Imagine growing up in a quaint English village with an ancient pub and church and little flower filled cottages. Spending days playing in meadows, chatting with good people by a fires hearth and surrounded by sounds of birdsong, leather on willow (cricket), reading under ancient oak trees!
Hmmm. But if you are just a farm labourer your children wont be able to lived there. Famously expensive part of the country. A bit sugary for my northern taste.
@@helenamcginty4920 ....but Helena, we have beautiful places up here in Yorkshire...."God's own country" & we are the largest county in England!.... :)
England is so pretty! I love England and its culture.. the pubs, sunday roast, comedy, football, folk music, Lord of the Rings. I like the accent as well
I love this country so much. I am Japanese, born and raised. First time I visited England was when I was 13. I am now 43, made my dream come true to live in England and been living here for 21 years now.
Well demand for wool went down cuz India had cotton. Then they went to India and destroyed and looted India and its precious jewels, spices and made slaves out of them. But ironically enough they brought English to India and now India is fast becoming a superpower.
Yes Celita, so rightly you have said. It is like getting back in old times. Nice & gracious buildings, roads & surrounding areas & infact everything - it brings the sweet smell of good old days we want back so desperately ! Beautiful & beautiful ! Hope to go there some day !
That is, I`ll have to admit, true - notwithstanding I`m English ( England having in recent years been ruined by unrelenting over-development ). I remember visiting St. Augustine`s Monastery, Ramsgate, Kent in January 1983. I was woken up in the very early hours of the morning and invited to what I understand was Lauds ( Morning Prayer ). Looking out of my window into the Monastery garden I observed that it was snowing heavily, and a thick blanket of snow weighed down on the evergreens. I heard the chanting of Monks without. The most surprising thing to me was that the journey from my room to the Church was by way of a tunnel under the road between the Monastery Cells and the church, as I followed these black hooded Monks into Lauds. It was all so Medieval like. Then the beauty of the church within.... But then there is mainland Europe, which is altogether far more fascinating a place than England, I reckon. In 1989 I was in the City of Valladolid, NE Spain, staying at what I think was called St. Catherine`s College. A Priest gave us a tour of the place, and led us into an old Library which some workmen had found. They also found some books ( as I suppose they would, it being a Library ). The Priest opened some of the books for us, which were all in printed form. But in many parts the printed words had been crossed out and in their place was the hand-written remarks and `corrections` of The Order of Preachers. Ie, the hand written `corrections` of The Spanish Inquisition. It shoved history - alive and kicking- right into my face. I wouldn`t want to live anywhere else but in Europe. This is where both the old world died and the new one was conceived.
I love England and her people. England is a well preserved, welcoming and beautiful country of rich history and culture! God bless England. Long live the United Kingdom!
those ancient circles wehre not made by britanics, those lands were colonized and invaded ...much later by nordic countries, actual brits ..check the ancient bones adn that you try to hidde.
Its not so dreamy when you've been in it forever. These towns that are beautiful upon a quick visit are in reality torture to live in - the loneliness and isolation is unbearable and we see so much fun stuff happening on the Internet but thats where it stays, only ever seen through a screen, nothing exciting or different happens in these villages. It's torture. Glad I'm moving to the US
Most of England doesn't look like that. The majority is very drab and dirty with small boxy houses, dog poo and litter everywhere, and lots of crime and antisocial behaviour.
I moved to England 2 and a half years ago. My English husband didn't appreciate its beauty as much until I moved over and we got married. We've been traveling around in England and Wales, and hopefully Scotland soon. I fell in love with UK and looking forward to explore more 😊
@Malay Ghosh No Im not ashamed of anything. It's not my shame if you or other people have don't something wrong. I love my country and I'm proud to be English. Just accept that so you can move on.
I'm from a city in asia and never ever in my life see something like this. This is literally a fairy tale village where aurora and snow white lives. Gorgeous.. Please keep these countryside this way. when I grow up, ima always want to move to europe countryside. Someday❤️
Just heard the recent news about Mr. Steve's cancer diagnosis. Wishing him great medical care and lots of strength and rest, and hopefully a speedy recovery. I have enjoyed his travel shows for the past 20 years!
