In the head-to-head, the Tama, Canopus and British Archer were the best to me. The Archer is a visually beautiful drum. It seems like everything British Drums Company makes is. The head-to head parts of these videos are the best. Another great video from DCP.

One thing I noticed on the soft cedar was the fundamental note is less noticeable with more overtone volume and less volume in general. The dense Purple Heart has more volume, and fundamental note. Cedar is one of the softest woods I’ve worked with, you can poke it with your finger nail and your nail will dig all the way into it so easily like balsa wood. Do it to Hickory and it won’t even leave a scratch no matter how hard you try. The soft wood acts as a vibrational dampener, absorbing the energy from the heads moving. I’m not hating on it though, all the snares have their time and place.

Another great video of some amazing instruments! Just a quick note to say that along with the quality production values you folks always bring to the table while making these awesome videos, I really love that you include some humor(!) in them too!! Let's go smell some snare drums! :)

What Tama is doing here is introducing the Japanese cedar as a "premium" wood when it's just a normal, plentiful soft wood. It allows them to use it on their lower end drums, but show to buyers that they think of it as a higher end wood by making a $1300 snare out of it. I doubt anyone buys that Tama snare especially at that price. It sounds pretty good on the recording, but it's really hard to tell if it really holds up against a hardwood kit. I have my doubts about it, though, it does look really nice.

I had a purpleheart DW and I traded it for a 10+6 maple. I could not get it tuned correctly no matter what I did. Don't know if it was out of round or what but the 10+6 blew it out of the water. Dunnett sounded amazing to my ear! Thanks guys

While they all sound great, the Purple Heart kick and floor tom are the star of the show. To split the difference of those hating or accepting the piano black finish hiding the Purple Hearts' looks, how about a fat stripe in the piano black that shows off that purple goodness!

They all sound great, but for me it's very close between the Dunnett Milkwood, the British Drum Company Archer, and the Pearl Stavecraft. I tend to prefer shallow snare drums tuned on the higher side. Thanks for another great video! Now I know some other drums to check out on my next visit!

I thought they all sounded great, but the Archer from BDC, and the DW purple heart were my choices, as my ears heard them today. Visually, I think DW should not have covered the shell with black laquer, or at least, had accents of that beautiful purple heart wood showing. Anyway, great video guys, love the head to heads, the humour, Adams presentation and Tonys playing. Look forward to your next instalment.

Pearl sounded choked like all thicker shells do. I like how the video ends with “financing available” since these snares are the same price as a decent drum set. In the head 2 head portion, they all pretty much sound the same. IMO, these boutique snares are more about looks and bling.

Love that Purpleheart DW snare, looks great and sounds even better as far as I'm concerned! Has a really nice articulation of a metal snare drum, but retains that warmness associated with wood shells. Per usual, all the snares featured are well worth anyone's time and money, so it's all a matter of taste at the end of the day.

Great review als always...i'm kinda lookin for a wood snare drum that doesn't have a lot of crack and is not like in your face and violently loud. In small clubs the snare (and cymbals) are always the problem and bleeding into the singers mic. Any recomandations for a snare drum like that...or at least a wood type? Would be nice...

I remember thinking a while back, what would a cedar drum sound like? And now I know. Just hope it’s durable :/ But between that from Tama, and the Archer from Brit Co, you guys really nailed a whole lot of exotic sounds.
@krusher74
@krusher74 9 месяцев назад
You would not really know what a cedar drum sounded like unless they did a head to head of exactly the same drums with differant shells, I would think most of the sound differance you hear is the differant heads, lugs/hoops and snare wires more than the wood. I bet the bearing edges makes more sound difference than the actual wood. But music cmpanies love selling expensive products on "exotic" wood.

I am still favoring the Noble and Cooley Walnut from Staff Picks a couple videos ago. I've listened to a lot of these comparison vids. I really don't think it makes much difference how much you pay or what wood you get etc. Pretty much any snare can get you by if used right. That's all the other instruments too. Tone=Inspiration, If it works for you then that's all that matters. Nevertheless, keep making the vids, I'll keep watching, appreciate ya.

I’m 40. And I still think a snare sounds like a snare. I have 22 snares in my collection. And there’s no huge difference to me in how they sound. 😂 stainless, aluminum, maple, mahogany, birch, vintage, new,,,,, so many different sizes. They all sound similar. Not the same. But tuning is the main difference. And either some metal or wood. I’m probably gonna get crucified here for this. But. That’s my opinion

And I find the purple heart to be too metallic (you pointed that out). If I want metal, I'd play metal. If I want woody I want it to be woody.... BDC is right in the middle of the pack. Great video.
