Not everyone needs a welding turntable. But there came a time where I needed one bad.
When I started my welding business side hustle, within a few months, I started getting orders for hundreds of small stainless round parts.
I did the first few by hand and I could see right away I needed a more efficient process to speed up the welding as well as to make the welds prettier.
I didn’t have much money so I made a crude turntable out of an old bike…and powered it with a variable speed drill with a hose clamp on the trigger to adjust speed.
Since that first DIY bicycle turntable I have used several different turntables and positioners.
So this video compares 2 of my older turntables to a newer model MK cobraturn.

Just want to say that I started out a few years ago as a student in a trade school and like most other students, that is where we were introduced to your videos. You have provided me with more of a foundation than any of my instructors, thank you for your commitment to educating upcoming welders. Thanks to you, I am now a rig welder.

I take no offense to your comment and the answer is simple really. School gave me a booth, a welding machine, materials, consumables and time. That’s what the money paid for. The instructors…, some of them were great. However, like many places you will go in life… if there’s an easy, well paying job, the people that deserve it aren’t going to be the ones that have it. The people that know the right people and the right things to say to gain favor will have those jobs. Two years on the job and I now have more actual experience than (most of) those who ‘taught me’ in school. Do I regret going to school? No. Do I suggest going to school? No. In my opinion, on the job training is the best form of education you can get. You will learn from industry leading professionals much faster than you will trying to figure it out on your own. Kind of like watching Jody explain everything and trying to emulate him.

Wow 👌 👏 awesome job Jody. Like the good old days, demo equipment, busting out the Dynasty, talking about gadgets and techniques that help....so great to see! Inspiring to me, cuz your videos hot me into TIG to begin with. I used to watch these all day every day. There are some channels that carry the torch well, but nothing beats good ol Jody when it comes to quality content. 👌 thankyou!

Thanks again Jody. I like the clear cups when i have to use a mirror to see where i am welding. They work great when you are welding the backside of an M bracket on a pontoon boat for example. They are fragile, you should sell a torch rest/stand with them. If they are hot and you knock something they are then broken. Without your videos I doubt I would be welding for my customers. It's been a good trip

just to say,its nice to move on from drilling holes then using nut and bolt to join metals, or using pop rivet, In my younger days I was a sheet metal fabricater forming soldering copper, I moved into another skill as a steel fabricater as they just started me to weld I fell and damaged my wrist `I left to become a rail track layer some years after so my welding days never really got started, 30 years on and over 50 and always being the first to get hands on to repair, but never picked welding up after the accident But watching your earlyier video`s got me arc welding , then mig and now tig, just to say THANK YOU🙂

We had very large powered tilt ones at my old job. Especially useful for fixing machine shop screw ups where you need to do long beads of stacked build-up. We had clipped an old plug off of a whip for the wire feeder and hooked a toggle switch to it for an easy on/off. We also had monster sub arc tank rolls and dual positioners that could fit a 6m x 6m vessel under the head.

Thanks for pointing out the clutch - I'm building one and it's a great idea that I'm adding to my build ! I'm going to use it for turbo exhaust manifolds and spinning it around quickly to centre it will make it a lot quicker and convenient to use !!

I use a smaller Cobra Turn for lots of the work I do at Fox Racing, and I can say for a fact that it's worth the money. Incredibly smooth and consistent, and a great top plate for mounting all sorts of chucks. Mine is the one with the foot pedal.

I made my table with a $40 Chevy truck front wheel bearing assembly, go-kart chain and a small 12v gearhead motor. I use a Milwaukee 12v tool battery. It all works slick. I have however gotten lazy and half blind so I actually attach the torch to a stand like your camera prop and weld away. I can manually move the stand base if needed.

Used those cobra turns at an aerospace shop I worked at for years. Definitely speeds up the process when you have hundreds of parts to weld. Only problem with them is the boards go out quite often. Can’t even start to tell you how many times we had to send them back to mk. Awfully expensive too, but ultimately worth buying if you can afford one.

Here is a project for you.. Pick up a treadmill for free.. Usually in the Spring. Pull the board out and that will be a PWM controller.. Chances are (assuming your single speed positioner has a DC motor) that PWM controller will drive the motor you have.. Add a rheostat and voila you are back in business. I have added variable speed drive to my Chinese lathe, mill and drill press.. But I used the treadmill motor as those machines were single speed AC motors so would not work with the PWM controller. Its only certain treadmill models that work easily as they have the speed control built into the board.. Others do not and thats a little more complicated. Let me know if you want to do this at some point and I can help you select the right treadmill from Craigslist.

Would like too see a video on aluminum mitered corners, given the current economy, I'm using scrap from an old pontoon boat and its given me fits, especially when there is a crack in the mitered corner. Would like to see some recovery welds on this stuff that is not perfect. Alpha tig 200, 9 size cup. Miter cut with diablo metal cutting blade .Playing with settings. Would like to see you weld non perfect stuff. Love the tig finger by the way.

So I've always wondered about turntables. If the ground can't be run straight to the chuck doesn't the load pass through the bearings themselves or are there ground brushes of some sort? I'd think overtime the bearings would get arc burns and not run smoothly.
@waynegroves6922
@waynegroves6922 2 года назад
I've done it, but with a manual turner (think Lazy Susan turntable); the bearings became scorched enough to begin dragging.

Rpm to use = welding travel speed you want * 60sec /(pi* part diameter). And you don't have to guess anymore. The ultimate Cadillac product could have 2 settings a) Diameter b) Travel speed: to make it super easy and repeatable.
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 2 года назад
thats a good point but after years of manual welding different processes, I dont think I every actually knew exactly what travel speed I needed until I used a positioner.
