This is how I decided to do the initial startup and break in my new WEN generator. This is not a how to video, it is what I did video. I am not a small engine repair professional or a small engine / generator expert by all means. I bought this generator for my own personal use when we have power failures so we can have electricity by using this backup generator on gasoline or propane.
I used the gasoline to run the generator during the break in procedure.
I used 10w30 Castro's conventional oil while I was doing in the break in procedure along with Marvels Mystery Oil and Seafoam. After the three oil changes/flushes, I used 5W30 Mobile 1 full synthetic oil and I put the unit in the ready for service mode. I did test it using propane.
Special Note: There was a RU-vid video where a guy had a dual fuel champion generator and he only ran it on propane. One of the issues he complained about was that after some time when he went to use the gasoline side of the generator the carburetor was rusted and he had rust in the tank from condensation. He stated this was from not using the gasoline side. I cannot verify this is a problem or what was the additional circumstances to cause the condensation or rust in the carburetor or in the tank. So just take this in consideration if you never decide to use the gasoline side of the generator.
Here were my steps.
1. I read the manual completely
2. I removed the shipping brackets and I installed the handle kit and wheels onto the unit.
3. I filled the engine crankcase with 1 ounce of Marvel's mystery oil, 10w30 engine oil supplied by WEN and added additional 10w30 Castro's oil to fill the generator to the appropriate oil level.
4. I replaced the factory oil dipstick a metal oil dipstick with a magnet on the end which I purchased separately from WEN.
5. I removed the spark plug wire and the spark plug and poured one teaspoon of marbles mystery oil into the cylinder.
6. I pulled the pull string slowly three times, I the pool spring a little faster two times, and at normal speed I pulled the pull string five times.
7. I replaced the spark plug and tightened it down according to the manual and reinstalled the spark plug wire onto the spark plug.
8. I put 3.5 oz of seafoam in 3.5 gallons of fresh 91 octane gasoline mixed it in the gas can and poured all of the gas into the gas tank.
9. I hooked up the battery, made sure the fuel selector switch was on the gasoline mode. I turned the gasoline selector petcock to the on position and I turned on the choke.
10. I turned the key on for a few seconds and then started the generator. once the generator started I turned the choke to the off position. The generator was now running.
11. I ran the generator for 1 hour with no load and then turn the generator off.
12. I drained the oil and cleaned the metal oil dipstick. I refilled the oil with Castro's 10w30.
13. I started the generator once again and ran it for another hour without a load and then turned off the generator.
14. I drained the oil and cleaned the metal oil dipstick. I refilled the oil with Castro's 10w30.
15. I started to generator once again and let it run for 2 minutes then I connected a few electrical devices to add a small load a little over 1200 watts. I ran the generator for 1 hour, disconnected the electrical devices and then turned off the generator.
16. I drained the oil and cleaned the metal oil dipstick. I refilled the oil with Mobile1 5w30 full synthetic oil.
17. I started the generator and turned off the petcock to the generator stopped. I opened up the carburetor drain plug to drain any remaining gas that was in the carburetor.
18. I connected my propane bottle to the supplied hose and regulator from WEN to the generator.
19. I turned the fuel selector switch to the propane setting and started the generator. I ran the generator for 20 minutes with no load and turn the generator off. I disconnected the propane hose and regulator from the propane bottle.
20. Other than filling the fuel tank up my generator is ready for service.
The manual does state that after each time you run it you need to drain the carburetor if you're using the gasoline mode. It also states to run the generator monthly for 20 to 30 minutes. and if you have long time storage then you want to drain the gasoline in the tank and disconnect the battery.

Great video... thank you. It's been my experience that when people have rusty carbs or tanks its because they stored the unit outside... I am fortunate that my garage is somewhat heated because my boiler is located there.... and I've never had issues like that with my power equipment. Having said that... I see people who leave power equipment outside, uncovered, in the elements... and are mystified when they don't work when they need them.

Thanks for the compliment on the video and you bring up a great point. I believe if you go through all the trouble of setting up a Genset you need to take care of it. Mine is in my garage with a cover on it to keep out the dust. Today is my monthly test. We just had a microburst that wiped out our town with 70 mph winds in the desert 7 days ago and I was glad I did not use it but I was prepared.

I fill my tank to the top with non-corn fuel, add stabil, some lucas, seafoam and some b12 (9whatever ya have on hand). I turn the fuel off and pull the line to spray some more b12 to clean and protect the fuel bowl and needle and seat. I did that lat october after Zeta and it started on the second pull for Ida one year later.

@@poppaluv that's great I love berryman's when I was a heating and boiler tech that's what we used to clean the carbon off the electrodes it's good stuff. I just used the fuel stabilizer and 91 octane gas but to keep me from getting lazy after running my generator I still drain the carburetor just to stay in the habit even though that I run it every month. It's good feedback that you gave and I'm sure it will help someone out.

@@poppaluv first.. brother... what is b12? Maybe I should be using it. Second.. I live on long island. There is no fule sold on the island that doesnt have alchohol in it... so what i do is empty the tank... and i buy "trufuel" from the big box store... it's pure gas, no additives. Its $20 a gallon ... so i put some of that in and run it dry again... then repeat the process till I'm confident theres no alchohol left in the tank. Then, if my carb has a drain, (some dont, they're old) i open that drain and empty the carb. But I've never heard of b12... is that a carburetor cleaner?

