Not only does he probably have work himself that he has to do- maybe even a night shift since he looks proper dressed when meeting him- but his situation could also demand his presence elsewhere. Maybe he has a baby himself to look out for at the drop of a hat, or a sick spouse, or any number of priorities that take precedence over joining your neighbor for a late night wash. He probably would have offered to go with her if he could. We shouldn't be so quick to judge people, especially in horror where things are set up deliberately to make things scarier.
