In today's video I am turning a piece of wenge, a dark central African hardwood known for it's distinctive stripped pattern.
While highly abrasive this beautiful hardwood is not overly difficult to turn and while it splinters easily, with care it can be given a beautifully smooth and glossy surface with just an oil and wax finish.

Hi, Are you adding a "stain" to the wax? If so, will any stain do? Like a Varathane wood stain? BEAUTIFUL WORK! I have an "espresso" color Varathane stain on hand. Thanks!

No stain, its just beeswax and some boiled linseed oil mixed together. Wenge is a pretty dark wood on its own and probably wouldn't show anything but a pure black stain anyway. I also think a danish oil would also produce some nice results with wenge.

Awesome bowl mate, your explanation was also wonderful. I like the shape and the finish on this piece of Wenge, looks like an oily wood but also dusty... makes no sense. Keep on turning. Cheers, Bluey 👍

Might look oily but it dries out and can become very splintery particularly if you cut too hard or quickly but it is a nice wood to work so long as you take your time with it.
