Back in the early 70's, this little airport was a bee-hive of activity with over 300 airplanes based here. There was activity every where you looked from sunrise until 9:00 to 10:00 pm during good weather days. Today there are less that 50 airplanes on the field and it appears to be all but abandoned. I spent over 2 hours wandering around last November and did not see one single person the entire time I was there.

My father in law still has a hanger and a few airplanes at Harvey. My Uncle died in a breezy in May of 83 out there. In the mid 70s we lived in the neighborhood just to the southwest of there. The tornado that hit December of 75 took out the house. Have a lot of history and thousands of photos from back then.

My 1st 8 years of my life was at Harvey Young Airport -- VERY fond memories. I've been flying, and working on and around aircraft, since I was a sperm. Playing on the toys in Harvey's yard and in his aircraft salvage fuselages, flying all the time with my dad (he had 10K+ hrs.), camping and fishing at the lake, and flying model airplanes. I'm the only one to stay with Harvey in his house when I flew a Bonanza in 1978 from IA for an engine change at Spartan (where my dad went to A&P school in the 1950's, and 5 out of 6 of us were born in Tulsa). My dad was Pres. of the Oklahoma Airman's Assoc. Flying Club, and is an Honorary Lifetime Member of the club. I went on to fly F-14 Tomcats.

I was born and raised at Harvey Young, too. My Grandpa had a Piper Cub, a german glider called a Blanik(maybe that was a friend of his. I was a tiny child) and another glider he called the "Double Bubble" that was his but it was too odd to fly with ease..

I ferried a Pitts out of Harvey Young for Red S aircraft sales in early '80's. It was still a hopping place then. Sad most little GA airports are going this way. I still stop at all little airports to check things out when I'm driving around.

I really enjoyed you on the show which is what brought me to your channel. Your a cool dude with some big balls! I really don't like to fly anymore because we almost crashed on a delta flight from Tampa to ATL in a bad storm and scared me to death honestly but I used to love it and can appreciate it a little more watching you work bud. Thanks Mr. Lacey

One of my favorite places honestly...sentiment from when I was a kid. I grew up on that property. Last year they tore down the house - claimed they were going to do a full restoration on the airport, and then skipped out. All they did was tear down history and replace it with nothing. It upsets me greatly to see this once active airport reduced to nearly nothing. Most non pilots think the airport is abandoned. But the good ol boys still gather together at whats left of the FBO and chew the fat. Some still fly here. But like it was when there were shops and flight schools and Harvey Young would have outdoor parties and blast his music on the giant outdoor speakers.

Been around planes my whole life. I'm sure we know some of the same people. My dad was a pilot with over 2500 hours in WW2 in a C47 and then flew commercial. I had a good friend in Tulsa that was a commercial pilot who flew for a car dealer I worked for. Also, a little factoid, I was Doyle Knowles mail man for years. I live really close to him. He ran the airport for a long time.

Thanks for sharing this and your support for GA! Its sad that even the GA community in Tulsa hardly has the numbers to support Harvey Young. As a KRVS Hangar Rat I worry!

350 take offs and landings out of Harvey around 01 in Ercoupes. Had the two end hangars at the other end of the row Kevin mentioned he worked at. Dale Frakes worked in our hangar. Stories of an MU-2 getting in out of Harvey on a couple of occasions.

I used to fly in and out of there many times..I got acquainted with Harvey and even his mother who lived with him on the property.my favorite story is when Herb Harckom ,a test pilot for American did a low pass from north to south in a Lockheed Electra!..I flew most of the planes of the Oklahoma Airmen flying club, and bought an Aeronca Champ which I kept in a T Hangar..

its an absolute shame, like you said we can only hope the new hangers are full of planes and not being used as storage units.

Kevin, I learned to fly at Harvey Young Airport back in the early to mid 60's. Your right, there was as many as 10 to 15 airplanes in the pattern at one time. I also towed the sailplanes from 1967 to about 1976. We used a Stinson L5 with a R680 -with 225 hp. Along with the L-5 I towed with a Stearman that had a 240 hp tank engine. Those were the good old days and what I would do to return to that period of my life.

Awesome. Didn't know you flew out of Harvey Young AND you graduated from Spartan! Of course you probably know by now that someone's sinking $10 million+ into completely refurbishing Harvey Young and turning it into an awesome Art Deco 1930s antique aviation maintenance / conference center. As I understand it the airport will be renamed Douglas Memorial, it's already closed down for renovations and it is supposed to reopen next summer (2018.)

It is a shame, right in the middle of town, good location, bad security, open t-hangars are $135.00 per month, the runway is rough as a fire road in the Rockies. The guy that owns it is not highly spoken of from what I hear however the guy that manages it is a great guy. It is no wander it is a ghost town. It could be brought back to life if someone would put the effort into it. I would love to hangar there if they would try to improve it.

Tulsa is where I was born, raised south of there. It's a shame to see an airport in such bad shape.

Kevin, I know this is an old video but I tell you it looks IDENTICAL to some of the bush airports in Russia today. How far we have fallen.

Great video. But it's so sad to see how general aviation is slowly dying.
