The 7900GRE is artificially limited. The card is allowed to pull only 260W at stock, when the nearly identical 7900XT is 320W TBP and still demanding more. VRAM is also limited to 18Gbps, despite the fact the memory chip itself is rated for 20Gbps. It seems as though the AIBs are also not allowed to alter anything spec wise besides power limit.

You should also note that 7900xt has 1 more chiplet(?) while having similar total cores as GRE, so there may be diminishing returns of how dence should chiplets be packed and don't forget about temps ~23% power difference feels to be a big limiting factor, but looking at temperatures, higher chiplet density could cause overheating which is why AMD limited their reference model to 260watts

Not just that, but he is the only channel that did it properly to begin with. Comparing an AIB OC 7900 GRE to a reference 7800 XT, like other channels did, and coming up with +15% +20% improvements is misleading and scammy as hell. If anything, it's the other channels that should make clarification videos explaining their garbage, unfair data. Like for like comparisons should be a standard, period.

I noticed the GRE in your tests being slightly worse than in what some others found, and didn't find it to be a problem -- you were explicit about testing the reference models. This update is thus an excellent addendum to an already good review. It would be interesting to see how much the 7900 XT benefits from an AIB treatment as well, but you obviously can't test everything.

The problem with those other reviews is they ARE using those OC AIB cards but aren't mentioning that they aren't even close to MSRP. Nitro+ cards usually cost 10% more while not being 10% faster, making them a worse value. I find it disingenuous for those other reviewers to claim $550 when they're using the Nitro+ cards that sapphire sent out.

I expect that the bulk of differences in review results can be attributed to game selection. GN had better overall results for the GRE, but their game selection for testing is wildly different to HUB. So how do consumers proceed? Average the averages in the reviews! Personally, I put more stock in the game types than the averages - I don't play competitive titles, I play single player RP style games. So I look for performance in that category. Good on you Steve for this re-re-review. Your integrity and commitment to fair results is commendable!

I guess, the game selection, but if you look at the Digital Foundry video, in Plague Tale Requiem 1440p Ultra, the GRE is 9% faster than the 4070 Super while in the HUB video the 4070S is faster. In Cyberpunk in DF's video the GRE is faster than 4070S, while in HUB's video they're basically on par. So it's always crucial to watch many reviews if you're planning to buy a GPU. Even when HUB tested the Nitro+ version, their results are still different than GN or DF, and the conclusion is different too...

I find the GRE to be a very strange product with how they've nerfed the memory to hold back those 80 RDNA 3 compute units. It's like it behaves more like an overclocked 7800XT with 60 CU's than and 80 CU card a lot of the time.
@shaun1243
@shaun1243 8 месяцев назад
Agreed. It's an odd choice to nerf it like that. The GRE should be on the heels of the 4070 Ti Super. I do wonder how much influence the 18Gbps memory has when you consider the 64MB of infintiy cache, which is identical to the 7800 XT. I think they should've at least included another 20MB or so of cache if they wanted to keep the memory down at 18Gbps. Wouldn't make up for it entirely, but it'd make more sense.
@timiko4
@timiko4 8 месяцев назад
@@shaun1243 but you can't just `include another 20MB` of cache without retaping and refreshing N31 chip or at least MCD part of it (totally not cost efficient doing if for one card, this stuff usually doesn't change through generation) you have 16MiB cache per MCD - so 7900GRE 4 active MCD (256bit) - 4x 16MiB = 64MiB 7900XT 5 active MCD (320 bit) - 5x 16MiB = 80MiB 7900XTX 6 active MCD (384 bit) 6x 16MiB = 96MiB

It's not "mistakes made" if two products with the same label are substantially different. But certainly this is a product that has potential to be of interest based on the die, even if there are multiple versions with great variation. You could argue that the VRM differences on the 4070 Super are also exactly the same "problem" in that you have some that can clock to near Ti spec, and others that are artificicially restricted with actually worse VRM's than the stock 4070. If the AIB overclock versions of the GRE are close to the 7900XT version, then they're almost a totally different product, and that needs addressing. Thanks for coming back and doing this. I'm sure you REALLY wanted to come back and do this all over again :) Content is king.

Actually the 7800XT is now worse value, Digital Foundry got it right. If the GRE is 8 10% faster and it s just 10% more expensive, then it s quite fine since the higher up.the stack you go, the more premium you expect to pay against a lesser model. Honestly, the waiting game is always a losing one. There will always be more hardware coming out that outdoes whatever you can buy now. A good deal at a good time is something you should be content with and proud of. I got my 4090 for 500 less than I usually see them go for because PNY models aren't very popular here. I am on a clock too, but I'm glad I got that good deal halfway through last year.

