In the shop this week working with some drop from the shop build. Doing a little metal fabrication and sharing my tips and tricks about angles and when real world doesn’t link up with textbook. During metal fabrication projects you will often find that the world isn’t perfect and the fit up is going to take a little more work than a math equation.
Here we are talking shop on metal fabrication techniques, metal fabrication tips, torch guides, building triangles out of square, angle finder, and using a cutting torch. Along with some fab lessons turned life lesions and ultimately building the start to some new pipe welding stands I’ve been needed that will make perfect use of this scrap metal.

You might try this (woodworker's tip): After you've got your your edge guide all set......take your protractor (the angle measurer) and check the angle the edge guide is set to. Chances are it's just a hair off. Bump it dead on. The comments below are correct. To make angles fit up to perfect 60°, 45°, 90° etc. you must be exactly spot on; even half of a degree will kill ya. Buy a better protractor, one with the biggest marked-out arc you can find. Machinists have protractors that actually have little bitty magnifying glasses attached to them. so they can read between the angle marks. Have fun. Awesome torch work.

As someone who just welds around the farm, I can’t tell you how happy I was to see your angles have gaps. I made a grate to cover the opening to a concrete draw tube that keeps one of our roads from washing out. I’ve never been so frustrated with cutting the angles to fit and I was using a saw. You made my day.

Am a certified machinist and a lawyer, nevee really welded all that much during while taking the course. So recently I purchased an arch welding machine, just as a hobby you know? Men I fall in love with welding all kinds of stuff, I recently manufactured a heater for my home, some silly guns, tables, gates you name it. What i've come ti learn during this 6 months is: welding is a work made on the run (sorry I don't know how to say it in English) you can sketch and mark as much as you want but everything ends up better doing the qeld on site, making adjustements as you go. Keep up dude this is an awesome craft.

The lengths of the cuts have to be exact. otherwise you'll get a messed up triangle every time. The tools you used are not precise enough to make it perfect. I think it's pretty freaking good final product all things considered.

Hey Austin, for 45 degree and 30/60 degree cuts, you do not need a protractor at all for absolute precision. A 45-45-90 degree triangle has equal width and length with 90 degrees between. A 30-60-90 degree triangle has a length of twice the width with 90 degrees between. So simply draw a line across your material with a square. Measure the width of the material. Measure from the line you have, along the steel for 2x the width of the material and mark a line. Then draw your diagonal and you have exactly 30 degrees. Don't forget to allow for the width of your cut. Also, to save material, every 30 degree cut you make gives you two pieces of steel with a 30 degree end, so no need to mirror them back to back. I hope this helps for future builds. Keep up the good work.

Ive never had good luck bending something like that (like building a headache rack) because when you bend instead of cut all the way through, it lengthens , which in turn opens up the joint and makes your side longer than the one you cut on its own. now I just lay out the angle and make one cut to separate the two pieces completely. That way i can make sure all the legs are the same length and the angles turn out much better.

I've found that if you will take a shot of whiskey, or drink a beer between each cut....the word precise is no longer in your vocabulary. It is replace by: fix it with a paddle disc, after you've over dabbed the crap out of all the gaps. It all turns out purdy, right after you paint it.

Hey A Ross, walking by on horseback I see yer problem and You actually gave the solution on your final try! When you show the first one and yo have the bend at the top, your margin of error is Not Cutting the angle you bent. You cut that one and gap closes and yer Good To Go! Math don’t lie, 60 x 3= 180 but the 1/8 thickness of material Not cut throws everything off. You solved it. I just put all yer pieces together! Thanks for yer goofy sense of humor, my Grandaddy and Grandmommy are from Oklahoma so prolly learned it from my Momma! Best, My first name is Ross so we iz related!

hey Austin,you do have an advantage over a lot of novices,the understanding of fabrication,the ability to see things how they might work completed,myself if I can't imagine it completed I probably won't attempt to build it,not saying that I couldn't,but to make a profit in a reasonable amount of time,I have to put it on paper and get it done.Some things I see instantly,then it's material list,a plan,then built.I'm always seeing in your thinking,it has to be heavy duty,that's more time and money,as far as a lifetime,that clothing business could be over in a few years,so that would be it's lifetime,weight cost money to haul,I'm always interested your projects,being a pipe welder for so many years,I will admit I'm not a fan of the UA,they are ruthless and very self serving,they will forget you exist in an instant.UGH!!

Hey Austin. This one actually quite simple. The gap is caused by two things. First, heating and bending the metal will stretch it. Second, the bend adds a radius (length) to the angle and thus creates your gap.

I find figuring out angles such as your try angle. Use cardboard cut templates to test fit the cut angles. That way the mistakes are not costly. Then when transition to steel it comes out correct. Something my dad drove home to me many years ago when I was learning to weld

Tube tends to de stress with heat which opens the angle when cut, cold cut seem to help while clamping material in place. Also get some scrap 3" flat and make up some angle squares to mark out on a flat surface.

