Located off the west coast of County Mayo, Clare Island carries a rich geological, cultural and archaeological history, yet doesn't see many visitors. The island's terrain is punctuated with two large hills, bogs, woodlands and rare Arctic-alpine flora, making Clare an ideal destination for walking. Additionally, the main harbour's sandy beach offers a lovely swimming area, and you can find an impressive number of nestling sea birds along the island’s spectacular cliffs.
Guarding the entrance to Clew Bay, Clare Island was the former home and a stronghold of Chieftain Granuaile (Grace) O'Malley of the 16th century for several decades. Her remains are said to be buried in the nearby 12th century Cistercian Abbey, which features some of the finest medieval wall and ceiling paintings in Ireland - well worth a visit! The O'Malley clan and residents of Clare Island are working towards restoring the castle and developing an interpretive centre to preserve and share the heritage of the O'Malley clan.
While hiking and exploring, keep an eye out for some of the many archeological ruins on the island - from Iron Age huts and burnt mounds, to Bronze Age promontory forts and a 5,000 year-old court cairn. The historic Clare Island Lighthouse, established in 1806, sits perched atop the craggy cliffs of the north end and overlooks the entrance to Clew Bay. It’s always a fun stop on our guided hikes; and the beautiful adjoining luxury hotel can be added to a self-drive or custom hiking tour. A passenger ferry runs from Roonagh Quay, west of Louisburgh (20-min crossing).