It’s such a relief to find a foreigner saying nice things about England, usually all we get is hatred which we take on the chin but it does hurt a bit. We all have pasts of good and bad. This man has such a lovely, kind, positive voice, he’s a joy to listen to. Thank you so much for looking at our more positive sides 🤗
Nexus Oh I love British people and I love England. I spent vacation there for 6 months and as much as possible I don't wanna leave anymore, but to stay there forever. I love people, places, culture, and food in England.
Nexus I’m a foreigner and I love England! I had a great time in London and I would love to visit the quieter parts of this great and beautiful country sometime soon 🇬🇧💖
Can't imagine why it gets hate. I'm from the US and visited London for a few days. The people were so lovely and friendly. Anytime my friend and I looked around with a puzzled expression or looked at a map someone offered to help us. We never even had to ask. Lovely land, lovely people. As friendly as fellow Texans (Texas comes from tejas meaning friendly) any day. And the charm factor is like a fairy tale.
I'm an Indian. Every piece of history that we learn is closely connected to England and being one of her colonies, it's we who should have been angry on the English for looting our resources. But the fact is we still love the British don't know why. I studied English literature for my UG and PG, sometimes I think I'm better versed in English history or the history of Britain than any other.. It's seriously a dream to visit the English countryside
U get that hatred because your ancestors were the worst colonizers of world, similar to Hitler of Germany. So you poor people have to bear that curse life long.
I love "old" traditional England so much. I lived in North UK for 3 months and never been happier. The people, nature and atmosphere were amazing. This reminds me so much calm! :) Thanks for this wonderful video.
I’m British and how you guys feel about where I live is humbling. When you see it every day you get used to it. I look at parts of the US in awe too like videos I’ve seen on Alaska.
It looks like a place in classic story books. So beautiful, so peaceful, and so quiet. It is like a place where there is no war or natural disaster in thousands of years.
Wish it would stay like that but unfortunately the reality is the UK is extremely high in crime and rares of antisocial behaviour which ruined many small villages too
@@7.62-b3j are you testing me? Try David Copperfield or Nicolas nickelby or more modern things like if only they could talk, or Enid blyton's children books, or Franches Hodgson's books. Just look up.
I am a Bruneian, but studied in England. I have always had a warm feeling for England, especially its countryside and rolling hills. Thank you for producing this clip, it was nice walking down memory lane.
October is cold in the UK. I know Australia has it’s summer in UKs winter and The UK has its summer in the Australian winter! Don’t expect the weather to be great when you come. Although, you’re welcome anytime. 🇬🇧🇦🇺
@@Kratos-005 In the many times I’ve travelled in Spring and Winter have been lucky enough with and accepting of the weather. This will be my 4th time in the UK and love every season. Thx, appreciate the concern. ☺️
@@AnneMB955 I've been twice in October, London was fine just layer jacket. Froze at Stonehenge though, lol . Have you been to Vindalanda? It's a great archaeological site still being worked on.
i'm a fan of these kind of buildings and houses that reflect the old times and while watching this video i truly felt i've gone back in time... the place, houses and the streets are all beautiful and reflects their history in it..
My brother lives in a Countryside here in England. It's nice in the summer. It's peacefull all year round but more colder in the winter than the city because there's plenty open space in "countrysides"...... In a hot country it's better all year round as long as it's safe. ✌
I love to watch these types of houses and countryside which reminds me of beautiful olden days , they preserve the authenticity of their country which is what I like.
So do I. I love the rock walls, the country gardens, the creeks. The Architecture is amazing. We just don't have such anymore in the States. Insteading of preserving the Beauty its replaced with new ugly lol.
Towns and cities have it far different though. Ugly housing estates and buildings everywhere. The nice England is in the countryside, villages and small towns. If you live in a city I know I'd rather live in an Canadian city than an English one.
