I loved those old goal posts at Upton Park.So distinctive and that shape as the crowd was so close to the pitch.QPR and Luton had them too for the same reason.Happy days.
3 contstants throughout the decade...Brooking, Bonds and Lampard. Also Pop Robson was a great finisher in 2 spells. Had no idea Ferguson was dropped for 3 1/2 years. Always wondered what happened to him. Thought he had retired in about 1974. Had also forgotten John Radford played for the Hammers. Whatever happened to Keith Robson, Billy Jennings and Alan Taylor ? All 3 were good players who just seemed to disappear from sight.
Wonderful history. It seems so strange now to hear Jimmy Hill (around 12.00) singling out the three "coloured" players for special attention. But he is right, it was a happy day, as those players did a lot to undermine the terrace racism that was far too commonplace back then.
NickJG I disagree I think it shows just how "touchy" this generation are. Of course it's now anachronistic but there is nothing wrong with the word "coloured" The problem seems to be firmly entrenched with ignorant people who are determined to try to make certain connotations out of innocent references. If anything the anomaly you highlighted shows how just how much we of our language has been hijacked and emasculated by Leftists in order to stop debate.
It's nothing of the sort. "Coloured" was ok back then but would be considered as incorrect as Negro would be. The word used these days would be Black - not because it's derogatory but because that is the word Black people generally prefer. Whatever, it was a significant day and great that it was acknowledged.
Yes thats weird because living in the North West we knew the players of West Ham Utd inside out and as a kid would often emulate them .They had huge potential West Ham and fanatical fans but was it poor management?
Can you name ALL the players who run on at the beginning? I don't know the keepers, and there were a couple who ran too fast for their faces to be clearly seen.
Top League as it were domestic players.... We played like that how about now. Let current team & manager watch these players our ethos 'The West Ham Way' even when losing great to watch I was 10 around these games & never missed
Ironic.iconic and pointy chinned Jimmy Hill stating that "3 coloured lads" were a record in a team at that level. Now it's the norm to have 3 white guys in the team at this level.
At 12:43 minutes: The trajectory of turgid progress today, renders six or more on the England team. Whereas back in the days of yore, one would not qualify for the sacred squad, no matter if their parents shagged in Westminster, was baptized at the Abbey, and their baby was better than the best -- the buttress of the tenets premise would be tightly reinforced.
