A coworker couldn't remember the term sea shanty at one point, and called them pirate hymns, and I just felt like that was important information for the internet to have.

It's surreal to see this ancient shanty slowly enter meme territory because of some well-done TikTok collaborations. I grew up on all the old reels and shanties- some with lyrics, some without- and the Wellerman is a classic when it comes to structure and melody. When Little V covers it, you know you've broke it big in the modern eye.

I love how the pandemic has given rise to sea shanties, and not just the mainstream ones (like drunken sailor) but the more lesser known ones, and can't wait to see what this arc brings.

As someone who's been into sea shanties long before any of this got (snobby noise) POPULAR, I have just one thing to say. I'm glad more people are enjoying shanties now, I'm glad for the existence of pirate metal, and I'm sure the ghosts of 1800s sailors would be glad that some part of their lives is still remembered by the world.
