Were we TOO Harsh On Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl? 

BDSP is a beautiful but stagnant remake of a game that was all about growth. By focusing obsessively on catching DPP’s magic, BDSP can’t do what DPP or even HGSS LGPE and ORAS did which was move the franchise forward in some meaningful way. They reversed egg times which killed competitive, the only thing they brought in was underground better rematches (which platinum already had at the battleground). A lot of follow Pokémon don’t work (some are nice), ramanas park is pointless since you can go to Max Lair or PLA for more legendaries, no 3D movements or raids or camp from SwSh, severe exclusion of the upgraded platinum content, and absolutely no changes to the base game despite it needing it more than any other game in the series.

My biggest issue with BDSP was that they did not include Platinum content, such as the dex, the distortion world, etc, and that the artstyle wasn't based on the current Main Game (Sw/Sh), like previous remakes were.

Yes! I think it is far too overhated. Is it what it could've been? No. Is it good for what it is as a faithful and fun remake of the original Diamond and Pearl? Absolutely! It's a good game. And fans were spoiled since we got this AND Legends Arceus in a two month span!

I didn't like bdsp but then i saw my little brother playing that game with the same magic that i played diamond with and then i realised that objectively its pretty good, we just wanted more

The original diamond and pearl are not good games. Therefore , if bdsp is the same as them it is bad. Platinum and Arceus are the only good Sinnoh games

I almost feel like they made Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl without reginal gimmicks, to test the crowds to see if it would be acceptable to go back to such a thing. (Unfortunately, I don't think many enjoyed that aspect). I must admit, for me, it was very nice. I rarely use the regional gimmicks, so to go back in time before such things became the norm was very enjoyable, (at least, for me). Regional gimmicks can be fun, but, they're also not really necessary. (I think Sword/Shield did it correctly, where you couldn't Dynamax/Gigantamax unless you were in certain areas, (such as a Gym), that allowed it).

No, I don't think so, I still consider Pokemon BDSP the very worst Pokemon remakes, those games were supposed to the definitive version of Diamond/Pearl and Platinum, but the remakes are just slightly better than Diamond and Pearl, and that's about it, Platinum is still the definitive version, which is so sad. Seriously, I never regreted to purchase any other Pokemon game, until that point, but I almost gave up from the pokemon games because of BDSP, thankfully, Legends Arceus bring me back, so, yeah, for me Pokemon BDSP are games that I have no desire to play ever again, and this is coming from someone that beat Pokemon Platinum multiple times.

These games feel like they were made out of obligation. FireRed and SoulSilver were archaic games that were missing key things that had been added to the series. Alpha Sapphire felt like they had a new story they wanted to tell in Hoenn. Arceus feels like an iteration on that idea - a new story in a region we are familiar with. My hunch is that they were worried that people would be unhappy / it would be a risk to let the only Sinnoh remake be so drastically different from the originals, hence outsourcing BDSP and releasing it so close to Arceus. They didn’t want to make it, but they felt that they had to so they could fulfill the expectation of “remake” instesd of solely a new story. I think that’s also why they were so hyper faithful - because Arceus was so drastically different. If their risk on a reimagining was to be so different, their backup safe game had to be as safe as possible

The lack of Platinum features was horrendous, but the real nail in the coffin for me and the reason why I lost almost all interest in any potential future remakes, is Gen 8's lack of connectivity. What is the point of having multiple games in a generation if I can't leverage the items and moves I've accumulated from previous games in that gen? Makes the games feel so incredibly isolated. The ability to transfer, not just Pokemon, but moves and sometimes items is one of the biggest reasons I enjoy replaying Pokemon games. Without it, nothing less than a major mechanics change like what's being teased with the return of Mega Evolution, will ever get me to buy more than one game a generation. Why would I play a gen 5 remake, when I can customize my team far easier with the existing games.

The thing that hurt me the most was the fact that I couldn't make the team I wanted. All of them were gen 4 pokemon, but some where looked to the post game. A thing they are not in platinum

I don't think Gen 4 is done yet. Cause for Gen 1 we already had "Fire Red and Leaf Green" and yet they still made "Let's go Pikachu and Let's go Eevee" as a remake for Pokemon Yellow. With that in mind, they might make another Gen 4 remake that focuses more on what Platinum had since bdsp barely had Platinum contents. I just hope that somewhere in the future they actually make one, since bdsp really disappointed me a lot.

