Thanks also for the memories. Came over the Copeland Pass in early 70s and was delighted to reach the old Welcome Flat hut which was very small and rudimentary at the time. So good to relive that experience through your vid.
The Copeland holds a special place in my tramping life. In August 1973 I spent three weeks on a geology field trip in this valley - exploring side creeks and high rock exposures. It was my first trip to the South Island and I recall being completely unprepared mentally for the scale and challenge of these valleys once you leave the track. A vax triggered autoimmune condition - myasthenia gravis - means its unlikely ever get to visit these places again, so videos like this bring a real sense of gratitude and calm. It's astonishing how the body remembers these experiences - they come flooding back from 50 years ago and become real in the moment. Thank you.
Hey mate thats cool, I would love to stay in there for 3 weeks, the hut warden was telling me about a thunder storm they recently had in there, he said it was incredible the sounds of thunder around the valley, and the lighting constantly flashing, I wish I was there to see that, Thanks for your comment, glad to see that it brings back fond memorys for you👍👍
Great effort mrs Carter!! Been there a few years ago in mid winter with some mates it’s a big walk big country funny story: I got up early to head out for a hunt 2 very attractive Canadian ladies walked past from the bunk area totally starkers heading for the pools …. Me mouth wide open with porridge falling off me spoon My mates were sound asleep and missed the show ( the girls would have walked right past them) I made sure I rubbed it in -as they say: the early worm catches the bird
@@nzmeateater yeah you’re not wrong mate heaps when we went in Saw some thar on tops across from the ruera river confluence had a go but chickened out That dude you met is a mean machine Did get a 10” chammy buck just up Archcitect creek on that trip Will take my missus up there those pools are awesome

Hey Mr Carter, hear them whistling frogs did -jah. Appreciate the extra time you spend setting up those camera shots for us. Mrs Carter did well too. Cheers.
That's some spectacular scenery mates. Way to go carrying Jiabs pack for her for a wee bit there's no way I'd be able to carry that let alone walk that. Awesome job team❤❤
Gday Callum, yep its a special place, different than the north in all most every way, we love it down there, have a house on the west coast which hopefully we will move to in the near future.
Cheers Fred another memory lane used to shoot chamois across the river from this hut in the 90s mobs of 20 plus Often stopped in Douglas hut and crossed over the divide once to have a look down towards the hermitage but walked back out to the coast.
Cool mission bro we spent new years off 99/2000 in there my older brother was a hut warden in there for a few years shot many a good bull thar and chamois in there ..there was a 10.5 inch buck living around that bridge by the hut my brother shot him the day after I saw it..jammy bugger lol
It’s a beautiful tramp that one. In fact we did a bunch of tramps all up the West Coast a few years back. I prefer staying in the older huts myself 😜😜 Bit of a leg stretcher for the boss aye🤪🤪
Hey bro been following you for a couple years on different accounts. One of the best! Wanting to do bit of what you do. Live at foothills of Urewera! What editing gear do you use? Cheers Tony
Thanks Tony, I use the "video pad video editor" program, It does all I want to do. Theres a few diffrent ones around, You will have to pay a little bit for some of them.
Awesome thanks for the reply. Maybe we could colab once ive got this editing sorted. I own the Whirinaki forest lodge in Te Whaiti. Looking forward to your next adventure. @@nzmeateater
Next time I go in there I will take a gun, but na didnt see any,,was just r n r trip with mrs this time. certain times of year you cant get hunting permits because too many people walking in there, safety issue. Theres people on that track almost every day over the warmer months.
I did see that about the closures when i was down that way in Feb. Is it ok to leave your car at the road end? Safe enough? Your missus is a good sport, mine would never talk to me again if I put her through that.@@nzmeateater
