Square Enix, the makers of the 'Final Fantasy' game asked me to make a sword from the upcoming XVI release to be displayed in the Tower of London Armouries - how cool is that!?!
Matt Easton from Schola Gladiatoria and I get together sometimes to talk about weird weapons and this is certainly one of those, so I wrapped it up and handed it over for the big reveal. Then we talk about it seriously; how it was made, historical parallels and whatever else that comes to mind.

@@kaoskronostyche9939 My guess is that it would run into trouble over the sheer length of it, most Rapier blades are pretty big already in that 100 to 130cm length and at least partially sharpened for cutting. So it would be a matter of keeping the weight down on what's already a pretty big old sword, then because its long it'll also need quite a bit of strength too. Quite a complicated bit of engineering, course if it just a prop or something you can get away with less of that as someone's not going to be battling for their life with it :)

And that is why I totally stay away from buying any of those fantasy weapons, even if I am in some degree a fantasy fan. 6.55 almost Matt, almost :D There is a legitimate barbell exercise called the Land Mine Press and is meant to target and isolate one side of the pectorals that looks very much like this. You basically get a barbell, stick one (weight plate free) end up against the corner of the wall, make sure the other end is loaded with a weight plate and start pressing away before switching sides. Now there's an idea, medieval themed gym equipment? Anyone? Anyone? What do you all mean, "Nay"?

As a Final Fantasy fanboy I have to first say "Bravo Zulu". Job, incredibly well done. Second, in the video you said "If they have a material as strong as Steel but as light as Aluminium it would be perfect". The answer is the common (Fantasy) metal known as "Mithril" (spelling varies slightly but that's the most common I've seen) also known as "Moon Silver" in some places. Generally in Fantasy settings this stuff is considered pretty high up there in terms of a crafting material and anything better is typically reserved for Legendary tier equipment. Thus if (In Universe of course) the blade was made put of Mithril I would say that it would likely weigh only 10-12 pounds as since you're going after really tough monsters you would want the blade to at least have a solid core.
@nordoceltic7225
@nordoceltic7225 Год назад
I think Matt actually makes a fantastic point about a weapon made for slaying gigantic creatures. It does actually beg the thought of the kind of of sword-like weapon a person might turn to when they are fighting a creature larger than an elephant. And I think a heavy, very large sword like this might actually be a sane choice. Thing is, any big creature is going to be tough, which THICK skin, well over in inch think. Even animals like bison have hides so thick it can be a challenge to get even bullets deep enough to kill, forcing hunters to pick high caliber rounds and place their shots into vitals to get a kill. So in turn the standard sidearm sword we see in history is actually a DEFENSIVE weapon, designed for parrying and blocking and out-maneuvering the equal defense of a equally fragile and easy to kill human while blocking his strikes that are no stronger than yours effectively. When your adversary can flip a truck with its big tusks/horns, or rake claws though even thick wooden doors, etc, defense is not going to be an option. Its going to be ALL about dodging attacks then having the insane chopping power to deliver punishing blows though monster's natural armor of thick hide and/or scales. Its also about having the kind of chopping power to deliver cuts that slice FEET deep into the body of the massive beast being fought. After all if its the size of a small house, a few inches deep of a typical sword cut is not going to strike something vital like it would a human.

It almost looks like the blade is actually the scabbard which would be pretty awesome imagine someone walking towards you carrying that and then pulling the sword from the scabbard and effectively having 2 swords although the scabbard wouldn't have a handle and would be hard to use.

Think the Italian Cinquedea sword would sometimes have a hallow parts at the base, so they could make it extra wide and add more art

That’s really awesome, after watching all your amazing historical videos to then mix it up with final fantasy - fantastic. Thanks for the entertainment! 😊

that's look great for a purple rarity but look like you need to be super build to wield it.

There are several aluminum alloys as strong as many common steels. 7068 T6 aluminum is a ordnance alloy probably best for structural parts components. Tungsten carbide is a super heavy material that can bought affordably as scrap end mills. GL HF

On the topic of working with imitation materials versus real materials: I am not a person who is overly concerned with details when it comes to movies. If there's some set dressing or a prop that's out of place I'll ignore that because I just don't feel the need to nitpick. But something like a sword, even if it's just a millisecond or two, bending like rubber; my brain catches on to that immediately and I spend the rest of the scene, episode, movie; whatever; just looking for more magical steel that bends as if it's a cheap Hollywood prop. What I believe intellectually has nothing to do with it; my subconscious is highly concerned with how that solid steel buckle hit the ground as if it was plastic. My subconscious is perfectly fine believing that a glazed cup is 20 000 years old, but not that it is made of glass.
