This is our first time at a Dutch McDonald's! There are specialty items that are only served in the Netherlands and we wanted to try those out today. We also wanted to see how similar or different some of the staples are compared to our home countries, Germany and the USA. What are your thoughts on McDonald's?

1:26 in the Netherlands actually MacDonalds tells us that saus is as American as it can get. U can buy it in the grocery stores as American fry saus. Like why doe's MacDonalds serf it. All my life i just wanted mayonaise by my fries not some fake American saus, that everyone thinks is typically American but is actually dutch MacDonalds not American. If your truly dutch u wont eat MacDonalds fries anyways. Cause their basically trash compered to Dutch or belguim fries. Edit: i think MacDonald fry's is what gets served in the Germanic hell.

Vla kinda sucks Dutchies...Sorry to say. BUT as desert is not high on your list (more popular now as tastes move on with generations.) I see many more desert options in the stores. Ice creams, candy and specialty deserts, custards, cakes (taarts) ect.

The frites sauce is sold in grocery stores here in the Netherlands as American sauce😂 I always thought as a child that this was the sauce Americans eat with their burgers and fries.

Please go to a regular Dutch cafetaria. You'll be amazed by all the good fried stuff you can get there. There's more to explore than just kroket and burgers when it comes to fried food 😉😋👍🏼

As a Dutchie my favourite used to be the stroopwafel mcflurry, but I think it’s been over a decade since they served that one. Also, sometimes during the wintertime they have deep-fried prawns with chili sauce, it’s so good!

Just a reminder for a recommendation: For Dutch streetfood, you have to try Hema rookworst. It's a smoked sausage and you can find it at the store HEMA. It's very delicious and flavorful. Just make sure you buy them 'cooked' ( or cook them at home).

Haha, the cherry tomatoes usually come with a Happy Meal. You can pick between cherry tomatoes or apple slices. these particulair ones are also called snoeptomaatjes (candy tomatoes) because they're sweet and easy snack on (snoepen is a verb similar to snacking in Dutch), not because they're candied.

@@JesterMoes oh, I’m not, but for something to count as vegan it has to be prepared in a different fryer than stuff with animal products. Separate pans, separate fryers, separate grills… otherwise it’ll inevitably contain traces of meat. It works the same as with nut free or dairy free products basically

The chicken big Mac was on for a limited time a few weeks a go in the UK . So they may move it around to different EU countrys so there's no sort supply probs

if that chocomel only has 48kcal per 100ml it's not the original chocomel, you got the "0% sugar edition" in that bottle, which has skimmed milk + artificial sweeteners. it should have 87kcal per 100ml. which makes 870kcal per liter. it's extremely rich in calories but so good.

I live in Haarlem, the Netherlands. The Mc kroket is really my favorite burger. When I eat McDonald's, I always order a McDonald's mc kroket. Soooo delicious. and besides the kroket, I think the big tasty is also the tastiest hamburger.

hey phil, the vla is indeed very much thicker. that is because it is commonly eaten as desert. mostly put in a bowl and eaten with a spoon. but drinking the vla is indeed very handy as well if you like it.

Dutchie here, McKroket is a pretty solid pick for me. Its not my go-to, as the big tasty is just way better, but the mckroket is definitely one I like and order from time to time

The funny part is we call that fritessauce "American Frites Sauce" to differentiate it from conventional mayonnaise. I think we call it that, because it's specifically popularised by McD's

Fun fact...donut or in the early years in the usa where called: Dutch doughnuts, is a dutch product brought to the usa (about the year 1622). they placed a nut in the middle of the fried dough and then called the dough-nut.

I never eat a Mckroket as a Dutchie. I do occassionally eat fried stuff like a kroket or frikandel, but we mostly fry them at home because it's so expensive to buy them at a cafetaria. The cherry tomatoes are on the menu because McDonalds has a 'healthier' kid menu and so they sell these items also seperate. So you can get small carrots, apple slices and cherry tomatoes in a lil bag. They also offer a choice for a toy or a small book when you get a kid menu. Since children don't read as much anymore as they should.

Yes, McDonalds burgers are very dry ☹ Which is ironic cause they used the have the reputation of being very soggy like 10/20 years ago. My guess is that changed when they switched from plastic to paper/cardboard containers for their burgers. The steam from the burgers used to be trapped in the plastic and got absorbed by the bun, but now it's absorbed by the paper.

I liked the old Styrofoam(?) packaging much better. The cardboard is pure crap. And nowadays basically everything at McDonald's is made out of cardboard it seems.

