TV all summer long for Keansburg Amusement Park. ***edit: back in the late 1960's , early 1970's

We are staying in Keansburg right now for the 4th of July. Got in last night walked our dog over to the beach. Immediately two policemen in a golf cart told us dogs are not allowed on the beach. Ok. Walked this morning around the scary amusement park. I felt like I was in a Scooby Doo set. Probably leaving early and driving back home.

Visiting here and roaming the streets for arcades was fun when I was a kid. Sad to see how it turned out. Hopefully they can bring it back up to speed.

Sandy was so bad here there were go carts from the boardwalk about 20 blocks into town it was crazy. That’s why all stores are like that, they couldn’t afford to fix them and nobody ever bought them to fix up. Same with houses a lot of people had to just leave and couldn’t afford the repairs. A lot of stuff being torn down and built up lately though

Carr Ave was struggling and then Sandy wiped it out. 70s and early 80s were great times as a kid there. I think the neighborhood is coming back but slowly.

Grew up in Keansburg. Those shots of buildings on Carr Avenue bring back memories. I lived right near the laundromat. The police station moved to a different location further up Carr Ave awhile back. Haven't been there in awhile, I'll have to go there on my next trip to NJ

i live in kb myself and and after seing it in another persons perspective its really odd how liminal it is, evreything is either broken or "being fixed" but the people here still make it work. i think the town is slowly dieing and the community just dosent want to except it so they keep trying to put new things in it to make up for it.

Smack in the middle of the Jersey shoreline. Looks like a place with a lot of potential. Part of the Bayshore regional strategic plan. Gonna put it on my place to visit list.

My mom took my cousins and I there many times in the mid 1960s through the early 70s. It was a sad little Ma and Pa amusement park. We lived in South River and Sayreville , so the ride was short. A lot fewer cars and traffic back then. Knsbg was really a poor mans place, but it dangerous. We loved it. The games and concessions were low priced, but fun. The hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza...etc...were good. It did not have a real boardwalk, as it was level with the town. I mentioned the word SAD before,...but it was a good kind of sad. Another commenter said it was THEIR place. We felt the same.

Spent most of my Childhood Summers there. Believe it or not, the amusement park originally had a real Boardwalk. I remember it well. It may have been destroyed by an earlier Hurricane

I grew up in the "Burg". It was an interesting and eclectic place. The decline started long before sandy. And slow going since. Improvements are coming. I still have family there so I visit often. I look forward to seeing progress. You might look into the mural project. Ty for sharing

Agreed. I’m from port Monmouth and keansburg was a rough area since I was a little kid. They say they’re trying to get better but it still has ways to go

We used to go to Keansburg every Saturday night when I was a kid, never any trouble. All the arcades and stands were open on the streets than when I had kids I brought my kids there, haven't been there in years. Not sure how it is now but always a good time back in the day. Sad to see that all the Jersey shores are changing.

When I put my granddaughter on the rides 5 years ago, that made four generations going on the rides dating back to the late 40s. my grandchildren enjoy it. plenty of history in that town. my family had summer homes built there in the early 20s and my grandparents had their home built there in the mid 50s. people do dump on keansburg but its truly a special place for me. there is a four part video on keansburg on youtube, black and white...if your from the bayshore, look it up and enjoy!

The lines you see in those abandoned buildings are the watermarks from Superstorm Sandy. It completely destroyed this side of town, bumper cars and Arcade machines were floating down Carr Ave.

Funny you mentioned Asbury. I went there a lot as a kid in the 80's and it reminded me of that too. The slum by the sea. It has been revitalized since.

@@RayOutThere Yeah it was something else. I ran into Bruce Springsteen filming the tunnel of love video on the boardwalk. It was just on the Ocean Grove side on a gloomy ,cold and deserted fall day. Other than that it was like an open air mental asylum.

Went there a couple times pre-Covid. Water park across the street is cool. Amusement park is definitely for a younger crowd, but the go kart track is nice. Town, and amusement park specifically, was hit hard by Sandy.

Means burg is on Hudson Bay. On a clear day you can see NYC, Verizanno Narrown Bridge, and Brooklyn about 40 miles away.

@@RayOutThere I'm the manager of the Haunted Manor in your video and we just pulled it out of Keansburg in order for it to be relocated to Florida. The Spook House that is mentioned in the comment above was sadly destroyed by Sandy and despite years of promising to bring it back, it is NOT being rebuilt.

Keansburg was always run down and had a reputation, but the boardwalk used to be really fun. It's a shame to see it like this.

It’s not a dump no more, well it doesn’t look like one at least. They renovating Every abandoned field and house in the town. Also Creating new commercial and apartment condos. The crime is mediocre as it isn’t a major problem but it happens. If you walked down seabreeze u would’ve saw a house with like 30 bullet holes in it no joke. And that apartment building isn’t luxury no more as they couldn’t find buyers so now it’s section 8 and low income units and smells like weed and urine inside. The town has a long way to go but it isn’t changing in my opinion I think it’s getting worse

I remember being five at the amusement park . I looked around at all of the freaks and knew that these were not my people . That was in the 70’s . Has not changed a bit . Glad my mom moved us out of there . I only had to go to kindergarten there

Keansburg NJ is part of what's considered "The Bay Shore", it's really not considered part of "The Jersey Shore", which actually starts at Sandy Hook. Growing up in Brooklyn during the 1960s and 1970s, they would play commercials for Keansburg Amusement Park, which were kind of outdated and creepy. My family would always spend weekends in the summer anywhere on the shore from Asbury Park down to Seaside Heights. We never went to Keansburg. But, after seeing the commercials, I begged my parents to take us there. Well we did go, and honestly, even back then it wasn't very nice and we stayed a bit and left. You should try to find some of the old commercials on You tube.

That’s so funny, the moment I saw this video up, that song came into my head. They altered the commercials a little into the 80’s (adding narration), but they /always/ kept that weird song with that guys voice that sounded like he was singing through a comb with tissue paper on it. Thanks for being someone else who remembered that. Also, yes, those commercials are available here.

Keansburg was always know as a trashy town . I can't see that town ever being successful. It will never come close to other shore towns. Like you said it's just a trashy feel . Your on the Raritan Bay

Keansburg is a dump and it's always been a dump. When I was a kid, my family would go there at least once every summer, this was the late 90's/early 00's and even back then the town was rundown with low-class people, the park was outdated, the beach was filthy. We went there simply because it was closer than going to Pt. Pleasant or Seaside and it was an easy day out on the weekend.

Keansburg was always a butt of joke as we got older . Going to the board walk and playing tht Kung Fu video game at the arcade and the weird horse show crabs all over the beach that washed up .

Used to go here a lot with my dad and my brother, I remember the amazing food they had, especially the pizza and burgers. The Moby dick used to scare me, not even the ride itself, but the mural on it 😂😂