Pyrs --- If you can afford to live in a Canadian city these days. Vancouver house prices are off the scale. Being British and having lived in Canadian cities, there are plenty of things to complain about, a lot more traffic than most British cities, a lot more sprawl, it's difficult to get out into the countryside to cycle or hike without a car. There are some rough parts to British cities, but most have beautiful old architecture and museums, it's easy to get around them and easy to get to other towns nearby. As with everything, there are pros and cons to living anywhere.
It's like a fairytale in real life! Thank you Rick Steves for bringing us along. Hopefully the pandemic will soon be a faded memory and we/I can see this lovely place with my own eyes.
Love Great Britain. Lived in Birmingham for a couple of years between 2007-2009. Visited a lot of beautiful places & created beautiful memories. Lake District is mesmerising. Such a lovely country. God bless. Love from India.
Greetings from Ethiopia! This is exactly where mankind shall live. Nature, tradition and culture preserved for generations. If one look this video very well, it is easy to understood there are a lot to show for the world and create decent income for the locals. Thank you for sharing this magnificent video sir!
I'm from Scandinavia, I visited England the first time when I was 11yrs old, in -76, with my mom. We stayed a few days in London and I loved that big city, especially I remember that the huge parks like Hydepark made big impression on me, and Trafalgar square! Then we travelled by bus far out to the countryside, I believe it was somewhat near to Wales, where we stayed at a farm with bed and breakfast for one week! From there we made day-trips to small beautiful villages. At nineteen I backpacked around England for a month! I still go back for holidays every now and then, there is so much to see and to enjoy.
@@joaoalbertodosanjosgomes1536 Nope.Europe is for Europeans. Africa for Africans so on and so forth. You have absolutely no right to deny the English and Europeans in general there homeland and people. You don't just get to replace them.
you’re from Algeria I bet you’re on benefit disability allowance or child benefits DSS or something similar 😃by the way what does تحيا الجزائر mean to you as an alien 👽 in a foreign country 🤫
These beautiful architectures must be extremely difficult and costly to maintain. But I'm so glad that they're preserved. So we can enjoy the beautiful countryside view now.
I feel blessed that I was born and brought up in such a beautiful country . Having travelled the world I was always drawn back , and never want to live anywhere else .❤
England is absolutely amazing. The people of England are some of the most interesting people in the world. From London to the English countryside. England is absolutely amazing.
@@idkatthispoint-s9s our identity and culture hasn't been destroyed yet, despite the best efforts of our dear, benevolent leaders we're being oppressed, repressed and persecuted in our own ancestral homeland and one day there will be a backlash. i don't know how much more it will take before the backlash finally occurs, but it is coming. English people are of a stoic and reserved character, so it's not in us to be brash and constantly force our culture and identity down everyone's throat - but English culture and identity is there and is very much alive in the hearts and minds of English people. when you subject a specific group of people to oppression and intentionally try to destroy their culture and identity, it's only a matter of time until they begin fighting back. it's not over yet. we will win in the end. our ancestors resisted the Normans for decades, despite all the torture and executions. we're still the same as we ever were. we haven't changed. if need be, we can resist just as our ancestors did. *"Now in the primitive state of the kingdom after the Conquest those who were left of the Anglo-Saxon subjects secretly laid ambushes for the suspected and hated race of the Normans, and, here and there, when opportunity offered, killed them secretly in the woods and in remote places: as vengeance for whom when the kings and their ministers had for some years, with exquisite kinds of tortures, raged against the Anglo-Saxons; and they, nevertheless, had not, in consequence of these measures, altogether desisted"* _- Excerpt from Book 1, Chapter 10 of 'Dialogus de Scaccario' by the Norman exchequer Richard FitzNeal. 1180AD._
I would definitely love to visit such a surreal place in my life. England is love at first sight..It's an incredible place to explore. love you England!!!
my husband is from England... he hasnt been back since 2000, but since I am American and have never met his family, we have planned a trip in March of this year... I cant wait!
I was blessed to spend 20 years living in the West of England. Although I now enjoy the stunning beauty of North Wales, I still miss the gentle, rolling country and the magnificent heights of Dartmoor. Glastonbury is full of people in fancy dress!
