Thanks for showing this. Hattie is my Grandmom and Zelda is my Mom. I've eaten Wendish noodles all my life. Like Grandmom, I never get tired of them.

I come from the line of Hans Vogel and just fpund out about this culture. Thrilled. Eager to connect and learn more. Our family came from Brandenburg to Snohomish, WA via Montana and S. Dakota.

Thanks for sharing this. My forebears, Tienerts and Kokels, were among those who came over on the Ben Nevis. You have really captured the spirit of the festival and the community.

Our other group of Wends settled around Adelaide, South Australia. To the best of my knowledge, these were the only Wends to leave Germany. Don't be too surprised when your DNA test comes back and shows a huge chunk of Russian ancestry.

Those noodles are wonderful! I've heard that they were once wider and maybe thicker. That sounds like it would also be delicious! Would it be possible for Hattie and her team to create a second variety, based upon the noodles of yore? Maybe call them Wendish Noodles Classic? Where did I hear this? At the Folklife Festival in San Antonio a few years ago. From a woman behind the counter at one of the many booths. She inquired about those noodles with a wistful gaze and a sigh...

My Großmama made the wider noodles sometimes. They were delicious, indeed.

From my past experiences, I have to say that even though it's a Northern Slavic ethnic group, it relates more to the Southern Slav languages: Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian... And that really surprised me.

I read that after 1850 migrants were primarily economic. I imagine the Wendish were actually quite spread out through Prussia and central Europe? is Jaeshcke or Welke or Lange wendish names?
@KosovoReport
@KosovoReport 7 лет назад
Sorbian, they are Sorbs. wendish is a german slur for Sorbs but these people americanized and called themselves that
@soundknight
@soundknight 7 лет назад
is Sorbian the same as Serbian?
@KosovoReport
@KosovoReport 7 лет назад
Brian Cullen Sorb in Sorbian is Serb, so they have the same exact name. They descend from one Serbian people 1400 years ago, however the Serbian king Dervan's two sons fought, and one son took half of the Serbs to the Balkans, where the Balkan Serbs live today, the rest stayed in Lusatia, where they are called Sorbs and lived under germans for 1400 years.

By that time, they had been basically surrounded by German-speaking populations for centuries. Hence their German names Welke, Lange, etc...

Damn I remember hearing about these people being sold land that didn't belong to the seller. Slaves were still around, natives were being discriminated, and Mexican people would be brutalized. Funny how this culture is worth saving, but anyone that is POC culture needs to be thrown out in favor of white christian ideas. I still get told from Texas to the Midwest to speak English not Spanish. When ever I point out the amish people or these Eastern Europeans are speaking English, I am told to respect them and its just the way they are. The irony is glorious.
