A traditional Aboriginal blessing, the Welcome to Country symbolises the traditional owners' consent to an event taking place on their land.
Professor Simon Forrest, a Wadjuk Nyungar man and Curtin's Elder-in-Residence, explains the ritual as he performs a 'smoking ceremony'.
A Welcome to Country is performed at all major events at Curtin, acknowledging the Nyungar people as the traditional owners of the land upon which the university sits.

I'm Eastern Cherokee from the Southeastern USA, we use tobacco and cedar for a very similar traditional ceremony :) Great to see traditions around the world and to learn about them.
