Gator Navy was the real,Navy. I spent my stent aboard the USS Nimitz,CVN-68 BM-3. Just a drop in the bucket by comparison to Deck and seamanship! Bravo Zulu,Shipmate!
I was in those Landing Craft coming into well-decks in nasty seas - It gets really interesting... One day, I was on an LCU coming into a well-deck - the seas weren't too bad, but the deck crew, the guys with the ropes, have to work in a coordinated way with the swells coming into the deck, to move the ropes forward as the boat comes in, and ease up if the swell pulls the boat back If the crews aren't that well trained, well, it gets interesting. The ropes are nylon, and the have a small rope attached on the side called a "tell-tale', it is slack - but when it goes taut, it means the nylon rope is about to break. We saw the tell-tale go taut in time, and ducked as the nylon rope flew across the top of the LCU - fortunately noone was hurt. The danger in the well-deck wasn't dependent so much on the weather, as it was the skill of the deck hands on both sides of the weel dock.
@@BillinHungary where you on the east coast or west? I was in ACU-1 on the westa coast. And yes you are correct both sides have to know what they are doing those lines are dangerous we were shown a training video of a line braking and cutting in half a dummy. So you always had tobe aware of the danger. Cheers
@@SDsailor7 I was at BMU-1 long ago. I was a Lt. j.g. in charge of a BMU team. We were coming in with two LARCS two Mike-8 and the LCU last. That day for some reason I was on the LCU.. when the line snapped, it flew a cross the LCU but fortunately at a height well above personnel in the cargo area. The only damage was to the top exhaust pipe of our bulldozer.
I must have missed the hit. Couldnt have been much of one. I assume the water is pumped out with closed.exterior doors when under way. Otherwise that looks risky in rough conditions both for the barge and for the mother ship. There isnt a whole lot of margin between the static water level and the height of the next deck.
@@mabryfamily1720 Had one incident going into the well deck the lines where in the bits but a swell came in and pushed our LCM into the one that was ahead of us already tied up and we crashed into it only things damages were the life line stanchions. Fun times Ha!
I thought there was dumb sh?t that I did in the Army. This is blue ribbon quality dumb sh?t! What is the Navy trying to do? Are they going to load that small boat with cargo? Maybe there is a garage in the big boat to park the little boat. I understood life in the Army infantry years ago. This Navy stuff makes me think WTF.
That boat does carry cargo to the beach. It can carry tanks, trucks, supplies and even troops to the beach. And all of that is in the belly of the ship.
