When I lived on 9th and Oak, the best food you could find was hotdogs at a liquor store. I was pretty happy with myself doing a boardslide on that entire round rail.
Re-posting: It's quite unfortunate that you don't understand or appreciate something until you're threatened with, and finally realized, LOSS. I lived in the bay area (Oakland) for a years (lost my job and moved out but would return in a hot minute). I saw the change... but I also saw the disregard and apathy in our neighborhoods. We let people not maintain the streets, we let men prostitute little girls and women on the streets (San Pablo Avenue, Grand, etc.), we let foreigners (Asian and Middle-Easterners) put liquor stores and cheap unhealthy Chinese restaurants, Asian beauty stores in the neighborhoods, you let people sell drugs on your streets and watch your men and young men kill each other with abandon, you don't vote, you don't serve on juries... now white folks see the potential of Oakland and places like Hunters' Point San Francisco... and you cry because you are being forced out.... WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?????!!!!!!! I ALMOST DON'T CARE. See what your lack of concern, discipline, care, and community gets you? Do you see???
I can agree with you on what you say. A lot of Oakland problems is out in the open when other cities have the same problems it’s just hidden. All of the crime that occurs in Oakland is by the resident there. I knew a lot of not of none black wealthy real estate brokers and agents who would set up meetings there to sell drugs. They lived in big houses, in the valley or Dublin,Pleasanton drove Ferrari at the age of 20, and know one would think otherwise because what race they are. The biggest Pimps and drug dealers don’t live in Oakland they live in Quite suburbs. Liquor store is because city would zone the area for a grocery store. Some Foreign countries give loans to people to come to America just to open a business, America would never give a business loan without collateral. It’s harder to get a business than it is a house. That why foreigners all businesses there.
@ brut 20 "Hipsterfied?" No, it's moved up to straight yuppie-fied. It's always the same pattern: the Punx and weirdos find affordable living space where the neighbors don't mind you making noise. Then the hipsters start trickling in (with their trust fund money), and demanding organic free-range coffee, and jack up the rental costs. Then the yuppies pour in, when (at least in West Oakland) they can afford to own a Victorian house that just needs some major TLC.... And There Goes The Neighborhood.
It's all about money or lack of it. If you are not behind on your taxes, own your home, have savings and other assets, and live debt free no one can come in and move you out easily. Broke people needing money badly are prey to those with money who want their property. America is about wealth period. If you are poor it will treat you unkindly.
2018 update, hippsters have priced themselves out of west and north Oakland the neighborhood is going to crap again. In fact they made it worse the homeless population has doubled.

I understand 2 bedroom 1 bath bungalows in East Oakland (which has an even worse reputation) are selling for $400,000, yet it's so dangerous you have to carry a gun with you in the daytime, and you can't go out at night. Gentrification does not seem to be working in Oakland.
A A Q it is working. This why the higher rent/selling goes. The higher crime will go up. Cause they have to sell even more dope/rob more people/ just to stay there. Unless they don't mind moving to the valley like most do/did. And cops aren't gonna babysit the hard working man and protect him. So you protect yourself and either get in a jam and catch a case. Or get killed. Either way. They'll weed folks out.
Honestly I always lived in neighborhoods with poc... unless your from st.louis where it doesn’t matter I’ve found that if you do you and mind your own business people in these neighborhoods won’t bother you and they are actually very sweet.
On linden st there was a woman that used to walk around clucking like a chicken. she used to live next door in a huge abandoned apartment house all by herself and have terrible violent fights all by herself at night... we lived next door . We said . Ok , whatever... scared us tho ... we moved...I wonder what happened to her??? Had wonderful memories hanging out in defermermary park

I live in a mostly white community where immigrants came from norway and sweden and built this culture of hard work, family and community spirit and now the blacks from Chicago,Detroit,Milwaukee are moving here for the good welfare systems and they DON'T GIVE A DAM about our culture " Their words" This is a small town and they tend to want to stay inside or sit on the porch, but there is trash in front of their places and the kids are running all over the place screaming and the adults are talking that trash i CALL IT TALKING SIDEWAYS, WHAT SHOULD WE DO I ASK YOU OUT THERE?.
Send back the caravans to their homelands, and give those Emigration Centers to the homeless. It’s no fair that while people from here are living on such horrible conditions, the emigrants are living very comfortable, at no cost to them.
