Many thanks to Andy the good folks at Duenner Supply Co, Tulsa. for helping use test 360 Brass welding for our upcoming watertight door project. Also: MIG cover gas in 100% Argon.
For someone that has learnt welding on their own, your doing an amazing job, you should be very proud. Just a few tips, I've noticed with your mig welding the welds a a bit large, try increasing your amps or lowering you wire feed and additionally when your welding move the torch in a circular motion or in a for/aft motion this will help with weld preheat and penetration, keep up the good work. I'm a Machinist, Aerospace Welder and Aircraft Engineer all trade qualified in Australia.
Informative video. Thanks for posting. It would probably serve you to learn TIG because as you get closer to the finishes phase, there are more opportunities for custom fittings on your boat. Another commenter mentioned Jody at weldingtipsandtricks. Yes, his videos are really useful. In any event, good luck. And please, please keep that beautiful little boy safe in your shop and on the boat. Extra caution is for his own sake. But a mishap that hurt him could color your whole building experience.
Hi guys, I'm setting up a foundry and found your channel looking into that. (building a graphite lined dual fuel furnace similar to yours), and have to tell you your videos on the furnace build and burner assy outclass any I've found in the foundry world. We think and work alike, wish you were my neighbor (I don't much care what mine think either). Anyway, I know this is old, but a tip - if you PUSH the MIG gun instead of dragging, it will help the weld "lay down". Keep up the excellent work!
Sure, it works great. We use it to weld cast iron to mild steel, as well as clad mild steel with the same Silicon Bronze wire. See "Anchor Winch Rebuild - Part 2 - MIG Brazing" for an example.
I LOVE your testing procedures! With my preconceived notions, I would have (and did) looked at those TIG welds and said that they were stronger than the humped-up MIG welds with the sil-bronze wire. Your cut-through test, and bending test, was very convincing.
do you know if there's someway I can weld 1018 steel to bras using MIG welding? there's some time I'm wandering. Thanks for the video, it's really helpful.
TIG has it's place, and I love welding with my TIG welder, but for large scale jobs, you just can't deny MIG is the way to go. I just got a new MIG setup, with a spool gun, and are looking forward to trying that over TIG welding all my aluminum work.