I think I've had mine a little over a year now and every month I run it for at least 30 minutes and once a quarter I run it through the transfer switch. I've had no problem starting it and I'm very happy with the unit. But also with any generator you got to stay on the maintenance which I do and run it at least once a month. Good luck with it I'm pleased with mine

I like your break in procedure, some will probably say it’s not necessary but I have the same thought process as you. The only thing I would do differently would be to run it under varying light load (low wattage and amperage) devices. This is my reasoning, any break in of a new combustion engine needs to be at varying RPMs to promote even wear in. the two enemies to a brand new engine are very high initial loads and constant RPMs. That’s why I would have plugged in 2-3 small items and switched them on and off to satisfy both light load and varying RPMs. I’m a huge believer in break in period for any type of engine. To give you an idea, anything that I buy that has an engine I run at varying and light loads and after an hour or 500-700 miles (vehicles) change the oil and filter. I just recently purchased a new 2021 Honda Civic and it has approximately 500 miles. Next week I’m going to take it to the Honda dealer for an oil and filter change, I can’t wait to see the reps face!! I’ve followed this religiously on everything I get, and have NEVER experienced a catastrophic failure and compression has stayed perfect even in high mileage vehicles
@Z71Garage
@Z71Garage 3 года назад
Exactly I watched tons of videos and read numerous blogs and tried to do the best break in procedure from what I read and watched. I installed the transfer switch about a month ago and June 1st when I did my monthly run test I switched over to the 10 circuits on my transfer switch and let it run for 30 minutes simulating a power failure and with my refrigerator and air conditioning unit that I installed the unit ran great and my watch was fluctuating. Now as you spoke about your car my friend has a 2017 Honda Civic that he bought new and now it has 238,000 miles because he commutes 120 miles a day he would gas it up and then give it to his wife and she would drive it to work which was about 120 miles a day. They did this 5 days a week and it was because of proper oil changes and maintenance at the car is still going strong. So correctly breaking in a machine and keeping up on the recommended oil changes and maintenance is the key to longevity
@jackwebb5917
@jackwebb5917 3 года назад
@@Z71Garage Absolutely, I think your small investment in break in items (dipstick, oil, additives) will pay huge dividends for longevity. I never understood how someone pays $900 for a generator or $25K (or a lot more) for a car but think spending $50 or less for the cheapest insurance you can get is too much money!! I like your idea of running synthetic. Do you by any chance have the PN for the Wen magnetic dipstick?

I have it matched with my transfer switch so in case of emergency I can have lights, internet , heating & cooling, cooking and water from my well. There's a few things that you can do, first possibly call the generator manufacturer and see if they offer one. List your model and serial number and if somebody has one similar to yours they might be able to help you out. Lastly, you can measure the length of your current one make sure that you get the correct thread pitch and see if you can match it up that way. Next day when I hooked up new propane tank, it wouldn’t start, tested the battery, it was over 90%, so it wasn’t that. I'm sorry you're having trouble with your unit. As with anything mechanical things can fail. Every month I run my unit for at least 30 minutes unloaded, and every quarter I run it through my transfer switch loaded. The next month I run it for 30 minutes on propane then I start the cycle all over again by running it on gasoline. So far mine has been working flawlessly and it starts every time by the key switch. I might be lucky but I know the first of the month I check the oil and run the unit. But with everything mechanical there is a failure rate that's why I run mine so that when I need it hopefully it starts and operates correctly. Definitely call the manufacturer and let me know how their customer service is. Again sorry for your trouble

I have not had to charge my battery since it was delivered. I run it every month for at least a 1/2 which the generator keeps it charged. If yours is dead you can pull start it and let it run to see if the generator will charge it. If you do not do monthly runs you might want to disconnect the battery. You can also get a battery tender Jr. For motorcycles /atv etc that will keep it fully charged or charge it when it's dead if your generator does not charge it up when running. .

I've started it every month except for two times and it ran perfectly for a half hour. I had used it with a power failure and it ran for 2 hours during the summer with no problems.

Interesting I never heard of that. I've worked on propane furnaces for 20 plus years and never had a problem. I do believe routine maintenance is the key to longevity. However I run mine on gas every month and drain the carburetor after I run it. Last month I got lazy and did not do it and just shoved it in my garage but in a few days it will run it again but this time spend the extra 3 mins and prepare it for the monthly storage right. The effort we put into our machines will be the expected outcome when we need to use them. Thanks for the comment I'll look into it I love learning new stuff

@@Z71Garage a propane generator will freeze up in cold temperatures from moisture, ask me how I know. Usually the first to freeze up is the hose from the valve cover that goes to the carb. Propane is good for generators, it has some negatives. Google propane generators freeze up. It’s either the hose or the regulator that freeze up.

I agree with you, however I run additives to my fuel and once a year the fuel gets drained and replaced along with a small fuel filter. I keep a spare fuel filter in that cabinet and run monthly checks for a 1/2 hour. I have noticed on my fuel indicator on the tank it has corrosion and some of the paint has faded.