It is lack of fat and salt which make burger very dry. I think most people know that if they eat at MD it's not going to be healthy, so why destroy the taste.

@@cactusthomas914 I'm fairly sure the burger patties are still roughly the same as 20 years ago. I used to work at McDonald's and when calibrating the grills we had to taste-test the patties without any of the condiments. So I've had plenty 😅 The patties were never the reason for the soggy buns 😉

I'm a Dutchy and actually like the McKroket once and a while. The single Big Tasty is my favorite burger from Mc Donalds too. And I love the fritessaus 😊 I start everyday with a nice cup of hot chocomel (instead of coffee) I always have the one with no added sugar 🥰

I (Dutchie) eat fried food mostly on weekends as a snack. I stay away from the McKroket because it just doesn’t compete to the real thing. We have a farmers market every weekend in the city centre, and I really love to get some fresh fried white coalfish (Kibbeling) or a fresh made stroopwafel. I used to “pull food from the wall” as we call it here, but these are usually lukewarm at best and I like my fried food piping hot. Big Tasty is absolutely my favorite from the ‘Maccie’

As a Dutch I definitely don’t eat the mckroket…it sucks (although my mom likes it so I guess it does appeal to some). I much prefer an actual kroket on a regular bun (wit puntje) with mustard. I’m with Deana…chocomel is 10/10!

8:30 I've never been a big fan of McDonalds to begin with but I love the Dutch saying "Schoenmaker blijf bij je leest." (basically meaning stick to what you do well). So at McDonalds I just buy a Big Mac and I'd get a broodje kroket at a normal snackbar ;)

The cheese on the Big Tasty burger in the Netherlands is actually German emental cheese. They also used to have this in German McDonalds, but they changed it to cheddar cheese a few years ago.

Big Tasy used to be exactly the same as in Germany but with the white emmentaler cheese instead of cheddar/american. But they now just use one or two QP patties instead. The Netherlands simplified Mc Donalds a lot and I prefer German or French Mc Donald's lots over ours.

@@NOOBAR84it all comes down with the 'Made for You'-method they implemented. They had to simplify in something to reduce waste and make it simpler. Here the 'Made for You' can be actually quick. In Germany they do it also nowadays and a long service time isn't uncommon.

I think (looking at the comments) that im in the monority saying that i order a mckroket everytime i go to mcdonalds. I just really like the easyness of the burger and i think the sauce in combination with the juiceness of the kroket is really good. No big uneatable burgers for me, just a simple mckroket seals the deal for me😍

Here in the US we had the Big N Tasty which was McDonalds version of the Whopper. The sauce on this European version looks different, the US one was just ketchup and mayo. McDonalds discontinued it here after a couple years, though. I'm not sure why they serve them in boxes though, when they come wrapped in paper it's easy to fold back the paper which means less mess for eating in a car or while walking down the street.

Interesting background info. Don't know about the dutch version but the german version of the Big Tasty has a very smoky sauce which is the highlight of the burger. Really like it from time to time. Another favourite of mine is the McRip. Pretty sure it was a thing in the States too but for some reason it also disappeared.

Policy of McDonald's to put premium burgers in boxes and cheap ones in wrappers. At least here in Holland. Maybe they should do both for the big tasty

@@amossutandiJupp, they should do both for all bigger burgers. The boxes are great to put your fries and sauce in, which always annoys me at BurgerKing, where I never knew where to put my mayo. Only for that reason I now carry some small plastic cups in my car. But I have to clean them at home afterwards, which shouldn't be necessary when dealing with fast food.

Frites sauce is kind of a dutch interpretation of what we imagine a kind of hybrid mayonnaise/ranch to be like. It's typically marketed as 'American sauce'.

As a Dutch person, I don't really care for a kroket or a McKroket. But my best friend always orders a McKroket if she gets the chance. She says it's the only thing at the McDonalds that she likes, next to the Chicken Nuggets. Another weird thing she does is eating the Chicken Nuggets with the frites sauce

As a Dutch I only ever get McChicken from McDonalds or chicken nuggets (or ice cream for that matter, lol). There's better food to find at cafeterias or snackbars :) Love your videos! Btw the 'snoeptomaatjes' were added because McD had a campaign with 'healthier' food choices, generally they can be added to a happy meal or smt.

