Thank you. My welds tend to look rough, and knowing that it's okay to grind and work the metal until the result is acceptable. I keep hearing the little voice saying, Dad raised a welder, not a grinder. But until I can get perfection, I'll have to grind.

I got a job and when I ran the weld test, they said the volts were set at 27V and they didn't say the wire speed. I just got out to college and i only was use to welding with 1/4 inch and 3/8 material at like 20-22 v with a wire speed from 335 .Why would they be welding at such a high temp.? I just kept blowing through as soon as i pulled the trigger. We didn't really go over thin 16 gauge sheet metal in college. This job is a piece rate so they said they run hot and fast. I still got the job, but the welds were unsatisfactory.

I played around with Tig filler wire a bit to bridge a little gap and i have to say it works like a charm. Just put a tig filler in this case 3/32 in the gap and play a little with the settings. Worked pretty good on my test pieces

Great video Man Cub, recently I had to fix a trailer with some broken side supports, they were 16 gauge , I decided to fix with 1/8 angle which did work and I spot welded then ran full beads on top. It is a pain to get nice welds that work. I was wondering if you could do a video on welding thin sheet to thicker sheet as many times we have to do repairs that require welding thick to thin to make something stronger than it was when it came in for repair. thanks
@everlastgenerator

@quickshot4050
@quickshot4050 3 года назад
Hey Bruce, I saw your comment and in case you were still wondering, what I do, is when you’re welding with the mig gun, focus your gun towards the thicker metal then quickly drag the puddle to the thinner metal and back to the thicker metal, kinda like whipping with pipe, it’s how I’ve done it and I do thin gauge welding as my job lol
@bruced1429
@bruced1429 3 года назад
@@quickshot4050 Hay thanks for the tip, I have done as you said , problems arise with 1/8 to 14 and 16 gauge . Trying to get some penetration on the 1/8 with out melting the 16 gauge . Now on non structural builds I have been using silicone bronze mig wire 035 seems to work well but not cheap. Still working as you recommend for heavier furniture .
@quickshot4050
@quickshot4050 3 года назад
@@bruced1429 here is another tip, try turning your machine way down, but turn the wire speed way up, I can weld 24 gauge galvanized at 10 volts and 150 ipm wire speed, you need to keep your gun very close tho, as if you don’t you’ll just be popping a lot. Also don’t be afraid to turn your cfh on your argon down as well.
@quickshot4050
@quickshot4050 3 года назад
@@bruced1429 oh and lastly if you’re still having some issues, if you can turn your piece upside down and run down hill. Gun pointed up.

In my very limited experience, this has a lot to do with cleaning! I once got to do a tiny bit of TIG welding on the side of a deep-fryer, it was full of oil! The outside had a thick layer of fryer oil baked on to it.... Probably a miserable hour cleaning off a spot a few inches square, down to gleaming bright stainless... then maybe thirty seconds making a tiny weld.

So I have a question I’m doing a lap weld on 14 gauge steel on 22 0:02 gauge steel. With flux core. My welder specs show @ 110v minimum thickness is 20 gauge and I am burning through, any suggestion? Or am I spinning my wheels?

Starting off at 00:05 ....welding "carbon" steel. PLEASE ......if you are going say "carbon" steel, then tell us exactly what the steel is because WHEN you say "carbon" steel, that infers the carbon content is over "MILD STEEL" carbon content .....WHICH IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BEAST!!!!