No. We weren't harsh on SwSh or Scarlet and Violet either. They deserve it all.

I am disappointed that Platinum content wasn’t added (Battle Frontier specifically). Also, previous remakes did eventually allow you to transfer Pokémon not originally available in the games during the post game. The fact that I couldn’t transfer anything originally in Gen 4 seemed weird to me, seeming Fire Red/Leaf Green allowed Hoenn Pokémon for example. I was excited to do a play through with Alolan and Hisuian Pokémon in Sinnoh to get a new feel for an old adventure but I couldn’t do that like I could with previous remakes. Or to even bring my Sylveon into the games…the Eevee it evolved from was initially from an original copy of Pearl and it couldn’t go back into Shining Pearl lol. I don’t hate the games. But I do believe that there could have been more potential if certain other features were added.

While disappointing, i think BDSP being too safe cookie cutter remake of DP is by design because they weren't sure if Legends Arceus being too different from the normal formula will succeed. Also probably the reason why the two games were announced at the same time and released close to each other.

I think no and yes. They were (in my opinion) just about the same level as the original DP but with an inconsistent art style between battles and the rest of the game. The remakes aren't better than the originals and that should have been the goal. Instead we got what felt like the bare minimum.

no we were just as harsh as we should've been, if not not harsh enough, these games were phoned in and a big letdown, they could've been a MASSIVE high point for nintendo/gamefreak if they had really delivered on making a quality product, like you said, if only they took another year, we'd've waited. but there's no anger anymore at what we didn't get, just disappointment at what could've been.

My issue with the remakes were simply a matter of polish. There is no back button or labels on the Pokétch. It was hard to move in the Grand Underground to get away from Pokémon. Pokémon following you. Porting the glitches and bugs from the originals. Even though they fixed it, shipping the games with unfinished versions of the OST. The game was, at best, rushed. At worst, you handed an important remake to a team that made a Pokémon game feel like a fan remake. It felt unprofessional.

I understand where your coming from on it being confusing when they said re-experience the magic of pokemon diamond and pearl but I will say that I think they're target audience with that line was for people like my dad who played diamond and pearl once and never touched it again. He told me how much he enjoyed the fact that it was just like the originals and the older pokemon games and said that it took him back to older times when I was a kid and we played together. There are a lot of pokemon fans who just jump ship on a game as soon as the new one comes out but they have nostalgia for those games. I think that's who they were speaking to with this game along with the people who never got to play it in the first place like your friend.

During the down time you could cover the new Nintendo console. Real life topics out there like the Palworld case. Or a video on returning pokemon characters. Even ranking the best NPC. Who are your fave shinies? I could see you go 8 minutes on telling us how to play the games with added difficulty.

I think BDSP were fun games. Not perfect, but, encapsulate the pre-battle gimmick era well. Also, can we appreciate the the Platinum Fast Surfing in BDSP? There are way more good aspects in BDSP than there are bad aspects. I don't like thinking about what could've been. I feel it'd make me sound ungrateful for BDSP.

The amount of disdain I have for SV I would say yes, but they still didn't deliver a very good remake.

I generally loved bdsp, my first Pokémon game was fire red on emulator, and this game got me into the main line games, it has its issues, but it’s still great

I enjoyed them but I’m still salty about no platinum content. They already made a better diamond and pearl in platinum that everybody loved. I still occasionally replay BDSP and every time it just makes me miss a platinum remake. At least Alpha Sapphire had some (although controversial) new content to make it more different from the OG ruby and sapphire. Great video bro

Realistically , they'll remake gen 4 again in 2040

It had some good additions to the games.However, they should have added the Battle Frontier and things from Platinum. Game Freak didn't want ILCA to overshadow PLA. These could have been better.

When I want to play gen 4, I play platinum. When I want to play gen 3, it's emerald or OR/AS. This simple thing is it. BDSP is not better than platinum

I always thought yes but I also didnt like original dp much and these was during gen 8 life span where I liked swsh even less so that could be why. I think fateful remake of this level just dont work with dp with platinum being clearly better but did have more fun with it than dp. And while I do feel like people were yoo harsh on it, its only slightly because I really think dp is kinda overrated in retrospect because of platinum. And this game has dp in its dna literally so... kinda?

