Brandon, I use the silver streak pens, and there is a built in sharpener right in the top end , just pull it out and use the open end use it like a regular pencil sharpener, the directions are on the back of the package it came in, I guess you forgot to look on the package,,, ha, ha,
I use a silverstreak lead holder as well...I kind of have a love hate relationship with it. It never fails that as soon as I get the tip just like I like it I'll make one mark and drop it. Lately I've been playing around with the wooden equivalent and the point seems more resilient.
Great tip about the grinding metal getting in hair and then in eyes while showering. I wouldn't have thought of that and now I will be careful about that. Thanks Brandon.
I’m loving the channel! Also about the part of getting metal in the eyes. I switch from glasses to a whole face shield I know it’s annoying but it’s so worth it. Because when they pick the metal out of your eyes they do it with a needle just like if you had a splinter and you’re watching the whole time.
@@BrandonLund I feel your pain. I’m 40 now and I’m becoming more careful about stuff. Also you spoke about flash burn from cheaper helmets. I think I need to buy a better helmet I’m using the titanium from Harbor freight the hundred dollar one. Any recommendations?
Great video Brandon. Every time I say to myself this will only take a second I'm going to get my safety glasses instead. Recently I just got my home shop back going after 10 years , many things got in the way including health problems. I decided to replace my very old Clarke 130E Mk2, and picked up a Vipermig 180i Mig / Stick machine for $489. at my local fleet farm, along with a Ironton carbide chop saw. Now I just need to pick up some steel. Think I'm going to make a grinder stand, followed by a headache rack for the truck. I always loved welding, I'm felling fortunate to be able to do it again.
Awesome man! Good for you! There is nothing better (in my opinion) to keep your mind and body healthy than to build something in the workshop. Whenever I'm having a bad day, a little workshop time always seems to make things better. Congratulations man!
Good tip on the glasses, but I use a full face shield now. I was grinding at work a few years ago and I had a million to one metel sliver go just under my safety glasses and regular glasses. Ever since then, full shield!
Same here. I've been trying to do better too. I've had more eye injuries than I care to remember and so far haven't lost my sight. I'm much more inclined to wear safety glasses and a face shield now

Frank: Welcome to the world of welding! First things first, where are you going to be welding? In your garage, or outside in your yard? Remember to vent the fumes caused during the welding process. Also, make sure that you have a safe welding space. Next, remove anything flammable within 10 ft. of your welding table, whatever that might look like. Buy a 10lb. ABC fire extinguisher. Keep it at the entrance/exit of your welding space. If your space is pretty small, invest in some 8' x 10' welding blanket. You can use these to make a room within a room by hanging them from the ceiling joists. Did you purchase, hearing protection, safety glasses and a grinding face shield, along with a welders helmet to protect your eyes, Wear denim or cotton pants, and shirt, or a leather jacket for welding. Never use short sleeves, or put cuffs in your pants, to prevent burns. Have a great experience with your newfound vocation.
I may have went overboard, in just two months of my welding and fab hobby, I have bought 3 welders, 2 plasma cutters, a Evolution metal chopsaw, two portable bad saws (One is set up horizontal and one is set up vertical) diamond cutting blades, 4 angle grinders, and about every marking tool you can imagine. 😜 Oh and a drill press, and belt/disc sander.
You must live in a cold climate. I wish I could work outside in FL with a leather welding coat. Other than occaisional stick welding on a borrowed Lincoln 225 buzz box, I learned on TIG welding light gauge stainless. My first welder in 2000 was a Miller 180SD- almost got the Miller econo tig for $1300, but wanted to have the lower minimum amps for when the 18g got hot. In less than a year I got the spectrum 375 plasma cutter
Just thought I would I would let you know, I just bought a harbor freight 125 flux core welder. I have been searching youtube for instruction as to how to use it. you're channel is far superior than any other I have come across. By the way I am from Clinton Maine, what part of Maine are you from?
For the silver pencil once you have the silver lead out take the cap out and the open end you put the end of the lead in and twist and you will have a point
Back in the late 70s i had a lot of steel removed from my eyes. I had bought a used truck topper from a guy at work. It was made of steel tubing and aluminum, so I was grinding and sanding it. On one of those days I had gone to work and thought it happened there so they sent me to the eye doctor. The next time I needed steel removed i had taken a y day and being on my own time I spent the whole day at the eye doctor's office because they had to work me in. I had no choice but to wait.

Thank you for the no nonsense run down of what you need to get started. I am interested in welding as a hobby and am waiting on my first welding machine. It is refreshing to hear honest and experienced recommendations- especially about what you really need. Safety is important for us older guys and I am on the fence with selecting my first helmet. I am focusing on TIG and am very concerned in not getting flashed. The Jackson helmet was one I never considered. Is that good with the TIG process? Thanks for your vids- I subscribed!
Thanks Andrew I appreciate the Sub and your kind words. I love my Jackson helmet. It has a nice wide view, easily adjustable, i have never been flashed and it's great with tig. The headgear is adjustable and very comfortable. It's a great all around helmet for the money. I broke one a couple years ago and they sent me another free of charge so I can also recommend they are pretty good about backing up their stuff.
Good video. It feels like a very bad system where people in general don't know how a tape measure should be read. With the metric system every person knows what the small unit on the measuring tape is from the start.
hello am in Australia.. Have a job that has a lot of steel flooring around job site. Laydown of electode a pain. Using a modern small inverter stick welder. Q) anywhere in USA / your company sell a stick electrode holder with ON OFF switch. ? Have never seem one. Only one on www is one for 12 v vehicle welders it seems. Seems a no brainer to have the option? any info appreciated. Has to deal with wide range amps no doubt.
Brandon, what happened to the old Craftsman buzz box? Did it totally break down or is it just a minor issue? I almost never hear of anybody breaking one of those!
I havent quite figured it out yet. It still works, but if I set the amperage below 120 amps, the amperage lever creeps up. If I set it beyond 120 amps, it holds fine. There is something in the mechanism that is broken or worn but it's a very nice welder if I could fix that issue. Maybe we will test into it in a future episode

