Located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and around two miles south, and slightly east, of central Nottingham, is the town of West Bridgford.
The history of West Bridgford stretches all the way back to 924 AD when the first bridge was built over the River Trent at the current site. This was known as the Hethbeth Bridge and its construction was ordered by King Edward the Elder. The intention was allegedly to have a connected stronghold south of the river, linking up with the 'burh' (i.e. fortified settlement) of Nottingham (or 'Snotingeham' as it was then known).
Records hint that the original 10th century timber bridge stood until as late as 1683 when it was largely destroyed, having also been damaged during Civil War skirmishes decades earlier. Rebuilding works that year culminated in the construction of a 20-arch bridge made entirely of stone.
In 1797 the Grantham Canal opened. This linked the Lincolnshire town of Grantham at one end to West Bridgford at the other, where it joined the River Trent. Its primary purpose was the transportation of coal to Grantham. As with many canals, its profitability faltered with the arrival of the railways, although it remained open until 1936.
In 1838 Trent Bridge Cricket Ground opened in West Bridgford. It has been home to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club ever since. It is also a popular venue for international cricket, having hosted Test matches since 1899. Notably, it is one of the grounds used during the Ashes test series between England and Australia.
In 1868 it was decided that a new bridge into Nottingham was needed, and thus the current Trent Bridge (i.e. the literal bridge, not the cricket ground) was completed in 1871. For a few months it stood adjacent to the old bridge, which was demolished later that year. The current bridge is made of iron and stone.
In 1865 Nottingham Forest Football Club was founded. Initially they played at the Forest Recreation Ground, from where the club gets its name. In 1898 they moved to the City Ground on the south bank of the River Trent in West Bridgford, where they have played their home games ever since. Nottingham Forest enjoyed their heyday under manager Brian Clough who served the club between 1975 and 1993. During this time they won the European Cup twice - in 1979 and 1980.