@@daytona1212 Agreed, everything is junk there. The McChicken and McNuggets are the worst junk they have though. Dry and quite flavourless. When I want fast-food chain chicken I'll sooner go to KFC. At McDonald's I think I like the Big Tasty with bacon best. But of course, as always, to each his own :)

In my youth (1970s) I regularly went to the Mac in Amsterdam in Reguliersbreestraat (the first Mac in Amsterdam) and I easily ate 3 Big Macs in a row. But as I got older (I'm 64 now) I actually never go to McDonalds anymore. That McKroket is a very bad version of a traditional Dutch "broodje kroket". And Chocomel, yes, that's what I grew up with :-) Aan those burgers, well, what can you say about that? There are many hamburger shops in the Netherlands where you can buy a much better quality hamburger. And finally: those McDonalds fries are just bad and that mayonnaise is really inedible. Go for real Dutch fries with a tasty sauce :-)

Never like McD. Dutch snackbar is always beter. The McD fries are mwah and the sauce is horrible. And the buns are soft and soggy. They used to have good coffee, but most petrolstations have coffee that is the same or better. No need to stop at McD.

Fun fact about the McKroket. When they introduced McDonald in The Netherlands in 1971 they added it along with split pea soup to give Dutch people familiar options.

I'm a Dutchy and I actually love the McKroket, and im obsessed with the big tasty! The fritessaus is my favorite sauce ever, as a kid my grandpa always made us fresh fries and we would always go to the store to buy the frites sauce. In the netherlands it is sold as american sauce so as a kid I always thought it was really populair in america😂😂😂

McDonalds always is a safe bet. The McKroket is nice, but why would you eat this if any random cafetaria has a 'broodje kroket' which is undeniably better than McDonalds? The McKroket became more of a novelty tourist thing. It was popular when it came out though. btw you are on spot with the big tasty. It's too messy so I order mine without tomato. If you like peanut butter, Calvé is the brand to go

There must be different menu’s in different places I think. Where I live in the Netherlands you can get a homestyled chickenburger and that one has the good chickenmeat (like the tenders) on them. You can also have the chili chicken burger f.e. overhere. And they have the chicken wrap as well. I must say that I don’t like the McKroket or the fish burger. By the way….this yellow fritesaus is called American Fritesaus overhere.

The white Big Tasty cheese is a cheese called "emmentaler". Its a young cheese which imo is a little flavourless, but it does melt easy

As a Dutch person I absolutely love the McKroket but I might be biased because a kroket sandwich from any place is great. It’s definitely a sandwich I have every time I visit McDonalds! In Amsterdam you can find the food halls and they have a foodstal called ‘’De Ballenbar’ which literally translates to ‘ball bar’, they sell gourmet bitterballen - which is the rond snack size version of kroketten. They have multiple fillings like cheese, mushroom, shrimp and of course the good old beef. I really recommend visiting

The McKroket is in my personal opinion the best burger the McDonalds has together with the Big Tasty. To bad the higher ups thought it was a good choice to take the McKroket off shelves and replace it with a 100% plant based version now. The taste is good, but you definitely miss the beef, and the texture is different too. So tons of people are actually very upset over this choice. I hope the original comes back soon!!

i had a brief glitch while refreshing RU-vid on my pc and thought for a moment that this was a collab with My Name is Andong. He is another great food RU-vidr (based in Berlin) with an emphasis on cooking but still goes out to just eat sometimes. Maybe you could reach out. I don't have any clear idea where a collab could lead but that's the beauty of it.

McKroket! Kinda reminds me of some fried mashed potato balls I had in Indonesia (that Dutch influence) I always tell ppl that going to McDonald’s anywhere in the world is a ‘safe’ way of figuring out a different country’s food; it’ll be somewhat authentic with the flavour profiles but unlikely to be overly offensive or give you food poisoning! McDonald’s across Asia gives you various flavours of fried chicken and different kinds of chilli sauces, rice dishes, local inspired McFlurry flavours like with palm sugar and grass jelly.

some comments from a dutchie, the cherry tomatoes are a desert in the happy meal, to promote healthy eating habits for kids i guess? i have never seen anyone order them alone xD. The chicken big mac is a limited edition item, so it isnt a standard item on the menu. atm they also have a limited edition veggie mckroket! as a vegetarian retired mckroket fan, i was rly happy when they announced it :)))

The Cherry tomatoes are for the kids mostly. When you order the Happy Mean, you can choose for Cherry tomatoes or slices of apples for them in it together with fries, a burger and some toys.

