The floorboards are pretty creaky in the library - especially the old library. Love the cannonball that was fired into the college at the top of the stairs.
Wonderful place - even more super than when I was there in the 1980s. Small quibble - it's pronounced St John's, not Saint John's. Similar to the shortening of the surname St John to sounding like SIN-jin. So more like Sin John's College (-;
As a Catholic who highly regards St John’s history, and one day aspires to study there, that was a somewhat hurtful and underhand comment about Thomas White’s Catholicism.
It's ironic that Oxford University, which was devoutly Catholic during the Reformation (unlike Cambridge, which was a hotbed of Protestant ideas and ideals), has twice in the space of four hundred years recalled Ecclesia Anglicana to its rightful place as a living part of the Church Universal. Whenever I'm in Oxford I like to call in at St. John's College in order to attend Choral Evensong and to remember the Blessed William Laud, the last Archbishop of Canterbury to be martyred, whose headless body is interred in the Chapel.
@@user-wl9gw7xe2q This is flippant and totally disingenuous. I didn't demand it be pulled down or anything like that. It's just merely disappointing that an institution with such a great history would so dismissively spit on it like that.
After watching videos of different colleges of oxford universities I don’t want to go to oxford it’s now run by women and lgbt etc etc. Not confident on its long term success.