Thanks for listening to your viewers. Your reasons for originally only testing the stock card make sense, but the OC models are what most people are going to be using, so it makes more sense to test and compare those. It's also relevant to note that nearly all of the 7800 XT OC models are more expensive than the MSRP, but there are several OC models of the 7900 GRE (by Gigabyte and XFX) that are at the $550 MSRP. So, that changes the math in your original cost/benefit analysis quite a bit. With the increased performance of these OC models, as well as future improvements with OCing ability once AMD removes the OC limitation "bug", the 7900 GRE actually makes as much sense as the 7800 XT right now, especially for someone upgrading from a previous generation card. Personally, I currently have a 6800XT. I haven't been able to justify upgrading to the 7800XT with the minimal (if any) improvements in power. But I also haven't been able to justify the huge cost of the 7900 XT. But the 7900 GRE hits that sweet spot of just enough improvement for little enough cost to enable me to justify it, especially with one of the OC models, which is on its way to me right now. It's going to be interesting to see what happens when AMD removes the OC limitation "bug". It would probably make sense to do yet another review update after the next Adrenaline update.

looks like a great card. I saw Daniel Owens review where he it put up against the 4070 and he was reporting a 10-20% range of improvement over the 4070 and even leading much of the time with ray tracing. [ He mainly focused on realistic use case settings for those cards. Light ray tracing loads that would get you playable framerates of 60 or more. The 4070 took a big lead with something like overdrive mode in cyberpunk , but it was still 30 fps vs 20 so kind of irrelevant as you probably would not use those settings with this class of card . Also the card he used came with two bios settings and out of the box it used the overclocked one so he left it on that] I am glad I got my 6900xt last year when the prices were dropping fast. It's good too see it is still comparable to the cards I would have been looking at this gen and I don't feel robbed. I payed about £100 more than current prices but have had this level of performance for a year already so it was probably worth it as I think the 2070 super I had would be struggling on these more recent titles

I saw/read a few reviews prior to HUBs and the overall gist that I got was the card is somewhat perfect for folks who want cheap lower end 1440p 4k gaming with reasonable expectations. The games also matter as some 1440p and 4k resolution settings mean the games will attempt to use all the vram and larger textures. I still chose the 4070 ti over the 7900 xt. yeah, 7900xt gets 10-20 more fps, but also crashes more in titles. (that still exists, deff in World of warcraft, can't even start in dx12) however, with ray tracing on, it absolutely dismantles the 7900xt. The 4070 ti is all around more balanced. And so far I've only seen like 2 games where the 12gb is a problem. But there are also games where the built in ray tracing is a problem for the 7900xt. So both have hard limitations that will present themselves. however, I know on the 4070 ti I can literally turn off one thing, or lower 1 thing and bam ram issue fixed. But on the 7900xt, you can't lower built in RT. You're fuc'd.

While currently OOS at amazon and newegg, $579.99 is the listed price for the Nitro+ version. That really starts to encroach on the $700 7900XT. I bought a PowerColor HellHound XTX on sale for $900 and do not envision a need to upgrade anytime soon. Especially as I upgraded from an EVGA 1080Ti FTW3. RT? don't care. GN and others all had different performance numbers from you and each other. It was nice to see a re-test and AMD just released a new driver 24.2.1. If you're one of the lucky few, MicroCenter has (had?) the reference 6950XT for $550. Too bad AMD can't/won't keep making the 6950XT and sell it for $550-600. I would guess the 80 CU GRE would have a few production advantages over the 7800XT and both the 7900XT/XTX versions would be better still. And for $$$$$$$$ is no object, the 4090.

Memory bandwidth is killing this card at stock. It’s almost a regular 7900 in terms of core count, but the slow memory gives it less bandwidth than a 7800XT and really drags it down in any game that is bandwidth-hungry. If it can hit the 19.5GB/s of the 7800XT it should pull ahead a decent amount.

The problem with that is the Nitro+ is NOT MSRP. A simple search of other Nitro+ models shows they're 10% more than MSRP. That in effect makes them TWENTY percent more expensive than the 7800xt making them an even worse value than before when they aren't even close to 20% faster.

if nvidia doesn't do it then they won't do it. there's no real benefit to them to lower prices, you're just replacing profit margin with volume sales which ends up being a wash. it's the same problem in the cell phone market where everyone is chasing apples prices instead of using it as a competition tool because consumers have been pushed into this idea that price equals quality and in very few niche markets that's true but that's rarely the case these days.
@defeqel6537

@@sirmonkey1985 volume would not necessarily be a bad thing here though, since the N6 process has plenty of capacity. This is because the 7900gre is a special case... AMD has heavily nerfed it in terms of memory speed, consumption and bus. Despite the strong constraints imposed, every increase in frequencies makes those 80 CUs better exploited, even when buying a custom card I recommend overclocking the memories to the maximum possible (stable)... even if it could perform even better if someone comes up with some firmware to unlock the latent power of the card, if this were the case things will get really interesting for the price.
