Weller Special Reserve carries the original name, but not the original taste. The last of the famed Stitzel-Weller juice was used up a while ago. The original Stitz claim to fame was helping to pioneer wheated bourbon and aging whiskies a bit longer than the industry standard. The slogan “Stitz is the Tits” could been seen plastered on billboards across America. Then in 1972 the distillery was sold because White Claw Hard Seltzer was introduced to the American public, causing everyone to declare that “Claw is the law”.
Years later, Diageo decided to start bottling Bulleit whiskey there. Apparently, this new occupant didn’t sit well with previous tenants, because now the old distillery is said to be haunted by the ghost of W.L. Weller who floats the grounds asking employees questions about the hit television show LOST.
So yeah, basically we have a $20 bottle of wheated whiskey that now retails for over $100 because of the secondary market and Pappy Van Winkle hype. Mary wears an aviator hat just because, and Delilah gives an ice drop. It's a popular whiskey yes, but will we approve?
