Fine with the new stadium, but they should've kept the towers. Most Iconic thing about the old Wembley. Could've kept the towers and made it into the entrance of Wembley

So much history just reduced to rubble. No respect at all. An iconic British landmark known around the world replaced with modern shit with no character. New dose not always mean better.

It is sad to see how the story and what was part of it have been destroyed. England was the birthplace of the most popular sport in the world and the stadium was the cathedral Wemblwy same as Pele said. I'm not British, but it saddens me that the people of London and England have lost this magnificent stadium, though old, he would have done better maintenance. But as I've said, modernity ends with the story was already written. London has many old buildings and at least have remained but it hurts to see how that stadium ended disappearing from the face of the earth without any CONSENT, ending the place where the champion of England was crowned in 1966 and remember that game in Colombia Vs England in 1988, in which Andres Escobar scored a goal head. It's a real tragedy. I hope someday to visit London and meet the city that seems very interesting to me. Greetings from Medellin, Colombia.

They should have kept the twin towers and incorporate them in the new projects. I'm not British but as a football fan, I was pissed when they destroyed the towers. Pelé once said: "Wembley is the cathedral of football. It is the capital of football and it is the heart of football"

@llpalm08

The problem with the old Wembley is that it was getting old and in places there was quite bad structural damage. I never went to the old Wembley myself as I was 7 when the last game was played there but from what I've heard from people who went there in the last few years that it was starting to get a bit run-down in comparison to top premier league stadiums. I personally think it would have been disrespectful to not keep it in the same place and still call it Wembley.

Few things anger me these days and I accept progress has to take its course in a modern world BUT the old stadium should have been left standing - A new National stadium could have been erected more central in the UK with infrastructure to make it accessible to all. Pop concerts etc would have still filled the old Wembley to have the best of both the old and the new - Whoever allowed this should hang their heads in utter shame - If Wembley Stadium was a 'Listed' building then that should have meant something - very sad to watch this :( I saw Speedway, England's home internationla's as a schoolchild back in the early 70's, Bon Jovi live so have very happy memories - Thank you dear old Wembley - Gone but never forgotten :)

Wembley needed upgrading badly not demolishing, could the pitch level not have been lowered and more tiered seating where the dog track was? Has anyone noticed how similar the Olympic Stadium looks or feels like being inside in the old Wembley, I've watched Rugby League there and enjoyed it.. But losing those iconic twin towers was gutting

Just so sad the old Wembley is no more ... these brand new stadiums are popping up constantly that they are not interesting any more. That old world charm, wonderment and history of Wembley should have been preserved, sympathetically refurbished and cherished. I know it's easy to say this - i'm not an architect, builder or the person who was in charge of the books! But i just know we lost something special. UK lost something special and the world of football lost something special.

Gemini yes mate - Highbury was a beauty of a stadium. The new one looks like a shopping centre or car park. Doesn’t stir the soul. I remember as a kid going to the old Highbury without a ticket and spending 10 mins with my mate outside just watching seaman in goal 😂 we then saw sense and saw rest of game from the pub. Real charm. Once the newness novelty wears off you realise something has been lost, particularly if you team had a winning tradition at that old ground. 10+ years ago I would look at a ground like craven cottage versus the emirates, and think it was an old relic. Now I think it’s gorgeous. Funny how time changes perspective

After England V Germany on 7/10/00 the last ever game to be played at the old Wembley I was so saddened to hear that it was closing and being demolished. As earlier that year I went to see England V Ukraine in a friendly part of mi 16th birthday pressie. I previously saw England V Chile when I was 13 on 11/2/98 but mi greatest memory before the Ukraine match was having mi pic taken beneath the twin towers it was a dream come true and the ground was the best ever in the UK by creating shock wins and memorable moments. Miss this ground so much gone but the legacy and memories still live and never forgotten!

yea because the new stadium didnt wanted to incorporate any patrimony or old element of the old stadium. this postmoderist argument of the arc is the biggest ever lie in the history of the architecture.

yeah, as an architect from Chile, i can't believe that they have built a complete new stadium, instead of making a proyect with the old one. example, incorporating the towers, and maybe the whole outside facades of the stadium. insist, the ne stadium might be great to watch football games, but as an architectural roject, is pure crap!

It is like the old White City remnant at Shepherds Bush which they chopped down for the new shopping centre. They should have kept it as it was iconic for the area and built around it. It could have been the entrance to the station or into the courtyard for Westfield.
@llpalm08
@llpalm08 11 лет назад
It would have been nice to still have had the towers in some way, I know that the position the towers were in is now where the royal box inside the stadium is but it would have been a nice touch to have moved them to either side of the end of Wembley way with some sort of bronze arch of the best moments from the history of the old Wembley. If you take away the arch from the new Wembley then it is basically a generic modern stadium from the outside.

It looked good on the TV. Before the FA Cup and many other events they would paint the tops of the towers not the rest just the tops as they would be seen on the television. The truth is it was delapidated. Many of the people in the stands would urinate against the back wall as you can imagine not to pretty. They should have saved the towers though
