Why are people giving her so much hate? Do people even know the emotion that is necessary to go into this song? It's not just about the singing. The acting that goes into this role she NAILS it. Yeah, I think she could bring the screaming down a bit. But she absolutely sold this role to me with this.
Absolutely incredible, and such an amazing interpretation of the song! I think people need to remember that this is an insanely hard song to sing, and the audio on recordings like that do not do performers justice! You go girl! :)
Ok firstly I'm talking about just in the Westend like Hudson you go girl you are killing it but this was honestly awful like I'm not asking you to shout girl sing for me omg i saw this live and hated it so much.
I remain unconvinced by all of the London actresses playing Effie White. Amber Reilly's voice is too thin but at least more tuneful than that of Marisha Wallace or Karen Mav. Marisha Wallace is a good belter but verges far too far towards a throaty shout in places. The emotionally energy is fine but she navigates the score with the same intensity but significantly less vocal ease than Jennifer Holliday and it shows. Karen Mav gives a sustainable and suitable performance which is safe and inoffensive but not soul stirring on any level, she's basically a solid understudy. What people tend to forget when hearing a show live in the theatre is the capacity of a good sound design to hide vocal indiscretions. Reverb and volume go a long way to compensate for slight flatness or the shouty belt which is otherwise unpleasant. Jennifer Holliday had the benefit of developing this material so that should be considered when comparing these performers to the original however I don't believe that these women are the best that could've been found for such a major production. It's worth looking up Lillias White who has played the role in several productions to much acclaim with an outstandingly versatile voice which has clarity, power and sustainability. I feel that even now Lillias White could sing rings around today's performers.
I was so hungover stood at West End Live, but Jesus - Marisha was SENSATIONAL. I've seen Amber and she's probably the best vocal I've ever seen live, but Christ, passion like Marisha has is rare. Totally amazing 💙
saw this in the theatre last monday and its AMAZING. i saw the understudy who sung 'and i am telling you' in this video and shes amazing. if you look up the original effie, shes exactly like this for those who think she over done it
This probably has to be the worst Dreamgirls performance I have seen... Pretty naff from Karen Mav (who is actually insane in the show, better than Marisha imo) and the disco one night only vocals were pretty naff (If i'm not mistaken that was the understudy?). Marisha Wallace does like to scream and i'm telling you no? Is it just me or was this performance too much screaming? Sorry but 5:59 wtf is that? Gah I do love Dreamgirls though but this performance doesn't do the show justiceeeee
I like the whole cast all the way. Including Marisha. Marisha was pretty good. She is a talented person and like Amber Riley, they both are great singers!!! Don't judge a book by its cover!!!!!
Bravo ...well done and amazingly performed.... As I said before with Amber was also amazing. When I had the opportunity to do Dream Girls our understudy Effie was an all- around major Singer Dancer ( Miss Sondra Bonita) She was the late Frank Hachet assistant as a dancer. So she had a snatched body So in the first Act she had the fat suit on and then second Act as she sings "I am Changing " and the reveal of the major costume change with the spot light, it was epic This girl singing and I am telling you, Bravo bravo bravo . The acting , drama OMG...She told that story. So those of you who have no idea of the story and saying over sung . You obviously don't know the story. It is the closing of the 1st Act and Miss Effie is giving all that she has because she was kicked out of the group and also pregnant and still trying to make it . So see the show first before you judge a performance taken out of context. This girl was aaaaaaaaamazing......yasssssssssssssss
""Telling you " WOOOOO that one is truly terrible, .... less is more, and her voice is just soulful enough and suitable for this song, she start screaming and overacting ...... i hope it is better in the theatre.