Dutch mcdonald's enployee here, The mc kroket gets ordered quite a lot, i would say around 1 in 6 orders has atleast 1 mckroket. Right now the mckroket is temporarily vegan as an experiment, but still it gets ordered quite a lot

There are so many Dutch things better to try, like Dudok Apple Pie, Kwekkeboom or Van Dobben Kroketten (or more artisinal versions)...even a Nierbroodje and I haven't even seen you guys visit Febo. There's not much weird at a Dutch McD, in France you'll find weirder stuff. A McKroket is rather iconic now. Same for Fristi or the real Chocomel, not thr skinny versions. Btw a much better challenge: go to Quick in Belgium, the Belgian McD.

Van Dobben are literally the most overrated kroket there is. Very little meat in the filling and a major flavour of bouillon powder. Even the cheaper krokets of the former 'Euroshopper' were miles better, looking at meat content. Kwekkeboom is good though.

When you're next in the Nether;lands and visit a McDonalds, try the vegetarian McNuggets. I'm not a vegetarian but I think they taste so much better than the regular McNuggets. Also I wonder ; didn't you want to try the McFish ?

I really wish we had vegeterian mcnuggets in Austria. We have the burgers. But McNuggets would just be great. The Burger King ones aren't so great, but I think that the vegetarian ones anywhere always have a much better texture than the regular ones.

I don't actually know that many Dutch people that go to the McDonalds. It's mostly tourists or immigrants (that is also why they don't serve it with mayonaisse but with the other weird sauce). Cafetaria/snackbar fries and other snack stuff are far superior (and cheaper) than anything McDonalds has.

Worst thing about the McKroket, when they first started with it, I think you could get one for € 1,50 if memory serves. A few years ago they did the "Elfstedentocht"-burgers which were interesting too!

I never eat at McDonald's, but I used to work there. The cheese on the Big Tasty is supposed to be emmental. At least, that's what McDonald's calls it here. Also, it underwent quite some shrinkage, it used to be a lot bigger. A croquette is deep fried ragout. And even though the Netherlands is credited for this, the croquette, as the name suggests, actually originates from France. They do get ordered but aren't a particularly popular menu item. I heard they now switched to a meatless alternative.

I'm from the USA but while staying in Garmisch I stopped in for lunch... Three things I noticed are, the place was cleaner, the food was fresher and it didn't have that "no one knows what" smell that McDonald's seem to all have in the States...Love your content, take care.

I Actually have the McKroket as a side order with a menu some times. Or I get it with a cheeseburger and a Coke as lunch. At the moment of me writing this, McDonald's retired the beef McKroket for a plant-based version. And I belief it's a good swap, the plant-based McKroket tastes verry good. It's more like a vegetable ragout filling.

Frietsaus is mayonaise with less than 75% oil. In this case combined with herbs 2. The Dutch loved there mckroket, there was a huge protest when McDonald's discontinued it in the early 2000

tbh as someone who worked at mcdonald's for 2 years, often times the icecream machines arent actually broken, ppl just can't be bothered to clean and refill them, which doesn't even take that long, but it can be annoying if you have other stuff to do aswell

Hi Phil, Vla isn't something you drink usually.. It's a dessert like pudding. Combined with a little bit of 'Ranja' (Siroop) it's very nice! Also very nice combined with Cherries packaged in a glass pot.

Chocomel is just a brandname (in belgium it's cecemel. But we now use chocomel as a synonym for chocolate milk 😊

Mckroket is a mac branded broodje kroket which excisted long before mc made them. ( veal kroket on a bun with mustard)

It's been a while since i've eaten at a Dutch McDonalds, and even longer ago at a German McDonalds, but I seem to remember they had 'pommes frites sauce' back then. It was the same sauce they sell at the dutch McDonalds as 'fritessaus'. Also, in Belgium, they used to have a choice between 'fritessaus' and 'real' Belgian mayonaise. idk if that is still the case. Fun fact: you can buy the McDonalds fritessaus in supermarkets. It is sold as 'American fritessaus'. The best known brand is 'Mad Sauce'. It tastes exactly the same as the McDonalds fritessaus, so I guess the company that makes the McDonalds sauce also makes the Mad Sauce. There are also store brands that have 'american fritessaus', but those do not taste exactly the same as the McDonalds sauce.

Its called “snoeptomaatjes” which means “candy tomatoes” but it is not candy. Its called like that because in The Netherlands we eat it as a snack (or as candy) we also have “snoep komkommer (cucumber)” and “snoep paprika” Btw, we don’t order them as a dessert in the Netherlands. It is mostly sold in a happy meal.

When my mom was my age she went to mcdonalds with my grandma. And my granma wasnt familiar with american fast food chains she thought is was a regular snackbar. So she ordered a regular kroket. (This was early 90's the mckroket wasn't introduced then)
