Recorded on February 25th through the 27th along the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad trackage from Cumberland to Frostburg, Maryland.
Engines:
WMSR 1309 H-6 Mallet 2-6-6-2 (Ex-C&O built 1949)
PNLX 7471 SD40 (Ex-WM Built 1966)
PNLX 7436 SD35 (Ex-WM Built 1964)
Trains Magazine hosted a photo charter event to welcome back the return of the last Baldwin built steam locomotive, C&O 1309, now as WMSR 1309. During this 3 day event WMSR 1309 would not only haul freight cars, but on the first day pulled the excited guests up to Frostburg to get a sample of what to expect for the next two days.
On Saturday and Sunday, 1309 put on quit a show pulling an 11 car freight train. Various runby shots were taken in various locations along the WMSR rails between Cumberland and Frostburg, including the famous Helmstetter's Curve, City Junction, Coal Tipple, and Gardners Meadow. All the while 1309 climbs the historic Western Maryland's mountainous grade towards Frostburg.
However, on the 3rd day, after arriving in Frostburg, PNLX 7471, had some issues and delayed us for a while. Costing us some filming locations and rushing us for the final location, Helmstetter's at sunset. And, with seconds of light remaining, 1309 rolled past perfectly on time helping close this amazing 3 day event!

NS need to smell the coffee look what CSX an UP have done to bring back big steam power. NS needs to allow 611 and 1218 back to the main line.

CSX only helped deliver 1309 to the WMSR, WMSR did all the work to restore 1309 and only runs 1309 on WMSR trackage. CSX is still anti-steam, sadly.

@@BTCRAILFILMS CSX is not anti-steam, they donate a lot to see steam run again. 2716 was lettered up as CSX for its move to Ravenna, a shop location donated to the restoration effort by CSX, and CSX used the engine’s mainline trip for quite a bit of PR. 2716 also has plans to run over CSX trackage once it’s restoration is completed. They moved 1309 to be restored as you said, a move which they donated, not to mention helped the WMSR during the pandemic by giving them revenue freight. They moved 567 to be restored aswell. I seem to recall 765 has done a few runs on CSX’s mainline too. The only real example of them being “anti-steam” was their refusal to let 614 haul the Greenbrier Express which was actually a decision spearheaded by Amtrak, but even then they had valid reasons to doubt the ability of 614’s crews to act responsibly.

@@CaptainCrutch ahhh actually forgot CSX threw some cash at those restorations. I always think of the 614 but yeah makes sense since the crew was speeding

This old girl seems to still need a bit more valve gear work. She's still leaking alot and is running so out of square. Being a compound you only get the exhaust beats of the low pressure cylinders so it will sound like a normal 2 cylinder loco unlike big Boy or 1218 when each engine went out of sink they will sound like a double header. Hopefully they address the issues soon but at thankfully she's C&O and running. Love the C&O hooter as well.

The WMSR is still fine tuning 1309. Between the Polar Express and this event they had done some work. And yeah I love that hooter whistle too!

The few leaks still present will be cured by just running in, a few packing just haven’t worn in quite yet. But actually the engine sounding out of square is just a result of being a compound of this size. When running in simple it sounds perfectly in time much like 1218.

Canon Vixia HF G50. A very nice camcorder that does HD at 60fps and 4K at 30fps. Also using the Canon DM-100 stereo shotgun mic

Such a small tender for the "BIG-GUY"...I'm assuming she is single or dual stoker equipped, (as I obviously know NOTHING about her) Her exhaust is exactly "squared" and an excellent job on by re-producing her to the "nth-digree". One final note and per the above, I wasn't aware that W/M ran these locomotives or were affiliated with the C&O. If not, wouldn't it be "nice" to put her original livery back on her tender...(but I'm "fly-specking) here O.K.?

So the WM did have big engines, 2-6-6-2s, 4-6-6-4s, and 2-8-8-2s. However 1309 is a C&O engine, but 1309 would work mountainous routes like this, so 1309 isnt out of place on the WMSR trackage

1309 has a single stoker. As for the WM and C&O being affiliated, they were both adopted into the Chessie System which is now CSX. However, she will likely be returned to her original livery for photo charters which ask for it. Otherwise, she operates on Western Maryland rails, by the Western Maryland (scenic), so a Western Maryland engine she will be painted as in regular service.

I seem to remember that a properly fired boiler, marine or train, will produce a "thin, brown, haze" from the stack except when under heavy loads. Why is this loco producing so much steam from the stack. Is it just for the photo opportunity?

This is how a locomotive should be fired. The stack should really be nothing but steam, while still loading in enough coal to keep up pressure. It’s a careful balance between the stoker, blower, and draft. The times that she is running pretty dark is only for photos.

Is it just my imagination or do I hear camera shutters clicking in the background? Since Kodak went out of business years ago, it would be interesting to know that they still have film on the shelves, but who processes this stuff? ANYBODY KNOW???

I think there were 2 cameras at this event that used film. One was a retro instant Polaroid and another was a very old folding style camera. What you're hearing is an army of DSLR cameras firing off in the background

DSLR's have shutters? (Being a former professional photographer who used Kodak 35mm and 2&1/4" format film why, and/or how stupid am I? (Sumpin's not correct here, especially with the Polaroid). Your thoughts?

@@1chuck96 DSLR, or a digital single-lens reflex, makes that clicking sound from the motion of the mirror assembly inside the camera moving to allow the sensor to capture the image and then moving back into place. And I wouldn't say you're stupid, but I'd say you're a bit behind with what everyone else has, but even then, camera makers are moving towards mirrorless cameras (DSLM) which are slimmer, lighter, and less complex having no need for the complex mirror layout inside the DSLR, and DSLMs can even allow for real-time viewing of the subject to help set exposure and focusing compared to DSLRs
