@Fibrescapes ~ Thank you for sharing your story with us Shelley. Your high school art teacher sounds wonderful....Only an artist understands the best way to ignite a student's individual creativity is to encourage its development organically, through unfettered exploration. I've always been drawn to Impressionism and Expressionism style paintings, so when I saw the video "thumbnail" of your artwork, I was immediately inspired! I love the texture, dimension, and movement the yarn gives your pieces Shelley! I've played some with needle felting 2D and 3D pieces with wool, silk and a variety of fibers, as well as punch needling yarn on monks cloth, linen, and canvas. However, after watching your videos, I'm completely intrigued and would love to try it myself! I already have a large stash of yarn just begging to be used! I saw a comment you made on the question of what type of glue your used, "Acrylic Gel Medium". Can I ask, which "body level" and "finish level" acrylic gel medium do you find works best for creating your pieces? (ie: Soft, Regular, Heavy or Extra Heavy body gels; and Matte, Semi-Gloss, or Gloss Finish) Is there one or two brands you prefer over others? I would absolutely love to dip my toes into this amazing style of art, so any guidance you could provide about the specifics of the acrylic gel mediums would be deeply appreciated Shelley! Thank you again for sharing your talent and knowledge with us! ~~Christy~~

Hello Christy, thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! I use the regular gel medium in matte, but gloss produces an interesting effect also. I prefer not to mention a brand. I've used two, and they both worked fine. Thanks a lot for your support. This medium is so satisfying to work with. I wish you all the best as you continue your explorations in art! 💛

I'm sold! I am teaching a yarn painting class at my job in the library starting next week. I was just looking for some inspiration and ran across your video. I'm overwhelmed. Looking forward to translating pictures I've been collecting into yarn. This fits in perfectly with all of the fiber art disciplines I am involved in. Thanks. I hope to be able to share some of my work with you soon.

I am so happy to know this! Wonderful! I'll post a video of another artist shortly who works at this differently. You may like to see that too. Best wishes for your class! Thanks so much for your comment and support. 💗

Just found you ... omg! Your paintings are amazing! And yes, I think yarn painting is a great term for it. In the art world, one of the biggest questions is, 'What is a painting?' The one thing that most artists agree on is that a painting is not the medium. It's a very personal question, I think. The answer is different for each person. I'm an illustrator. My medium is acrylic paint. Or at least it was. Sadly I had an accident a few years ago and broke my thumb on my painting hand and can no longer hold my brushes in the way I need to do my work. I've been struggling to find a new way to create my work. The past number of months I've been exploring fabric arts and painting with cloth. Which is how I've stumbled onto your work. I grew up crocheting with my mom while watching movies. I'd never thought about yarn in terms of paintings. You've inspired me to explore what I could do with it in combination of the cloth works I'm doing now. Thank you so much for sharing your work. This could be a game changer for me =)

I’ve been working with free form stitching and one day I was scrolling on RU-vid and came across a video on yarn painting and thought I would try a small abstract piece and I was hooked! I’m inspired by your work and thinking about doing a Picasso style piece next.

So happy to have found you, l have been playing with yarn on a canvas picked up at a thrift shop and managed to create a yarn mandala. l loved it and proudly takes centre stage on my wall. Finding artists that use this medium is rare. the silver lining though is that l have to think for myself and see where it takes me. Love your art and your pin board is a perfect solution , l will be trying it very soon .

You've got to do some tutorials! Videos on the type of materials you use or the type of glue/bottles. I tried a small piece at an art class at the library and I love going one after the other with the lines! Though I'm not skilled enough to recreate items with proper colors. I would love to try bold objects with simple colors. I was just looking for some direction or inspiration of things so I don't have to draw much but just simply find things I like and fill it in with yarn but I was surprised to find there's not much out there! I'm glad I found you.

Thanks for your kind words and support! Sorry for the delay.. busy times! I'm happy that you enjoy this medium too. I find the yarn really inspiring in itself. Playing around with it will definitely teach you a lot. You will learn what types of yarns you prefer (I like wool and acrylic), their weights, colour ranges, textures, etc. So much is based on preference. Regarding tools... You can start really simple, as I did, with white glue, a bit of cardboard to use as a spreader, and any poke-tool to push yarns into place (pencil, wooden skewer, whatever). As the support, I work on wood, which is cradled for painting. I've seen others work on cardboard, and of course, you can try out any other ideas you may have. There are other ways of working, too. If you check out my community tab, you will see a link to a tutorial by Annie Greene. Her working method is very different from my own, and lends itself better to following an image that you can transfer onto your working surface (so you can draw less, or not at all). I hope this helps! Have fun with your explorations! 🤓💛

I wish there were a way to add the word "yarn" to your title. When i looked up yarn I couldn't find you. When i found you with the word fiber a whole new dimension opened up! I love watching the process! I think many more people interested in yarn may be missing you!