Ever since I watched keeping up appearances series I’ve been fascinated with the views and sceneries of England countryside. Im a nurse and I’m preparing my application for NHS, praying I can work and stay there soon.
I have always dreamed of travelling Europe especially on the country side of it. I just want to experience how it feels back in old times, like that, I don't know everything about the landscape, architecture, views etc. gives me magical feelings, it's like time stands still. England is such a beautiful country!! Love from the Philippines.
yooo same, I am from the province somewhere in Southern Luzon. The countryside of European countries are my ultimate travel destinations, especially Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway and England. Like you can really experience having peace of mind by travelling on their area.
What a beautiful place and its history. My wife and i have been watching your shows on PBS for a very long time. By watching your artful video we feel that we are actually there. Thank you Mr. Steves for your presentation for so many years. Your words "keep travelling" God bless you and your team.
As a British person, a Londoner, time and again, even my jaw drops at the beauty of the countryside and coast of my country. I have stayed in a very old cottage in the Cotswolds and it was beautiful. Any moment you half expected a Tudor Gent or a Regency dandy to appear around a corner. You might listen for the swish of a lady's cloak while a fire crackles in the parlour. If you dream of visiting then please do it, you will not be disapointed!!
Many of the villages he visited look perfect and idyllic, but they don't look like that for no reason. Rick mentioned that you can only build out of that one type of sandstone, but that isn't the only rule. What I'm trying to say is the local bylaws, and living in a listed building, would probably drive you nuts. To live there you have to be part of the tourist attraction. I imagine it's hard to be overly private. One does not simply live in Lacock. Plus house prices are astronomical. There are places in the area that are almost as pretty where normal people can live, but house prices are still astronomical. So if you can't afford a £500k+ mortgage your choices are council house/flat (long waiting list unless you have kids), spend half your income renting, or go live in Trowbridge.
It's no more introverted than living in central London. In fact,.in the countryside people are so nice strangers will even say hi to you when you cross paths with them. In London nobody has time for this nonsense. I am an introvert and I would rather live in a huge city than some boring countryside
The English have a beautiful country .They have written a lot of stories and poetry about it and spread it wherever they went. And so the people from far of lands who read about it , come to take a trip down nostalgia lane. It seems all so familiar , after all we have been brought upon it .
AnSonn xtv I do agree with you as I studied Classical English literature many years ago. And this video reminds of it. I might go back to the library to read it again.
Many years ago(the early 80's) I got to lay down on the sacrifice stone in the middle of the circle of Stonehenge while a guide took my photo. There was no museum. Just one small guide shack back then. I pitched my tent just across the road between the two burial mounds. I miss England so very much. This brings tears to my eyes. Some of the best times of my life were roaming through Europe with my bicycle and backpack. I did that for nearly 25 years from the early 70's through the late 80's. After being in a bad car wreck,I am now in a power chair,so I cant do that anymore.
@@sarahwhyld5596 I been totally blessed and protected. If he hadnt I'd have been dead so many times. lol.God led me to some pretty rough and amazing places and situations. Had he not grabbed me by the tail,I'd not have made it this far. XD
I wake up every morning thanking God that I was born an Englishman. It’s all there in Blake’s poetry, ‘England’s green and pleasant land’. The English countryside in the summer is an absolute dream. The good thing about England is that even if you’re a city dweller like myself, you’re never more than a 10 minute drive from the countryside. I wouldn’t swap who I am or where I’m from for anything.
You'd better hope after centuries of destroying lands and societies of other people across the world. Centuries of violence and depleting the resources of other nations has come to this. All that bloodshed so you pale people can drink your beer and sleep in your lodges without worry. Rubbish.
Thank you Rick Steves. I wish to visit England and Scotland some time in life...Even if I could not visit the remaining world I won't mind. Beautiful countries and most sensible beautiful people...! Cultural capital of the world.