I notice that you talk about using only hand tightening for the grinder. Do you think it matters if a person (me, a woman) can’t get as much torch as the average man? Should the tool be used then or do you recommend staying with hand tightening. I am not a weakling but compared to my husband…. Just wonder what your opinion is.
If you don't feel comfortable tightening it by hand you can always use the wrench. The nut holding the wheel tightens as it's being used so keep that in mind as you use the wrench. Most everyone that uses a wrench has a tendancy to overtighten the wheel which also can be problematic.
That blade you recommend is fine with mild steel but if you use it on any hardened steel such as oil field pipe, crystallized or hardened steel it will quickly ruin the blade.
It sounds like your luck is about as bad as mine! Do you get floaties in your vision occasionally? I have them sometimes but thankfully my vision is good
@@BrandonLund for the past couple of years my main problem has been my eyes can't collect enough light. I keep a head lamp on my hat all the time. As long as I have good lighten I can see anything good and clear

I’m only a few months into learning welding and I have a neighbor who wants me to fix his gate, my question is how much should I charge him. I have no idea what to charge people if they ask.
@Ruben Vargas that's a good question and the answer will vary wildly depending on region. The average rate across the nation according to zip recruiter is 18/hr which I think is low. In my area a beginner welder could easily charge 20/hr and have more work then they could handle. My thought process starting out was I wanted to make sure I was charging less than those around me so I could get my name out there as I gained experience but not work so cheap that I was giving my work away. Whereas he is your neighbor (and assuming you like him) I would probably give him a better deal than you would a complete stranger. I would say if you charged him the national average of 18.00 you would likely make a small profit plus gain some valuable experience. If he asks how you arrived at that number you can tell him you went by the national average. That would be hard for him to complain about.
Get some liability insurance and start marketing yourself. Only take on work that you can confidently complete. Repair work is pretty straight forward, You can start getting picky about what work you will and wont do once you've established yourself, but until then, hustle.
It depends what your doing. For everything I do on my channel I have yet to max out my 160 amp welder. If your working with 3/8" or less 160 is plenty.
one time i drill some holes on a electric box dress a cotton sweater, whit a safty glasses on but i take my glasses to wipe my eye from sweating whit my sweater sleeve, guess what ,,,, I load my eyes whit pieces of steel from my sweater sleeve ,,i never forget that one ,,,,

He doesn't hurt anyone doing that About you , your videos are very interesting especially the cast iron series About that I can give you an advice ,change coupon because I think that the base metal can be contaminated from all the filler metal you put on it during the series I like your videos otherwise I wasn't here commenting
I have seen some of his videos but I was not aware of any of that. I guess from a fellow you tubers standpoint it would be easy to use this platform to express myself outside of welding and DIY stuff, but probably not a great idea to stray too far from what my fans came for. You are spot on about the repeated repairs. In fact I am considering getting a new piece and find it’s breaking strength before it’s repaired. The damaged are is getting rather large from trying to remove the prior repairs each time. Great comment and thank you.👍
Brandon Lund short summary is that Chuck posted some pretty bad stuff that we fought WWII to stop from happening way back in the 40s. I think everybody can agree and be happy that you're older and more mature and have good manners, and don't go around creating drama on RU-vid! Sparks, grit, splinters, molten metal, hot slag, and arc flash (you will get eye flashed, and sunburned on exposed skin!) are the bane of a welder's existence. Eye, ear, head, hand, lung protection are so important. A good welding coat, breaches or apron. Proper steel toe boots. Grinders are the enemy!!!! A solid hood with appropriate shading, and a cap to keep your hair and scalp from getting burnt up. Never ever, ever use brake disc cleaner on the work being welded!!!! Acetone only. You will die, literally!!!! Mark my words. If you need to weld on something galvanized, thoroughly grind away the coating 2-3 inches back from the weld joint, or you'll be violently vomiting. Remedy for breathing these fumes: drink milk to ease the nausea. If you do get arc flashed, put wet tea bags on your eyes for 30-60 minutes to relieve the irritation. If this doesn't help, then you've gottent metal or grit in your eyes, and may need to see a doctor. Never ever, ever operate any gas powered welding machine or generator in an enclosed space. The carbon monoxide will kill you. If you ignore this advice, have your life insurance and funeral arrangements set. Welding is fun, and pays well, if you're good at it. Safety and competence at the trade craft are key. If you're incompetent you will not make money, and likely get fired with extreme prejudice. If you dismiss safety, you will probably get fired, seriously injured, killed, or harm someone else. That's the harsh reality.
I have had metal particles wash out of my hair or eye brows when i got in the shower too. They stick to the moisture in your eye. And you must seek immediate medical attention... if you leave it overnight then the metal will rust and you need three visits to the emergency room ... first to remove the metal and then twice more to remove the flecks of rust. Not good. Not fun.