Austin. Starrett no.491, thats the ticket to all your layout woes brother. I would advise a set. 24" combination square, 12" bevel protractor and a 6" center head. The straight edges are all interchangeable, makes layout extremely easy on structural members, pipe, tube and plate. They are extremely precise and very well built in the USA. Another excellent addition would be the 12" machinist level. Tools don't make a craftsmen but good tools sure help👌 Edit: ps. I'm not a starrett shill even though thats what it looks like🤣. They are quite literally the type of tool you would be proud to pass down to your grandkids.

If you're making alot of those its handy to have a mitre saw so you can set your angle once you figure it out and you can use a stop block to have the length every time. Cut all you need then you can weld them later. Its a trick I used doing carpentry for rafters but I assume the concept would work for welding. Sometimes making a few scrap is worth it to make sure the rest of your project has the exact same angles. There's a chart that goes along with the speed square to help figure angles. Its a PDF you can download and always have it on your phone.

Although the bending was fun, seems like it added a lot of error to the triangle. One thing I really truly learned is that when the artist guys out there do what you are trying to do, they do all kinds of precision measurements, shows me: builder cut, artists bend. Seems like a good cross cut saw or band saw is worth the $$.

Usually gaps like that are easily explained by the fact that a torch was used to cut. If you don't clean the cut to smooth metal and instead just knock off the slag you might get away with it, but otherwise it's near impossible to hold any tight angles. I would recommend investing in some cutoff wheels, maybe even an 8'' grinder if you don't have one. For thin wall tubing like the ones you're using it would go through much easier than even a bandsaw or chop saw and you save yourself a fair bit of headache in the end from trying to figure out why you've got gaps.

I have found (after many years of making mistakes) that a template is the best thing to use when you don't have that bandsaw or power hacksaw. Remember, every torch cut removes material differently. A template cut exactly to size gives you the ability to trim to fit before tacking. Plus it works on both sizes of the tubing. And don't depend on your protractors. Remember, you're making equilateral triangles, so the duplication of sizes is the most important consideration. Calculate the lengths of your long and short sides instead of depending on your protractor. Access to a CAD drawing program would help too. It would do all that herd work for you.
@chrisestill8825
@chrisestill8825 3 года назад
Keeping the 2 pieces joined is throwing it off a bit. You have to account for the length of the bend and those 2 pieces are not going to join perfectly at the outside point. This then makes the angle close up tighter on the inside.
@simplyorange8553
@simplyorange8553 3 года назад
I wonder if you didn't cut them all on the outside of the line, would the lengths have been more consistent and fit up better? Also I think the bending worked against you because it changes the length and angle from the cut pieces. Interesting project, and glad to see you were able to parse out some insights, as well as share them with us. Thanks for the video!

So a good trick is use the opposite angle. So for one piece in a join use your 30 Degree angle or whatever. For the opposite use the opposite side of your angle device for the 60 to get your 30 degree cutout. It won't matter if ones 29 and 61 as itll always match.

If your cutting angles to bend instead of just cut completely off and weld on square tube or angle you need to pull your measurement to center of the angle you’re going to layout then if it’s 1/4” thick then go 1/8” either side of center of angle then layout your cut lines. Basically take account for material thickness and you won’t have any gaps

That is a bevel square we use it in structural a lot since they don’t give us angles if a plate is sloped one way. So instead of a plate being layer over at a 45* angle our prints would call for a 12 on 12 slope. We would lay that out on our table and use the slope square to carry it over to the part.

You have to figure hinged take-off when you bend/hinge the metel, and subtract blade thickness of your other cuts even on thin gauge metel. For me it's just easier to cut everything then fit back up at the desired angle. I think there is some rule of thumb formula for hinged angles but I cant remember it. May find it in an OLD blue book from the 1980's

My english is limited, but I try. You mark and cut the first piece. Because you want to build an isosceles triangle the angle never changes. You clean the cut and mark the next piece from the 30 degree cut you have on your residual material. Getting the length right is important. So you have less cuts too. I would probably use a cutting disc and a scriber. If you put all 3 pieces side by side they should be identical.

Just did the same kind of cut with 2x6 90° corner (2x45). Could only get it right by scribing and cutting to the outside or drop side of the line with a cutting wheel on my grinder. Any angle has to be precise. Using a soapstone and a torch can set you off a degree or two and compounds itself with each cut. Your 30° marks the first time around should work perfect with the right cut. Love your videos! One more thing on the bent corners: The point of that cut has to be from the inside point of the wall thickness. I’m just saying, C’mon!

This makes me want to do a triangle. Just give me few hours (or days) to figure out where to use it, and I will post my first video.
