Welcome to Mystara: Locating Blackmoor

One of the biggest mysteries in the Known World setting is where exactly the long-dead city of Blackmoor is located. The actual location is left up to the DM, but there are some continuity problems because of the later addition of the Hollow World. But with a little bit of deductive reasoning, I've narrowed the location to four possible sites.

There is a reference in the Hollow World boxed set that there were smaller polar openings that the Immortals closed up and replaced with the new, larger ones after the Rain of Fire.

I like to acknowledge when I read something wrong, in the hopes it makes someone laugh. Lactating Blackmoor. Great video.

You do know that the Hollow World boxset gives the exact location of Blackmoor on the Pre-cataclysm map? It was located in central Skothar south of Thonia and north of Tanagoro and east of Proto-Alphatia. So there is no mystery to where it was located. What is left of Blackmoor would be high in the Netsun range or under the sea in the Sea of Brun off the Netsun coast. This would also be the reason that no ruins have ever been found as this area is unexplored by any of the current empires, and with most of that region underwater it will probably never be found.

Always love these videos, my DM just started a Mystara game using the ACKs system... we are starting in the Black Eagle barony xD, first time for me.

I'm starting my players in Denagoth, after Saga of the Shadow Lord. Mystara and ACKs seem to be made for one another. I'll be using the old Warmachine-system for mass combat though.

Excellent analysis. I was glad to find your channel, because most fellow tabletop dinos don't remember anything beyond Threshold.

I went Northern Skothar. My concept of Returned Blackmoor ran off this, as found in Threshold mag.

Glad you mentioned the thrown artifacts idea, the obvious issue around almost any placement is the existence of the Radiance in Glantri.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember references of the Nucleus of the Sphere having been moved from its original position
@Scaramanga7
@Scaramanga7 5 лет назад
@@ingridplata2411 I don't have the book to hand, but as I recall, there was a reference to Glantri being built up around the location of the Radiance, then another to moving at least a substantial part of it, as well as a reference to that part having always been there. It still confuses the crud out of me.

I thought that the "Great Rain of Fire" altered the rotation of the planet moving the location of Blackmoor to the North Pole area. Soon after that the Immortals created the Hollow World creating an opening to that world from the outside world at the location where Blackmoor once was...... Did i read that somewhere or is it my imagination?
@Pariah1974
@Pariah1974 5 лет назад
This is what I believed also. I thought the world was a normal earth like planet, and the Immortals hollowed it out to rescue dying civilizations.
@viktord2025

There used to be smaller polar openings, but after the Great Rain of Fire the Immortals had to seal those up and create new ones

I thought the Hollow World was created after Blackmoor blew up, so it's a non-issue. Am I wrong? Also Karsus's Folly in the Realms only destroyed the Netherese Empire, not anyone else. The falling Enclaves probably caused some earthquakes and collateral damage but only the flying cities of Netheril were wiped out - the ground-dwelling survivors took a long time to vanish after that and ended up moving around and integrating with other peoples rather than just being instantly wiped out (pesky Phaerim).

Well, MY theory on why anybody is still alive in Faerun is because Ao is such a powerful (and dickwad-ish) deity that he manages to survive even the worst cataclysm or Twilight of the Gods, then after he watches everybody die in glorious hellfire, he realizes that a dead planet is actually quite boring, so he pulls a DBZ and wishes everybody back to life without any memories of ever being killed. That's right, Forgotten Realms players. LITERALLY NOTHING YOU DO MATTERS, because if you screw up (which has to happen eventually since there's an apocalypse every Tuesday) the entire world will just respawn anyway.
@kieranbrewer939

It's also probably why everything in existence is in faerun cause some random wizard keeps dragging everything there to throw into the next attempt to end the world

I thought the Orcs of Thar Gazetteer had a map that showed the location of Ancient Blackmoor... Yep, Page 63 of 70 in the "Orcs of Thar II" PDF, "Tribal Migrations in the Known World" Location 3 "Ancient Blackmoor (2400BC)", right at the fork of the Borea River.

In terms of the Hollow World, weren't there plans on the table to make a "Blackmoor Resurgent" Storyline, involving Blackmoor being found in the Hollow World, then returning to the surface somehow? Granted, my primary source for this is the Dungeon Master's Guild description for the Hollow World, but they claim it was planned, but cancelled with the rest of the BECMI/RC Line.

I've always wondered, was the original Blackmoor (not the Mystaran one) sci-fi as well or was that exclusive to Mystara?
@Scaramanga7
@Scaramanga7 5 лет назад
Arneson's Temple of the Frog adventure was unabashedly sf, so I'd consider it a yes. There's a documentary in the works about Blackmoor, which should answer a lot of questions, given the crazy access the filmmakers have to the involved parties and extant documents.

Your reasoning that excludes the longitude of the known world is faulty. If you tilt the planet to put Ethengar at the pole, that longitude becomes a ring curving down from the pole to the equator and back up again.
