Welcome to Gen-Z's world of show-off culture, where the desire to flaunt luxury items like iPhones, sneakers, and concert tickets has taken centre stage. A viral video of a boy from a small town in Uttar Pradesh going on a hunger strike for an iPhone reflects a broader trend: even in smaller cities, people crave status symbols. In 2023, 90 lakh iPhones were sold in India, with 60% of sales coming from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. But what is the psychology behind this? Why are so many Gen-Zs now caught in a cycle of spending beyond their means? That is what we shall understand in this video.

This video makes me feel so good about myself compared to the rest of the country's youth. I bought an iphone 2 years ago for 90k because of 3 main reasons: the ecosystem integration with my existing apple devices, the ease of use for someone not into customising their OS and using a lot of apps, and the decent 3-camera setup for its price. But the most important condition was that I COULD AFFORD IT as it was less than my 1 month salary (not bragging), hence I did not give a second thought when I finally decided to buy one after research. I don't understand this craze with showing off in my generation of Indians, this is pulling us back big time as a society too

There nothing to brag my friend. Still iphones cannot be justified for average Indians even earning 2 lakhs per month. In US average salary is 5000 USD and iphones cost around 1/5th of the income. In India guys earning 2 lakhs per month considered to be upper middle class have to pay half their salary

My dad told me he'd buy me the new iPhone as a birthday gift after my exams, even though I know his pension is just 50k per month. I've been in self-doubt for the past few weeks, wondering if I should get a new phone or not. However, spending 20 minutes on your video gave me complete clarity. Edit: For me, it's not about social status or a symbol but, being used to that os. I switched to iOS from a Lumia 520 and used an iPhone 6 until 2020. Then, I got the 12 Mini on my own while working from home and interning for a company-it felt like free money at the time.

My story is the same as the ecosystem guy. Used to hate the notion of having an iPhone, even now I barely give any value to it so 'social validation' wasn't a reason and won't be. But it does make everything work efficiently and smoothly for me, whether attending meetings or getting work done. At the end of the day, purchase something which you believe is truly your need, rather to flaunt and gain fake social status.

Maybe you're right but I think the only difference between Gen Z and the preceding generations is the availability of information. Today we know what the generation indulges in, but we didn't have so many knowledge back in time. And if you do go back in time to see, you would think every generation is doomed relative to their time, but somehow they all end up flourishing. But definitely, the case of Gen Z is quite unique, and we have seen some substantial changes here. So this may be the closest we get to doomed, or maybe we just scrape by and Gen Alpha faces the brunt

Different perspective from another genz here. I bought iPad as my first Apple product with my own scholarship money. First thing I did was to put a non-transparent cover and HIDE THE APPLE LOGO. Nobody in my friend circle know about my ipad except two very close friend. Now why iPad and not any inexpensive Android tablet? For a student iPad is perfectly optimised in every aspect to increase productivity. Also pencil and app ecosystem can hardly be compared with Android tablet.

Lost my phone (Samsung Galaxy) in 2016, which I bought from my 1st salary. it cost me around 8k, which was the most expensive phone for me at that time. it was a very emotional moment for me. I have experienced people have their perception around iphone so wrong firsthand that after a specific budget range, its iphone or nothing. I bought an android recently and a colleague of mine asked about its price and all. Then he goes to say why I didn't get an iphone, it has more "security" and started asking me questions why mine is better. I didn't want to answer him, I just said I have a preference and I went with it. But then he kept pestering me so I told him, iphone has no proper file manager, slow charging, less ram and storage and battery for the price. There are more reasons not to get it, no telephoto lens, no sideloading apps and like few more reason which I didn't even tell him. Another colleague also told me to buy an iphone instead of going with android :/

I really enjoyed the video! The message is so necessary, especially for Gen Z. I wanted to share a little tech journey-after using Android for a while, I recently switched to an iPhone. I was planning to get a Pixel 9, which I thought would be a better option for me as a Spanish writer, but I ended up going with the iPhone because of peer influence from friends and colleagues. I think people should buy phone on a budget that in case if you lost your phone ,you can buy the same phone within 2 days without hampering your monthly budget.

Only a small percent? Bro why do you South Indians hate our country and Hindi so much? 44% of the Indian Population in India speak Hindi. English and Hindi are the main two official languages of India. Barely 2.9% of the Indian population speak Malayalam. What is the reason behind so much hate by South Indians towards other languages? I am from Orissa but I speak Hindi fluently because I wanted to. I am not trying to live inside a pond and form a closed community and cry that I won't speak Hindi. Learn to be a good human being instead of being so self centred and selfish. There are other human beings in the world besides those from South India. It's not too late to change and become a better person. Thank you.

Main 13 saal ki umar se cooking kar raha hu aur mujhe ye kaam bohot pasand hai. Maine decide kar liya hai ki mujhe Chef hi banna hai, chahe kuch bhi ho. Lekin mere parents kehte hai ki bawarchi ban ke kuch nahi hoga, wo chahte the main bhi engineering karu, jaise mere bade bhai. Mere bhai ne mujhe samjhaya aur bola ki apni talent abhi se dikhana shuru karo. Isliye maine 9th me cooking channel shuru kiya, lekin mummy-papa ne mana kar diya aur kaha pehle padhai par dhyaan do. 10th ke baad maine apna naya RU-vid channel "Cooking Beast Ayaz" shuru kiya aur tab se regular videos dal raha hu. Likes aur views kam aate hai, par mujhe apni skill dikhana hai kyunki cooking mere liye sabse zyada zaruri hai. Wjk

I too deleted Instagram and Facebook (yes I still use it) from my phone, and tbh my screentime and attention span have improved, not dramatically, but still by a decent amount from when I had these apps on my phone. But the most important effect I feel is when my friends discuss some memes or trends, and I don't have any clue about them. This would've made me feel left out earlier, but now I just feel "Wow, I saved so much of my time and effort by doing literally anything else other than doomscrolling"
