The Volvo 200 series cars will be the vintage cars, for us blue collar folks to buy in the coming years. Because the w123 cars are getting expensive to buy.

Air cooled Porsche 911:s were mostly hand made. Go and check a classic Porsche 964 or 993 and close the door. It closes like a bank vault. Even more impressive than any old Merc. They were absolutely superb quality.

The 140-series and W114/115 were both ahead of their time in similar ways. Both undervent real crash testing and had four wheel power disc brakes even in the base models. Volvo also did rollover tests with the 140.

I think 1970's/80's Toyota's are great cars, very reliable. Although Mercedes wins for style and strength, the older Crown's and Cressida's are also great cars.

Yes, they were good. That being said, one advantage that Classic Mercedes had/have, is that they were more analogue, and purposefully designed to be infinitely serviceable and repairable, whilst the Toyotas/Hondas/Nissans of the 70’s-90’s relied more-so on electronics and plastics.

As far as reliability and longevity, I think Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura was very comparable to Mercedes Benz in the 80's and 90's. Sure, in many ways they lacked the features and they certainly weren't as prestigious, but they were also very well engineered and ahead of their time and the fact that there are still so many being happily daily driven this many years later with very high mileage shows that they were also very robust. Even if they aren't as "good" in every way, they gave the working class options for efficient, easily repairable, very reliable, incredibly long lasting, and still quite enjoyable transportation they could actually afford.

This may come as a shock, but the early Renault Clio is a great contender for a car as good as a classic Mercedes. There are still tons of them on the road, parts are dirt cheap and very easy to work on. They are also very comfortable and drive like a bigger car.

I know that you probably don't like to compare BMW to Mercedes, but any BMW that came with the M30 engine was a dead solid reliable car with exceptional performance.

Only car I have ever owned that is comparable to my Mercedes is my 1949 Chrysler, the simplicity of the flathead 6 motor is ridiculous and has no problem keeping up with modern freeway traffic.

I once owned a VW Beetle 1959 for 6 years, during the time I owned it the car only broke down 3 times, the clutch wire broke, the battery ran out, & the alternator was flooded. the rest of this car is very strong. in fact I almost never open the hood, it's also happened to other air cooled car owner like mini Morris, when we open the hood to see engine bay it's always have a cobweb 😂. about a year ago i sold the car & got profit from my investment. I now have a 1978 W123 which is more comfortable but broke down more often & more expensive than the VW Beetle 😂 however I love my w123, I learn a lot about how cars work from w123s troubles.

Had a 1972 Volvo 142. To this day it was far & away the finest car I have ever owned. Had a W115 240D, W123 240D, W123 240D, W126 380SEC, W123 240D, W123 240D, W123 240D W126 560SEC, W123 240D. I think I got that right may have put in one too many 240D, but of all these fine cars, nothing could compare to the 1972 Volvo 142. Also had a 1977 Flathood Volvo DL (38 years old, almost flawless condition with about 68,000 miles). It’s fun to own & drive the 560SEC, the 240D is reliable, inexpensive, easy to repair & service, but there is nothing that can ever compare to the 1972 Volvo 142.

@@jd-py5nm It’s funny you say that, Lancia was very well known for reliability and build-quality control, until FIAT purchased company in the late 60’s. The Fulvia is generally regarded as the last “true” Lancia, as it was the last model designed by Lancia engineers, rather than FIAT or Abarth engineers, kind of like how the CX is regarded as the last “true” Citroën, being the last model designed before Peugeot purchased the company.

I owned 2 280 w114s and very much liked the build quality, although the M110 engines never seemed to be at their best with the smog gear, carb, and low power. I am pondering a Volvo 164 as an alternative to the114 6s. I had a VW turbodiesel powered Volvo 740, a very fine car that I would recommend if one is spooked by MB running costs, a good alternative to a W123 turbo diesel for one on a budget. For now, out of left field, I am resurrecting a 1969 Rover P6 2000TC 4 speed. The P6 engineering is intriguing and innovative, the spares situation is very good as P6s are loved in the UK, and it's a worthy challenger to the BMW Neue Klasse and 60s MB fours. Bad timing kept me from getting a 1961 Rover P4 100. The P4's overall smoothness (IOE 6 engine and manual 4 speed OD) as well a a rich interior beats a Ponton for me even if it is smaller. Yes I am a "car guy" as you put it. :) Yet I like MB's and am always tempted by a Heckflosse sedan- 4 or 6 manual or AT.

I had a new Volvo 245DL in NZ in the 70's and it was a good car - cavernous inside. But then I switched to Mercedes in 1978 - the 1st was a 1963 220S automatic. 5 others followed over the years and now I live in Colombia with a 1993 W124 300E automatic.

Growing up in South Africa we thought pretty much as you do. The older 100 series Volvo's were considered bullet proof tanks. And my family - too poor for Mercedes - always drove Peugeots. They were nice enough and we got some high mileages out of some of them but I remember two very serious problems. One was rust, the other was a servere propensity to overheat. They all seemed to be affected by this. When I finally had enough money to start buying Mercedes (used ones, none less than a decade old), it was night and day. There is nothing else that equals them, no matter what manufacturer you are talking about.

IMO some cars can come kind of close to Mercedes of this era - but all fall short - the BMW's with the M30/M20 engines were great - however they didn't have the same quality of metal when it came to corrosion control - I will say that those BMW's the E28's/E30's etc drove better than their mercedes counterparts but definitely didn't have the same caliber of build quality and suffered more from corrosion issues.

Help me with some advice about getting my 1968 240D back on the road. I purchased this car from a total scam artist in Texas. He said that it ran and it doesn’t. It has no compression. I would like to build the engine or swap with a later engine. The last resort is a American V8 conversion. Give me some advise. Will my OM615 swap with a OM616?
