Haha. Infuriates the hell outta me. Living in Thailand and I freaking hate when locals correct how I say English words they want me to say these words in their local accent.
Also another reason why Korean always "fix" their English is that lots of Korean words actually read like the English words but with Korean accent. For example, coffee in Korean is ko-bee, something like that
It's funny because my mom will say English words properly and then my dad will tell her she's being stuck up and just to say them with a Korean accent lol
Sm: "ok so the chorus everyone sings" *points to line* "now u go back and practice, Lookie lookie My super lookie loo- Wendy: "its Rookie" Sm: "ah yes that's what i said Lookie." Wendy: "no RRRookie" Sm: "yes LLLookie" Wendy: "No its R, not L" Sm: "yeah ahreh lookie" Wendy: *smiles im so done* "yeah ok sure lookie"
One Of These Nights and Ice Cream Cake are Korean songs too but Wendy still pronounced "Baby one of these days, one of these years..." and "A vanilla chocolate honey with a cherry on top" properly.
BuyCowboybyfx OniTunes Hmm you're right. Didn't think about that. Since R is pronounced L when it's at the beginning of a word (in korea ofc). Maybe they tried to make it appeal more to koreans since the popularity of the song is especially important in korea? Not sure tho
Wendy: **Speaks English** Red Velvet: **Nods vigorously** J-line: **Speaks Japanese** Twice: **Nods vigorously** Lia: **Speaks English** ITZY: **Nods vigorously** RM: **Speaks English** BTS: **Nods vigorously** (Yes, I know that their english is pretty good. Get off me.) Blackpink: **Speaks english** Jisoo: **Nods vigorously** (Yes, I know she understands english well.) Edit: Me: **Alone wondering why the English lyrics don't change for Japanese versions**
that's true actually.... I'm a Filipino and a native cantonese speaker and sometimes i have to speak with some local accent english(in Hong Kong), which is really hard for me to correct my accent back to normal, since i have been doing this when i was in elementary. 2ndly, I'm learning to speak in American accent recently, and one day while I'm talking with my mum( we used to speak eng instead of tagalog....), she sometimes got confused of what am I saying, then I no choices to switch to tagglish for her to understand lmao XDD. F my life
Lucy Vang so true.. my mum tells me her old Malaysian friends can speak good English and I'm like ok cool and I speak in my " British " asf accent English and they look at me like they've seen a ghost and ask me " what? " or I don't understand and ask my mum what I'm saying or ask their other friends -_____- MOTHER I THOUGHT YOU SAID THEY WERE FLUENT then I speak in a Malay Hokkien accent and they understand xD god DAT ASIAN LIFEU
ikr! It's so funny, and so real! I'd love for them to keep exploring the two accents until a. They might actually start to get it! or b. Wendy smashes their face in... :)
why somebody was mad at Lee Teuk, even called him stupid? it's obviously he was teasing her. that's what he always does - teasing his little sisters. you guys got no jams
Lonley asian who loves screamo I do. I've been speaking English since childhood and I honestly talk better with an accent but sometimes I just have to let go of it so other people could understand! @_@ I remember one time getting mocked because I pronounce 'truck' like 'trock' but when I started saying 'TRACK! TRACK!' they finally got it @_@
밍Ming ikrrrrrr AND IM SAYING IT PROPERLY TOO BUT THEN MY MOM MAKES ME FEEL BAD ABOUT IT. I can no longer say English words with my Korean without adding an accent
I love how they always go "ah! why didn't you say so!" after she basically completely butchers the pronunciation lol. But it's the same in all languages. People modify English names and words so everybody can pronounce it and spell it even if they can't speak English. Americans also butcher a lot of words of foreign origin.
Mσиαєgι X. 신호석 or when you go to France and try to order off the McDonald's menu which is mostly in English, and they don't understand you.... actually I thinks the examples you gave were absorbed into English much longer ago :)
Flatlander I'm french myself lol. But well in a way, all french people, atleast all those that had a minimum of education at high school and chose English as subject can understand when a person with an English accent says “Hamburger, Cheese burger” etc even if we pronounce it differently. And I think that even people who never had English class even once in their lives could understand because even if it's pronounced not the same way, we still share the same alphabet unlike in South Korea where the letters “R”, “V” and others aren't a thing and it's really way too different. Like “Red Velvet” is “Led Belbeteu” while French people will only pronounce the “R” differently. And the examples I gave became a thing really long ago, during like the 11st century if I'm not mistaken.
Mσиαєgι X. 신호석 lol well tbh I had this experience in Lyon 16 years ago trying order "chicken sandwich" and wondering why it wasn't just named in French... so who knows at this point :)
This is part of why knetizens dont love wendy but part of why i adore her. She doesnt fit into the standard of typical english speaking koreans, she isnt arrogant about her english nor does she play it up like most idols do.
wendy is so adorable!!.. its funny how people always make her repeat her words because its in english.. then she would ended up speaking in korean accent so peole may understand what she says..
lol.. when I bought some red velvet album in Korea I asked an ajhuma in the store "Is there any Red Velvet album?" she didn't get what I was saying... i said "Red Velvet" "Red Velvet" "Russian Roullete" for more than 3 times and then she finally got it and said "Ahh... Redeu Pelveteu" ...
I remember in the first grade I had a Japanese friend and he kept saying let's go to 7-11 to get Sloppys. I was like "Sloppy Joe's"? It took him like 20 tries for me finally understand he meant Slurpees.
Just wanted to leave a comment thanking you for this video. I came across this on reddit almost 3 years ago and I thought it was very charming and funny, which led me start watching other funny Red Velvet videos and variety shows, and then eventually fell in love with Red Velvet and their music. Red Velvet has become one of very few kpop groups that I actually follow and on average I listen to Red Velvet songs for 8 hours or more everyday (I'm being conservative and it's probably more like 10-12 hours). In February 2019 I went to my first concert ever, Redmare in LA, and I regret not being able to go to more Red Velvet concerts because I loved it so much and is one of my most precious memories. I hope to one day see them live again. ❤️💛💙💚💜
This is literally me lol. I ordered a coffee drink at a Starbucks in Seoul once and I asked the lady for whipped cream in perfect English and she was like, "excuse me?" and after repeating it the regular way several times, I finally gave up and said it with the Korean accent, she was like "ahhh okay, got you :)" lmao
Well they’re just pronouncing it in Korean way. Like for example the word roulette is French but English speaking people don’t pronounce it the French way