I was blessed to travel and see the beautiful countrysides of England. Two hours by bus from London going to the twon of Shakespeare, passing the rolling terrains in Cotswold until we reached our final destination, The Stonehenge. Grateful for my kind sister who toured us to experience seeing beautiful places in the world.
Without a doubt the English heritage and the richest culture are completely relevant and prominent for the entire WORLD , for example English time , or tea time , in my country we used to English tea four o'clock , I'm learning this marvelous language and his history , I appreciate this great country greetings from Bolivia
Thank you Martin for your kind comments. I really love where i live. I live in Plymouth England which is south west England about a 2 hour 30 minute drive from these places I would love to visit Bolivia I think South America is beautiful also
Goes to show how young America truly is. We don't have structures let alone entire communities as old as England or Europe as a whole for that matter. It's truly breath taking.
Jay Fermin ; the same for us in Australia. But we are even younger than the USA, with very little to remind us of Old @World. I t could be a blessing for us, but weak, incompetent leaders have destroyed any hope of that. We are an additional state to the American state. Before the second part of WW, we were a little Britain, but jumped ship after the war to US, as we all grovelled for parts of the spoil.
@There is no Left or Right if you lived here and you could see what a rat hole this place is you would not be so proud of it. You would be more proud of Nigeria or the starvation you caused in India then you would be of the United States
When I am talking to my students I say something good about England. Its history, its people and amazing places. It's hard to be so far away with this love inside.
As a Norwegian I have always admired the UK. It invented almost everything and have liberated us from tyranny. I love British crime and comedy and fantasy and such amazing music. I hope to visit someday
I am African American, but, my Great Grandfather is completely Irish. I am a U S Army Retired (1982 - 2005) Iraq War Veteran. I've been to Germany on a vacation by myself. Had a wonderful time. Would love to travel to the UK. My DNA heritage includes: British, Irish, French & German. How ironic! This is my 1st time viewing Mr Rick's video and I am absolutely in awe! I subscribed and will continue to travel along these beautiful countries until I decide to travel in person again. Wonderfully done video. The elder gentleman at the beer mill sounds like my grandfather! 😌. Peace & Blessings Mr Rick 💯
Please come ASAP. I you love (and respect) England - England will love YOU ! If only 'certain' other people would realise that simple fact..................(rather than change everything to suit THEM).
God bless you Danielle, Iraq eh, - you may have fought alongside our lads over there, Americans are well respected over here, and you will be made welcome, after all you are our cousins from over the pond!!
I grew up in Shropshire (West Midlands of England). This video felt like such a refresh for me, as I’m halfway through many undergrad degree in the city. I shall remind myself in the Summer when I am home to appreciate the beauty of this country.

Beautiful Fairy tale England. I may never be able to visit this paradise on earth, but it's sure to be quintessential constituent of my reveries hence forth. Pleasant hosting by Rick Steve.
I am from India but all of your travelling videos are so calming in nature, European places, with old European music and culture people without their smart phones and making reels all over the places, pretty cool
Being an Ex Londoner, have visited Stonehenge a number of times, love it... last visit was in the 1970s, back then one was allowed to stand right up against the huge stones, I have a photograph of myself doing it.. So many *stones* can be located around British Isles. I am now a resident of New Zealand. Nothing like the real Stonehenge, as locally here in Wairarapa they have a Stonehenge, enough said! Nothing like the real Stonehenge! Wonderful... England has so much to share with the tourists, old buildings...lovely countryside and great Cities/ Villages... no place like home!
A programme like this makes me feel nostalgic for the 1950's and 60's, when life was less fraught with complications, pressures, and uncertainty. Maybe they had their own problems, but this sort of programme reminds me to look for the things that are much more special, even today?
Weirdly nostalgia can have rose-colored glasses. TV doesn’t help. People have always had problems, 50’s & 60’s absolutely tied for top of the list irl.
Am so in love with the beautiful English countryside, especially their fairytale cottages....my eyes just hungrily soaked in every detail of this charming video. Loved the way the host's commentary wasn't intrusive, just the right blend of knowing when to speak and how much to speak! Someday, I am going to visit this paradise with my family
