Arsenal have had an amazing season. Arteta accrued 89 points but it still he had to watch Manchester City and Pep Guardiola win the Premier League. My question though, does the BEST team in the league always win the league?

My question, does the BEST team in the league always win the league? I think not. Liverpool's 97 point side were a better side than City. Am I right?

The league winner is not necessarily the best team. But ManCity is indeed the best team this season. Look at Mourinho’s Chelsea. Tactically not very complex, just parking the bus like a small team. Players are not very good at football. Not half as skilful, tricky, silky or tekky as players in many other teams. They are just athletic and physical people who can’t play football. But yet, they somehow win trophies. Sometimes luck can be a huge factor.

Football has a significant element of luck. Just look at the UCL winners of each season... I'd say only 50% of the time does the best team win it. Cup football is certainly more luck based, but even league football is effected. If you win it by 5+ points, you almost certainly deserve it. If its 0-2, there's way too big of a luck factor to attribute it entirely to skill.

I’m an Arsenal fan and the table doesn’t lie, h2h and stats tells you that the gap between the two clubs is very small and it’s just how they handle the very fine margins, but the most important gap is the points one! So, well done City! I’m optimistic for next season because I know Arsenal can still improve a lot and I think City will be stagnant in their progression! I think we need to win next season before Pep leaves just for the achievement of beating Pep to the league, but if he does leave after next season we’ll have all our players on their prime so there’s a lot to look forward to if you’re an Arsenal fan!

Learn some basics about randomness and probability. It's highly possible that the 'best' team doesn't win the league. Counterpoint to silverware being better than qualifying for CL... No opposing fans have any respect to Arsenal when they won the FA Cup, in fact they just said they won an insignificant cup. At the end of the day, European cups and the league cup are what a team is truly measured by. These other cups are essentially bonus points, but if you don't win the league or CL they're virtually meaningless by themselves (in today's game, I know historically they used to be held to a higher value). Like is anyone seriously going to say their team won a double if they only win the FA and EFL cup (assuming they are a top 6 club)? Arsenal fans would be laughed off by other fanbases for that being their version of a "double".

@danielpayne7192 It's very possible for the best in a competition to lose. Sorry, don't put the Europa League above the FA Cup. The best teams in the FA Cup are better than the best teams in the Europa League. Here's something to consider, if H2H doesn't matter at all in determining who is better over the course of a season, then you pretty much could say CL isn't an accurate indicator of who the best team in Europe is at all. Call it what you will, but American sports that have a best of 7 game series typically find out who is truly the best team in the league because it forces teams to play H2H over a long enough sample size that luck really isn't a big enough factor in determining who's better.

Arteta dragged Unai Emery’s 12th place team up to 8th twice and won an FA cup with them, and then a year later turned the youngest team in the Premier League into the only competition for the eventual Treble winners in two consecutive title races, the last of which came down to game week 38. Arsenal have been sensational because we ignore man city, knowing they're consistently amazing that we take them for granted -- "there they go again". But the best team DOMINATE games, either in terms of possession, offensively, or defensively ,and always look like they're SCORING and clinching the win rather than not. Arsenal for me have secured the defense. but they lack AGGRESSION in attack, , and consistency in maintaining attacking possession and winning possession back. Those two areas they DESPERATELY NEED. City can do that even against teams like Real Madrid. That's how they're winning it quite convincingly, despite the margin.

Silverware is important in history books (and in fans banter) but really, it's all about experience and emotion. When season gave you pleasant experience, it was a good season. A Carabao cup won't make it for a miserable season, with an year dominated by negative emotions from bad games. Does it matter that Liverpool made 97 points, when they lost at the end - yes it mattered to their fans. It was amazing season for Pool. Arsenal last two seasons gave the fans a lot better experience than the miserable years under the late Wenger and the transitional period under Emery, Ljungberg and the beggining of Arteta. Silverware goes for the record, but after decades it means nothing, because there are no fans who witnessed em. Aston Villa dominated the English football in the end of the 19-th century and the beggining of 20-th century. They had won the first tier in that period more times than Chelsea in their entire history. So what? Will today someone argue Villa are bigger club than Chelsea, have more fans and etc. If only silverware matters, why fans of more than 90% of the clubs watch game after game, knowing, that there is no realistic chance of winning any kind of silverware? We have 3, you have 4 - it's all just a banter matter. We know how often silverware is decided by blind luck, or bad referee decisions or whatnot... So if it is a bad or good season is measured only by how we are remembering it and after we stop remembering it - it doesn't really matter anymore...

Arsenal did the double over Leicester City the season they won the league, but finished 2nd because it’s in other games, the ones we should win, where we throw it away.

There's no question Arsenal has done well but if it doesn't win the Premier League title then it's not good enough. If Arsenal really want to win the Premier League then they have to out do City in everything including earning more points and go on a massive win streak of 19 games to have a chance. Winning more games and have the tightest defense isn't enough if City have more points than Arsenal. Have some standards Arsenal fans and demand greatness and only then your club will end the 20 year wait for the Premier League title.

And I deserve a million pounds, we can both say pointless statements. If they deserved it they would of won it, this is elite sport. They finished below 90 points too which is poor by recent standards

Deserves has nothing to do with it from an Arsenal perspective. City didn't lose a game after 7 December. Went on the longest unbeaten run in the history of their club. They are inevitable unfortunately.