Look, I have nothing against a remake being outsourced to a 3rd party, if the new devs understand what the original game vision was, it could make those game the definitive edition of Sinnoh, but unfortunally, they failed and failed had. Its not just the missing content from Platinum, its the game polish that is subpar, having to download a day 1 patch because the game is incomplete, the chibi artstyle being to uncanny and worse than other chibi games released before and after and all of this points and more accumulate to make this game look kinda bad and it was considerate the worst pokemon game for a reason, before Scarlet and Violet, which I know people prob had more fun with, but in terms of performance is absurdly worse than BDSP. Overall, BDSP isn't worth it, but in comparison for Scarlet and Violet, we might have been a bit too harsh on it in retrospect.

No. Artstyle is ugly and unnecessary when there's normal models in the game that should've been what were used in the overworld. Platinum's existence is more or less ignored outside of the required Giratina and Rotom stuff, leaving out the enhanced story, QoL features, and modes like the Battle Frontier. Returning features like Contests and the Underground would neutered to the point of not even being the same. And that's not even getting into things like the game being incomplete (couldn't even get into the Battle Area) and needing a massive Day 1 Patch as well as the glitches. Also the Difficulty wasn't balanced around the forced EXP Share from SWSH, resulting in you becoming extremely overleveled and bodying most of the game, only to be met with the E4 difficulty spike, as they use competitive teams and even Smogon banned strategies like Evasion stacking, which may not end up being an actual problem due to Affection mechanics from Gen 6, except I believe this is forced as well. And since Platinum isn't the basis for these remakes, guess what FIRE Type trainer and his ELECTRIC Type buddy have teams lacking in their "signature" types? That's right. Flint and Volkner. Sure, they get their Plat teams as do the rest of the Gym Leaders and E4 in the postgame, but they should've had those to begin with and not their outdated DP teams. These games don't get ENOUGH hate. At least ORaS, while missing Emerald content, still tried to improve Hoenn with redesigned Evil Teams, the Delta Episode, Soaring, improved Secret Bases, and so on. It at least FEELS like they tried to make the game feel like the definitive version of Hoenn. They didn't even try with BDSP, a game that somehow manages to get outshined in a lot of aspects by Platinum from about 15 years ago. These games are a testament to how incompetent and lazy GamefrEAk has gotten. More so than SWSH. Now THAT'S an achievement. Making SWSH look like not the worst thing (besides Little Town Zero Out Of Ten) to come out of that company's butt.

BDSP was awesome and I will die on that hill. That game was for folks like me who wanted a new pokemon game in the old style but never played OG DP. Most of the folks that wanted all this new content got it in Legends Arceus. Remakes don't sell well, so clearly they split that experience into 2 games and combined they sold as much as any mainline series game. It's actually kinda genius. BDSP got me back into pokemon after dropping out of it WAY back when the gen 3 games came out. I didn't know anything about abilities, natures, all the new held items and such..it was a lot to take in lol. I just think that the ones that were harsh on the game just don't realize that it wasn't for them. They obviously weren't the target demo.

I know how poverty is i mean i come from Latinoamérica, i know how it is not to have nothing, ive been a pokefan for a long Time, i uses to own the originales on ds but somebody jacked my ds back in Middleschool (secundaria) after that i sold my Pokémon pearl, thats way i bought a switch lite cuz it was cheaper to get on this side of the planet after buying my switch lite i bought Pokémon sword and shield after waiting two generations, i know they were desapointing remakes, they were a missed oportunity😢many fans dislike the chibi style but honesty Pokémon Scarlett and violet were even worse it migth be nostálgia but when i bougth bdsp when they release i had that feeling that i was recovering some thing that i had lost in a time and then legends arceus realease and as a great Pokémon fan i really like bdsp, i rather play bdsp than Pokémon Scarlett and violet many fans hate bdsp i know but 4 its worth a lot to own all main line gen 8 games, i mean i never got to own a 3ds, after my ds got robbed in middle it took me 7 years to play pokemon again , i never got to own any pkmn gen6 and 7 games so thats why i dont have negative feeling towards my games and honestly Scarlett and violet desapoint me even more ilca didnt did a bad job aither those are my thoughts i come from down south i know how it is to suferr to buy a video game i used to sell bread in the streets of my town ay que valorar
