A introduction for a power bank or "DIY board" that can generate the newer USB-PD voltages for power up to 240W would be interesting - haven't seen many of those yet.
@d00dEEE
@d00dEEE 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, DIY board strikes a chord with me. I've been on the hunt for a board with like 5-6 USB-PD outputs that I could put on, for example, a Mean Well 2-300w@20v power supply. I'd like to eliminate all the little wall warts on the various routers, switches, miniPCs and other junk in the lab and have just USB C for everything. (One can dream...)
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 6 месяцев назад
I have no use case for such power. My newest iPhone consumes 26W max (and I will not use this speed because I want to keep the battery for as long as possible and over night, I do not need speed). Where do you see the need for 240W?
@TylerDurden-pk5km
@TylerDurden-pk5km 6 месяцев назад
@@AndreasSpiess Laptops, power tools, solidering irons and bigger battery banks (including ones with mains output). Already today, laptops with build in GPUs can not be run through USB-PD at full power, because they need more than 100W under full load. DELL for example is or was using proprietary USB-PD extensions to provide 130W through USB-PD. I agree though, that it is not relevant for phones and tablets. PS: E-Bikes, Scooter, etc. may also be a valid use case.

Thank you for the two-part mailbag, Andreas! I understand it wouldn't work with 'flat' powerbanks, but for the chunkier types I wish there would be options for some units to be filled by the buyer with a bank of pre-owned 18650s. Often with those energy banks what we need is only to change the controller side to something up-to-date with the latest charging protocols.

Hi Andreas, nice things, especially the solding iron that stays quite cheap. I've seen (duno remember where) that paper ink displays have made a jump forward, as some can now display up to something like 1~2.5 fps, making them clearly usable for menus with a lot of sub-options - what I hope is to see their price will falling rapidly because it is very useful on battery powered devices.

Regarding power banks, it's challenging to find one that can output more than 20W while being charged simultaneously. Some disable the output, others restrict the output to only 5V, and some reset the output when a charger is connected. Could you test for that in your testing of power banks/USB PD?
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 6 месяцев назад
To answer your question, did the following test: With both batteries (not fully charged), I connected a standard USB cable as a 1A load. Both continued to supply power when I inserted a USB-C cable for charging. And both were charged with PD voltages (checked with a tester). 20W was not possible in this setup (the white has only 1 USB-C port)

On the blade, overheating can be a problem, too if you discharge 100W for a certain time (it switches off). Here, I do not have such scenarios. The capacity seems to be ok (I never was able to completely discharge such a battery before I had the chance for recharging).

@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 6 месяцев назад
None of the USB-C power banks I saw are good as UPCs (the same applies to power supplies, BTW). They stop the current at all connectors when you connect or remove a device at a different port. I assume, this has to do with their power management (they have to distribute the max current to the different connectors).

Beware - I bought a package of the PTS200 plus various TS tips assuming they would all be 100W tips running from my new Baseus 100W charger @ 20V. It turns out that only the TS tip included with the iron is 4ohms/100W - all the others are 8ohms/50W, which appears to be standard for TS tips. Ok, they work fine but I feel a bit cheated. According to a Pinecil wiki, it seems there are also 'short tips', ST which are 6.2 ohm/64W. Of course, none of the Aliexpress listings mention the tip power/resistance ratings :( [EDIT]: So where to find 100W tips? How well does the curve tracer control base current/gate voltage? Is it a reasonable transistor tester?
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess 6 месяцев назад
No, it is not a "complete" curve tracer. It only has two leads to measure current and voltage. Complete curve tracers have an additional cable to produce varying current of voltage for the base or gate. So you only can detect if a part works or not.

I can’t help but assume (probably correctly) that the cells inside those cheap aliexpress power banks will be low quality & have less than half the charge cycles, on average, than a higher quality power bank, double the cost.. probably worth spending the extra if you don’t want to lose a good chunk of mah within a few years & especially if you plan on a lot of heavy use
@AndreasSpiess

At 20000 mAh capacity, Baseus offers fast charging and 100W USB-C output. The power bank has two USB-C and two USB-A ports to charge four devices simultaneously. The company claims to charge the 16-inch MacBook Pro up to 36% in only 30 minutes. It’s safe to estimate similar, if not better, results for MacBook Air. If you have a 60W USB-C PD wall charger, you can fully charge the power bank in only 1.5 hours.

@@AndreasSpiess If you use a normal mains rectifying diode (for 50 Hz), I'm pretty sure you'd see a different path for the rising and falling voltage. Maybe not a huge difference, but I'd surprised if you wouldn't see a clear difference between a normal rectifying diode and a fast recovery diode. Why not try it out and see?

@@AndreasSpiess Phew... I began to wonder if there is a correlation between voltage to heating elements on soldering iron and degrees. Thanks for clearing that up.

Lots of Elektroschrott! Did you know that Migros subsidiary Digitec throws away 500 tons of virtually brand new electronics that had been returned because of customers being too lazy to read the manuals.

I did not know the fact and I do not believe it because I regularly purchase such products for a reduced price. They are usually opened, but still carry the full warranty.

The curve tracer reminds me of a Huntron Tracker that I used back in the 1980's. A quick google search show that Huntron Trackers still exist, but they are astronomically high in price (

This idea is very old. The sometimes used 50/60Hz from mains to create the sine wave. Then, the device was very simple. I wanted to create my own. But when I saw this price, I thohgt, I can use my time in a better way...
