West Adams is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Los Angeles, with most of its buildings erected between 1880 and 1925. The neighborhood is known for its large number of historic buildings, notable houses, and mansions. It contains several Historic Preservation Overlay Zones as well as designated historic districts.
The Beckett Mansion and Thomas W. Phillips Residence have both been popular filming locations for horror movies. The Beckett Mansion was prominently featured in Evil Toons (1992) and Twice Dead (1988). The Convent (2000) and The Immortalizer (1989) also briefly featured The Beckett Mansion.
The Thomas W. Phillips Residence is most recognizable from The People Under the Stairs (1991) by Wes Craven.
Craven has stated that The People Under the Stairs was partially inspired by a news story from the late 1970s, in which two burglars broke into a Los Angeles home, inadvertently causing the police to discover two children who had been locked away by their parents.