You are a true artist. Amazing! You're water colors are gorgeous. Keep doing that too. Would love to see more of them. Do you teach on you tube art with yarn for beginners? We could try doing small pieces to start out with until we get the hang of it. I want to congratulate you. I would pay to go see an exhibition of yours. Stunning

Thanks a lot for your kind words, Claudia! I do enjoy making pieces that include water views, so they will definitely continue. I have not prepared a RU-vid course. I truly believe that "discovery follows exploration", as I note in each video. Yarn is such an approachable art medium, and the tools needed are so simple. There are no rules to follow. In my videos, I do show how I work, and share some of my thoughts and challenges. I believe there is enough info in there to help you get started. I'd rather inspire you to try the medium for yourself, than to offer a course in which we all produce the same image. Let me know if I can be of help with any of your specific questions. If you look at my Community tab, there is a video by Annie Greene, in which she describes her method for painting with yarn that she taught in schools. It's different from my own, and definitely worth a peek. Ultimately, I feel that if we just allow ourselves the freedom to explore, without the pressure of creating any particular outcome, we can enjoy the process, and even progress in our 'mastery' of the medium. Thanks again for your support!

Thank you! I felt an instant appreciation and affection for you, your work and your kitty :) I've been watching a lot of slow stitching videos and one of yours popped up. I've been a fibre artist for years but I had never considered painting with yarn! I'm feeling intrigued and excited although a little overwhelmed at some of the process involved. I also love your idea for storing you're yarns. We have a very small living space with very little storage and A LOT of materials. My husband would also love this idea!

Thank you so much for sharing your story- and in such a calm, encouraging manner! I have been surprised/discouraged by the number of artists who want to keep their techniques a secret. I find that such a shame - everyone’s creativity and talent puts a different spin on a technique. Sharing the basic bones how-tos is such a gift to others who might be struggling to simply get started. Even if I were to copy one of your masterpieces yarn snippet by yarn snippet, the two creations most certainly would finish entirely differently. Again, thank you for sharing!

What a beautiful journey of painting with yarn. I love using yarn in my fabric abstract landscapes. Mostly for couching and trim. I'm inspired by your videoes to try a small painting with strictly yarn and give my landscapes a more realistic look. Thank you so much so sharing your ideas and art.

I love your art pieces. I totally get where you are coming from. I was bored one day and simple said out loud. I need something to do. I heard my inner voice said, "yarn Art". I tried it and I am loving it. I made many pieces and give them away to family and friends. but now I want to take it up a notch. My issue is the glue. I was thinking of the bees wax, but then I see you are using a no drip glue. What glue is it? Or did you add something to your glue. Right now I am using Elmer's glue. Your advice will be greatly appreciated. I call my artform Yarn Painting, because you do have to create it first then add the color which is the yarn. Thank you so much for sharing.

Yes! Yarn painting.. that's great! I use gel medium as the adhesive. As an artist's medium, it offers the advantage of reliable stability. I started with white glue also, for my first two pieces, but I'm not sure what to expect of it over time... will it affect colours, flake, yellow, etc. Thanks for your comment and support. 🌼

I just found your channel and I am so excited by what you are creating! I am an artist who has struggled with what medium to work with and am currently playing around with "all the things" by lumping it all under mixed media. Paper is my dominate, but I love the idea of incorporating other items and I have a lot of yarn I obtained a couple of years ago that now I am looking at with totally different eyes. Thank you for sharing your work and ideas- I love your storage system- perfect for color inspiration and you can easily see what you need or want. I will have to see if I can figure something similar with paper somehow. Also, storing it on the wall is so great for not taking up much room in your work space! I know you noted you aren't making these videos as instructional, but would you mind saying what adhesive you are using for the yarn and do you do any sort of sealing/protecting of the piece once it is complete?
@fibrescapes1111
@fibrescapes1111 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your support! I use gel medium as an artist's grade adhesive. I have tried a number of sealants, but currently I'm not using anything. I'm glad if this work helps to inspire your own. Storage too! Best wishes!💐
