A couple of weeks ago we posted up our interview with Dave Southall talking about his Board Track Racer build. This piqued our interest in the history of the bikes, tracks, and racers so in this episode we take a look at the history behind the pioneering boardtrack racers of days past. Names such as Albery 'shrimp' Burns, Ray Weishaar and Eddie Hasha. Along with motorcycles from the likes of Harley Davidson, Indian and Excelsior.
If you liked this, let us know and we'll make more history episodes.

My granddad, born in 1908 in New Jersey, USA, said he owned an Indian motorcycle when he was teenager. Probably looked a lot like some of these wonderful racing bikes. One of his favorite stories was having his brakes fail while descending a steep hill in his hometown. To stop his bike, he ended up crashing into a big, thorny blackberry bush. He laughed when he told this story. RIP, grandpa, you're greatly missed.

Reminds me of a kid in elementary school, mid 60’s we all called Fat Pete. Obnoxious mouthpiece broke his chain at the top of a hill, went squealing like a pig through cross traffic and launched about 20’ into the blackberries! It took the fire department to extricate his fat sorry ass out of that Venus fly trap. But his YAP never missed a beat!🤣🤣🇨🇦

I grew up in Uniontown, one of the US Murderdrome locations. My family were car/racing enthusiasts and I’ve heard endless tales of our small town being an internationally known racing location. Seeing it in a couple of the newspaper articles made my night. Glad to send the video to my former race car driving and motorcycle loving father who is in his 70’s. Thank you. There are several great books about Uniontown speedway out there, and the current fastest woman on a motorcycle is from Uniontown, Pennsylvania, USA.

Awesome work. The bikes at the end of BTR’s run were true Hot Rods of the era. Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum has several running examples / brands. Unfortunately Dale has passed, but I can picture him starting that Big Valve Excelsior on more than one occasion and it shooting foot long flames out of the short straight pipes. ✌🏼

Would love to hear more about the racing teams especially the Excelsior team. So few people realize that board track racing for motorcycles was huge back then and was the NASCAR of the day. The big three weren't Ford, GM and Chrysler but rather Harley Davidson, Indian and Excelsior Henderson. Great video, can't wait to see more

My first motorcycle was a 1939 DWK 3PS. I was second owner. It was a 97cc, 3 HP light single cylinder bike that only maintained 35 mph. As real piece of history. I was always a bit curious how small bore motorcycles could generate enough speed to run board track races at 90 mph+. The dangers in these races are legendary.

I love the style of these bikes. Huge inspiration for me personally. I made one in very similar style from an old bicycle and a 5hp Briggs and Stratton engine. I was 14 years old when I built it. I was clocked going 70 mph in a 35 from a highway patrol. The officer was so intrigued he let me go telling me to go home slowly. I rode it to school for 4 years. It was my first motorcycle I’ve ever built and ridden. Prototyping stage was interesting . I’ve gotten the thing 80mph here and there complete with stock bicycle brakes, forks , tires, and wheels. Talk about excitement. Bicycle tires are completely worn out in 200 miles. Let alone the chain popping off the sprocket, locking the rear wheel and skidding about missing bushes, ditches, and barbed wire fences. Creativity is so important, it’s life itself. Keep riding for life.

As a kid my dad took me to Tiffan Ohio for an annual Indian motorcycle show . We drove all the way from Chicago to Ohio on an Indian Chief 1948 , 80 cu , bored and stoked . It had a " buddy seat " , which is by no means comfortable . My butt still hurts at 58 . They would have a projector playing vintage films of wood tracks , and hill climbing . I wonder if it's still active ? This was back in1978ish . After , we would go to Write & Patterson AFB museum in Dayton Ohio . I sure miss my father . It was one subject we shared in common . Antique motorcycles and planes . We even had a 1939 Waco UPF-7 and an old Sparrow Hawk biplane , converted into a low wing . Both won prizes at Oshkosh airshow , in the antique category . He was something my dad .

Growing up in America I learned how to operate a motorcycle at 10 yrs old. It was a Sears 106 it was underpowered and overweight but I believe it’s deficiency made me a much better rider. I soon learned how to extract every bit of power from timely speed-shifting to dangerous countersteering tactics at high speed entering a turn to scrub off speed, I eventually high-sided after digging a peg and was thrown 20 ft almost straight up. Wreckless abandon made me somewhat competitive with my pals on their Hodaka Combat Wombat, Yamaha DT100, and some other odd looking thing composed of plumbing leftovers ,wheelchair parts and an antique tiller that would wind out faster than all of us but mostly on paved ground. I still remember sparks would stream from behind a large exposed flywheel while it made squealing belt sounds paining the motor to lurch and jump within its frame. At any throttle change it would pop n snarl often backfiring ejecting his exhaust as he flew by loudly giggling. None of us cared much for “Red” but looking back I wouldn’t trade the experiences for anything. And no I never rode Red’s bike. Would I ride it today? Hell no I’m not ready to die yet. I sure hope Red eventually upgraded and kept that cantankerous monstrosity under a tarp somewhere. I kinda miss the thing it was a belly-laugh throughout an era in my youth. Bless you Red wherever you are.

Very very interesting. My grandfather ran a bike with a female rider on the back in a motordrome that followed the traveling fair in the '30s and '40s in USA eastern seaboard regions from Virginia to Florida and up to New York . Those bikes are cool. It took "BIG BALLS OF FIRE" to race like that. 《○○》

From across the pond, I must say this content is great!! I am forever thankful that I grew up in a motorcycle family and was taught about this kinda stuff when I was young. My dad (70 years old) and I (32) still talk about the board track and now flat track racing here in the US it seems at least once a week on the phone!

My old man has Major Taylor's Pierce Arrow bicycle board track bicycle. We also have a 1912 Pierce Arrow motorbike, total loss oiling system belt driven 596 cc single, there are 5 in existence but ours is the only one that still runs! Not For Sale. Family heirloom. We still ride it at shows and drag race it at the Irwindale drag strip once a year at an antique motorcycle show my dad puts on.

My Grandfather Komer Henery McFadden loved racing his Indian bike in Dallas. Grandma said even in the 30s he could be found racing in the hills just outside of Dallas. What is left of the hill is between the east and west lanes of I 20. Can still see the pictures of her from the Twenties sitting on the finder of his model T in her flapper skirt. Grandma was a true dish.lol

I love the old board track racing and the bikes. I wanted Craig Jones to build me a Royal Enfield bike based upon a board tracker, & styled like an Indian Scout Wall Of Death bike with pics of already converted Enfields as a guideline.. But he always made excuses for everything I asked of him. Maybe he wasn't experienced enough to make a flat tanker with downtube of frame over the top of the tank etc, and an authentic fully & working leaf spring fork.. But anyway, that's all behind me now and being a Christian, I have forgotten about this bad communication, as his Mother was unknowingly to me ill at this time, and I was on medication that wasn't agreeing with my way of thinking. I've got my dream bobber now, which ironically has one of his rigid conversions! A great and very interesting upload Paul. As usual, your productions are absolutely Top Notch, and well worthy of TV broadcast. Well done!

Cool! I read an article decades ago about board tracks, it's a very little known period of motorcycling racing. The splinters were said to be caused by acud being used to clean the pul off the boards, which would make the wood splinter. One rider crashed and taken to hospital with 200 splinters, one as big as a knife blade, in his body (it seems he survived).
