Man I've been welding for over 30 years. And I've never been able to run a 6013, let alone a root. I've always worked in power plants, nuclear, and coal, paper Mills, code work. Mostly 100% x--ray. Which only require 6010, and 8018, stainless, inconel. My hats off you sir. God bless.😃
6013 should give reasonable results...not pretty ... generally I would avoid on root welds because of how much slag and dirty finish they give. Also his current was too high to compensate for penetration ...but the result is still a BLOB
@@luciusirving5926 Yeah, I know what the numbers mean, regardless, 6013 is not used in any welding procedure I know of. People not working in the industry wouldn't be expected to know what a welding procedure is. In 4 decades of working in the trade, the only time I've even seen it used was in school practicing running beads on scrap steel. You know, welding 101. Any welding on a vessel will follow a procedure even if it is just a bracket welded to the outside. For the purposes of legislation, any piping in a closed system is a vessel.
I think I'm physically sick. I can kinda understand the 6013 so I'll give that a pass. But the build up on the interior wall is nasty at one point they switch to 7018 for the root. I guess going uphill was a plus but then they go downhill on the other side. The tacks were just huge bulbs.
Mashallah. Brother your root opening it too wide for that process uphill 6013. The open root gap should only be 0.125 in at the most. Hope this helps 🙏
Probably should have feathered and cleaned those tack welds up, especially after seeing the gargantuan size , let alone all the horrid grinding on the pipe o.d.
@@gregtipton2814 I welded for 30 years as a pipe welder, I was always taught by the old timers that we used 6010 for pipe. I'm 70 years old maybe things have thanks but 6010 It's different Then 6013
@@terryandrews7271 can't believe you've welded for 30years and don't know 6013is an all position rod,60 is tensile strength,1indicates ALL position, last number is type of flux,,I've welded for 40+years,6013 is low penetration rod but if your pipe is beveled reaching the bottom of your root pass shouldn't be a problem
@@gregtipton2814 Look this up smart ass see which one most Pipe fitters Weld with 6010 or 6013, Obviously was not permitted the education that you obviously think you have. You feel like you have to correct everybody, You're one of those guys most of my foremen were like you, They talked to talk but they couldn't walk the walk
@@terryandrews7271 nope still the same. 6013 as you know is a general purpose rod that has low penetration and is never used on pipe or any heavy structure. 6010 is still the main electrode for pipe root passes and 7018 is still the eletrode for fill and cap on pipe and structural welds. Next this fellow is gonna start making heavy fabrication videos using 6013.
ESAB's 6013s autoclean like 7018 and my Lincoln 6013s never did that before. Taking slag off of a Lincoln 6013 was too much work. 6013 flux compositions are confusing.
Horrible!!!.
so, usually there’s only a 1/8 tolerance as far as the cap and that cap is enormous. i will say you got penetration which is huge for open root pipe welds. could’ve used a grinding wheel not a cutting wheel for getting your tack down haha. you opened you’re fit up a bit with it. you got it done, just a bit huge. You’re rod could’ve been a smaller one and done multiple passes, what is that 5/16? not sure if it called for that.
New welder here, and MIG only. Curious: In the first part of the video, the stick traveled forward and back at a much greater distance than in the second half. Why is that?
Cause his keyhole was to large so he had to whip out to let the puddle cool...actually not a good welding video to watch if your learning his technique sucks and large whips like that don't make for a good root pass...6010 is a better root rod cause of it's deep penetration anyways
He trying to control his heat by whipping out of the puddle to get control of the keyhole. 6010 rod is usually what is used for root pass but lately I have been seeing more 8010 all the way to the cap for cross country pipe
@@loslobos5481 well 8010 is primarily vertical down and out of position welds but can be used for all positions. Typically it has to have a second pass deposited as fast as possible after the root pass...usually the pipe needs to be heated anywhere from 300-500 degrees on thicker pipe and it's a drag rod so whipping is not recommended that's why 6010 deep penetration and fast cooling is what I've only ever used and seen with 7018 caps I've rarely seen 8010 but different parts of the country may be different I don't know it all learn new shit every day....this guy's technique in the video is awful
