I’m so excited to share this video that I waited ages to film and finally have had time to edit! Wells Cathedral is famous for its “scissor arches” and its amazing Chapter House, and the stunning Lady Chapel. It is a beautiful building inside and out, and full of interesting details.
I’m very grateful to our “cousin” Mark Dyer for his expertise and generosity in narrating this tour! Our visit to Wells cathedral would not have been nearly so informative and enjoyable without him as our tour guide!
Next week I’ll share my vlog of Wells City Centre, including the Vicars’ Close, Bishop’s Palace, St. Cuthbert’s church and more locations around Wells. And stay tuned for our visits to some super CHEESY Somerset locations as well!

So interesting that this is more of an English design rather than French. The length is magnificent... you have to adore those long sight lines throughout. It's just a gorgeous cathedral! Probably my favourite cathedral in England. The chapter house and the scissor arches are so unique, and the church as a whole feels very harmonious. The Victorians also thankfully didn't alter it too much like many other English Cathedrals which makes it look genuinely medieval to my eyes!

I liked the monk so much that he appears again in next Friday's video which is a tour of the rest of Wells city beyond the cathedral. Great opening drone footage. A majestic entry you might say. Then at oh wow, 2:19. Mark, I want to thank you for the wonderful information you shared. You are a great guide and very knowledgable on the subject. Something I also loved about the old cathedrals we visited were the worn stone stairways as here at 4:31. The ceilings are just stunning pieces of beauty. So amazingly clever and a work of art. The Bishop's throne is just ( words fail me) stunningly regal. Oh Dara I could go on and on. The wooden carvings, the details everywhere, the windows. This cathedral truly is an architectural wonder. You patience, skill and love for the subject made this a stunning video to watch. Beautiful cathedral and Mark was fantastic with his knowledge, I certainly learned a lot! I too love cathedrals, churches, basilicas, basically any religious building. Going through them is how I learned about architecture, it's interesting to contrast the mainly stone UK churches where the main colour comes from the stained glass windows to the European churches in mediterranean countries where the colour comes from the frescos on the wall.

I visited Wells Cathedral this year, visiting most of the places inside, in your video, only I wish I had such an informative and interesting guide as you did to take me around!😦a truly beautiful and stunning building in celebration of Faith. Most surprised you did not feature one of the oldest “clocks” inside the Cathedral - the racing knights galloping around on the quarter hours - or the young boy above kicking the bell with his foot on the hour chimes 😊we liked to watch it so much we stayed in and around the Cathedral for another hour to watch it again 😄

I had a bit of footage of the clock, but I didn't think it turned out well, and I didn't have a lot of narration to explain it... so I'm afraid it ended up on the cutting room floor (so to speak). I always struggle because I don't want my videos to be too long, and yet I always have TONS of clips and photos. I always feel bad about leaving things out, and it seems I missed a gem when I omitted the clock! Thanks again, Dara

Very impressive, and great commentary throughout. It did seem oddlly incongruous through, the funny face statues, and the almost comedic sounding wood carvings we heard of, in such a solemn setting :) And now having seen this preview, and as i said in my reply to your question had I been to Wells, I'm definitely now looking forward to my trip more than ever.

I've got round to watching this one as promised. Very interesting. It is a truism that if you live in a 'tourist' location, you end up not doing the tourist things. I've never done a proper tour of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, only a quick look in the nave.

I sure learnt a lot from Mark as well... he is a wealth of knowledge! He even gave me a "best cathedrals" book so that I can have a wonderful reference for my future cathedral visits. I've been visiting the UK for over 30 years, but didn't really appreciate cathedrals until a few years ago. My husband being an architecture nut has helped, and then hanging out with Mark (a religious scholar) has brought another level of understanding and appreciation! Which I have not watched. after publishing this video, one of my long-time subscribers mentioned a Blackadder character referred to as the baby eating Bishop of Bath and Wells. So yes, there are definitely some colourful characters connected with the city, both real and fictional!

Just an explanation for Ian asking why the angels look like "starfish". In fact, these are not seraphim but "creatures" and there are 4 of them in the bible (the first creature was like a lion, the second was like a bull, the third creature had a human face, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle). And they had 6 wings each: "Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was studded with eyes all the way round as well as inside" (Revelation 4:8). So what looks like starfish are 2 of those 4 creatures with 6 wings. I hope my explanation makes sense 🥴

@@MagentaOtterTravels I enjoyed it very much. I've visited Wells Cathedral twice. The first time when I was 5 or 6, I got lost in the grounds in front of the cathedral! I can remember it to this day.

I would imagine St Davids is very small city, perhaps the smallest in the UK. I've spent so much time in Wales it's a bit of an embarrassment that I've never made it to St Davids.
