For anyone wondering how ice was kept cold before freezers, ice would be harvested in the winter (or summer depending in where they lived) and stored in stone rooms beneath the ground where it would be cold enough to stay frozen through out the summer (or winter).

But my grandpa did this because he lived in the mountains and couldn't use those what he would do if find a small cave that led no where and he would build a wood structure to cover the opening and fill the cave with saw dust and gaint blocks of ice to keep his food cool during the summer in the mountains. This moment in the video reminded me of that and just wanted to share

the video about santur you saw was from Iran. children still learn this musical instrument. I have a friend who plays santur. we mainly hear santur music in classical music. it has a really calming sound and you usually don't get bored of listening to it. that traditional calculator still exists in Iran and it is used to store the numbers in an easier way, so your concentration goes fully on calculating. I think you should do a sidemen video about that mathematical board.

I think the counting tables were necessary because back then, the numbers system weren't established yet. They knew an amount for what it is, which is an amount. The beads, based on their position, represent an amount of something. But now an amount can be easily represented by numbers. If you didn't have numbers, counting or calculating large values would probably be extremely hard because you're only working with amounts, not knowing what it looks like. So the beads made it easier because they represent the amounts. Just like how a number goes up with value, the beads on a counting tablet shift according to its value. The beads also have an advantage of being universally understood, whereas numbers could be represented differently in different languages.

I remember growing up with Abacus classes in India and my parents debating whether I’m actually gonna learn something or not. I never went there. Now I wonder what life wouldve been with abacus.

I had to use one of those counting boards when I started learning maths as well, I'm from Sweden though, so, very much not 'the East' haha. But I HATED it, I never quite figured out how to use it. It blew my mind that so many of my classmates found it easy 😂 we only had a few of them though and they were sort of passed around during the week, so you'd have it for like 1 or 2 classes/week.

In Australia I live in the red dust heat (middle of no where at the time) but there is an old abandoned ice factory in the Main Street of town. Only a few places were allowed allowed to run off the towns generators and they cooled the rooms by electricity or the open picture theatres and stuff like that.
