I played Bass in a blues band called Sneekers with Lindsay Wells, Gary Green RIP, Ron Parker RIP, Howie Smallman. We had a huge scene at the Mossie Park Hotel for 4 years then and equally long stint at The Orient Hotel in Fremantle. Great band, we hung around for 20 years and had the record for the biggest crowd at the Charles Blues Club. We were from 60’s blues rock bands playing in Clubs in Perth like Whiskey Au Go Go, a place called the Colosseum when I was 14. The entry age where we played was 21. We never went East because we were rooted here with kids and families. Great times great fun great music. Glen

I grew up in W.A. in the seventies and early eighties. I remember the blues thing well. Dave Hole came from WA. My brother was involved with a band called "The Bourbon Street Angle Grinders." lol Good to see so many Perth bands doing well. I used to pass the Dingo flour mill travelling between Perth and Bunbury, which has really grown a lot since I lived there.

Dave Hole is amazing and well respected and lauded in North America. Remember nostalgically his brilliant packed out shows at the Castle Hotel in Sorrento in the 90s and his classic 1st album , one of the finest original pieces of music to come out of WA. Still playing regularly around the local pubs.😀🎸

Venues like the Shents and the hotel that used to be across the road from West Leederville train station (I've forgotten it's name, it's long demolished and is an old age retirement home) would let punk and indie bands play, give them a chance. Now you get some swanky bar in Northbridge and they want you to pay to play or want the majority of the door..

Fifteen years on from this doco and the Perth scene is in tatters. Most of these bands are long gone. It was the early bands that built the foundation for what the rest took for granted and then sold out and disappeared. The only ones anyone looks fondly on from the 90s and early naughties are sleepy Jackson and jebediah.

A bundle of bands from this era and doco still live/record here. Of course like 18 years has passed and music has changed alot, there is less pubs and ;ess bands - more electronic focus. But you can still see plenty of live bands at The Bird, Ronnie nights, Clancys, Civic/Milk bar, Rosemount, Buffalo bar, Mojos, Seasonal brew co, Rodneys bait n tackle, Lyrics underground every week.

Early Punk was about being an individual, and the early bands had that in spades. Hernando’s etc was a great scene until the crowds started to believe the crap from the English tabloids that to be a punk you HAD to wear a leather jacket and safety pins, spit at the band and beat up the other fans. Look at the Sex Pistols BEFORE Sid Vicious. MUCH more individualistic. The next wave with the spiky mohicans was even more regimented. So good on Dave Faulkner for always following his own path.
@maryburke5423

I wonder why people go on about this so much. Ultimately the ‘uniforms’ did little to change what was happening musically, except for the very small scene of hardcore ‘oi’ punk bands, who didn’t really contribute anything much to music. And especially in Australia, the scene really followed its own path, remaining changeable and vibrant.

The unexplored point is this about WA and South Australia - the nexus between formal and popular music existed within the official education system and surrounding communities. What the yanks call College Town band scene. But that Education level is WHY you get the good music. I have to go. But this environment existed BEFORE this period you discuss, for a full two generations, classical and folk if you prefer those terms.

Murdoch uni! Had that tiny original social club when I was there late 80s early 90s. $6 to see the Go-Betweens. Small uni, tiny venue, terrific times. Pushrods band members went to Murdoch. $8 to see The Saints. I think it was someone from The Saints who said something offensive on stage and got a tub of flour thrown on him. $6 to see The Church, but Steve Kilbey had a few issues, too, if I recall. I loved it because it was cosy and you knew half the crowd. Unusually for me, was quite successful there at taking women home. I miss those days.

Haha, hilarious! "Blues bands what have they got to be blue about" well what have Punks got to be complaining about coming from Perth! Thats why the Saints couldve never been from Perth. John Meyer had more talent in his little finger then most of these desparados combined. The Triffids didnt make the album of the year for W.A.in 1985 but Trilogy who are a legendary band still here and overseas not that these elitists would ever acknowlege that. Yeah you tell 'em Rolf!

The same catalyst that produced great Brizzy bands like the Saints, Go-Betweens, the Colours, etc, produced great Perth bands. The Saints _could_ have come from Perth. Brisbane & Perth, 1970s & 80s, the most repressed, dull, constricted, conservative capitals in the country. Zero energy, poor venues, and repressive state governments stifling creativity and even more, alternative thought. But had an inverse effect- people rebelled. New talent bursting on the scene with their own individual sound and shitloads of talent. Artists and creative people threw off the shackles and music started to thrive. Perth & Brizzy went from musical non-entities to towns punching above their weight. it was great to see. I didn't get to WA in the 70s but Brizzy began to sparkle. If you were young in Qld, you had to dodge Joh Bjelke's gestapo in The Valley. Running your car off the road, roughing you up as they searched for drugs, feeling 17 year old girls up in pat downs... Get past that and a small handful of venues really rocked. And that repressive atmosphere brought out great new artists, in music, writing, the arts.... John Birmingham used to make me laugh.