"Tell a lie enough times and you start believing it yourself" Arsenal played very defensively against City at the Etihad, but they never played for a draw. They always tried to win the match and Arsenal had some good chances they should have slotted. Arsenal know how city will play against them, hit them where they are vulnerable. City is better than Arsenal at many things, but especially winning the ball back. Since Arteta trusts his defence he went with a counter attack approach, laying mostly back then not really trying to win the ball back just letting city lurk around. Then have a very sudden press that might catch them of guard which it did. It was a gamble, but so is every match when two teams like this face each other. Did it end up being the wrong call? You could say that considering City won the league, but it was the first time City had not scored at home in a very long time, so I'd say that is a feat in itself. My view on this whole "Better team came second" is that the team who gets the most points deserve to win the league, simple as. Arsenal might have been the "better" team throughout the season which I would arguably agree with, but Arsenal didnt deserve to win it, City did because they got more points. To every Arsenal fan out there, just be glad with the amount of points you accumulated. There is not a single sign of the team declining in any way shape or form, only signs of improvement. Just look forward to next season, and be happy you are going into almost every match expecting a win. Not everyone is that fortunate.

Not sure how this is even a debate, if football and life in general worked with rhe principle of "You get what you deserve" Then maybe but it doesnt. Did Arsenal get more points than Man City...No. So by that definiftion/outcome they didnt "deserve" to win the league. Its a simple way of looking at it because its that simple.

The best team is the one with the most points at the end of the season. Even in a situation where somehow another team takes the full 6 points off the top team, that team is still not the best team. You can have arguments about which team you would prefer, and that's fine and good, but ultimately there is only one measure each season of the best, and thats the most points after 38 games. Now comparing teams from different years, well all bets are off. Total points from say 96-97 have nothing to do with 23-24, and its just a fun argument at that point.

Agree 100% with second sentence and disagree with your third sentence for the same reason! The small sample size and noise in the system is precisely why we can almost never say the team that wins the league is the 'best'. Your argument for not being able to compare between seasons also applies within seasons! I've not done the calculations but I suspect only a team that wins the title by Christmas i.e is about 50pts ahead of all the rest can be considered the best with a high degree of confidence
@jayinATL
@jayinATL 13 дней назад
@mattkirby8699 you make solid points. I still stand by the discrete outcome of 38 games and the points total. There is tremendous deviation within that. Seasonal ups and downs. Vagaries of VAR. Injuries. All part of it. All ultimately boiled down to the points total for me. Maybe not for you. I enjoy your line of thinking, though. For example, if the question was "if your life depended on it, what team would you pick as your champion to win one match?" Well, I think it's fair that while the league winner would get chosen alot, probably nowhere near 100%. So is that what people mean by the best team? Maybe.

This is such a silly premise. The table doesn't lie. City were the best team. They have won 4 league titles on the bounce, multiple trophies year in and year out, and 4 trophies won this year (assuming they win FA Cup). This Arsenal team did not win the league and only fought on 2 fronts, having given up the domestic cups. Yet again, Arsenal didn't win a single trophy. City is simply miles better.

Man City deserved to win the league title this season - you can't fluke the title. In the last 2 seasons Arsenal should have won and it was , both times in their own hands. Arsenal lost 2-0 at home to West Ham , and 2-0 at home to Aston Villa It's small margins. Man City didn't run away with it. It wasn't a procession. They probably wouldn't have lost those 2 matches that Arsenal did. And yes I know that Arsenal lost 5 matches in total in the league this season.

Rory should switch to be an Arsenal fan boy. Best team has to win. Period. Their best team in best season had zero trophies yet didn’t get into any of the other league finals ? One of Chelsea’s worst seasons - 6th, in a cup final and FA semi final. Also zero trophy. Best team of Arsenal = bad team in bad season of Chelsea.

@Jkev24
@Jkev24 13 дней назад
The best team isn't decided over 82 games in other sports. Personally, I always prefer playoffs, but not in small sample sizes like we have in Europe. It would be really interesting to see who would win in a best of 5 games. Not realistic since that would just be too much football to add to the schedule, but if you shortened the season and added in a playoffs, you would definitively figure out who's better. It's the difference for optimizing your squad to put up as many points over 38 games vs optimizing your squad to beat your opponents in a best of 5 series. Like let's talk a hypothetical here. Say Arsenal and City played in CL and Arsenal also knocked City out of the CL ontop of taking 4 points in the league from them and just finishing 2 points shy in the league. It becomes way trickier to say City were the better team in that context when they simply got outplayed everytime they faced Arsenal. Now clearly that didn't happen, City imo are the best team this season, but I think there's scenarios where the best team doesn't win the league. It's really more nuanced than simply the best team always wins the league. Sometimes you just get lucky by running into opposition that gets injured at the right moments.

The league table doesn’t lie. KDB is a better attacking midfielder than Odegaard. Foden is better than Saka. Haaland is a better goalscorer than Havertz. Gvadiol is better than any of our left backs. There’s not really a position that Arsenal is obviously better at? Man City are the better team.

City desered to win. Over 38 games, they have injury to let players throughout different periods and they won last 9 streak games. I dunno wat else can I expect frm them. As a gooner fan, I think we need 100 points to win becoz when opponent come close, City lup their gear again. They always do in such as way that it is just enough to win the 2nd spot team. Nevertheless, I am proud of this team n this club. Nvr experience such for 20yrs.
